Well Stu.. This is official then.. Anything happens to me, the kit is yours! Hows that? It is in 'black and white' so to speak.. ;)

Will have to do a little more reading about this matter and see what the guys think..

Non the less.. will have a short heavy rod to manage the kite. Might not have to be as heavy as 80lb but something in that line..

I feel like a TOOL now for having parted with my Tiagra 50 and Tiagra 50lb standup rod. That was an insane kit! Would have been superb now..

I know the old man use to do fishing with a stand up rod for Sharks back in the day in the Transkie. Used the kite to drop that 5kg kob in as bait.

Every time we asked him when we can go he always said that we need to learn to catch fish first. Without fish of over 5kg we have no luck.

They also used bettle clucth cables as traces back in the day.

Def ,Credit where credit is due,

You guys may or may not know how I battled to get Kite-fishing as a Sub-forum.Not for any gain,other than ensuring that via Sealine ,,Kite fishing could either become a, "shrine'' of info regarding a forgotten discipline,or to revive it as an active discipline in the bigger RSA angling scenario.

I have an idea that the wheels of resurrection are slowly grinding towards revival,and with the caliber of members showing more and more interest,I am sure we are heading in the right direction.

Now more to the point, Def, your humorous,explicit,side-splittingly objective  ,feedback,is really a big bonus to this sub-forum.Keep it up and keep spreading the ''disease'' and pretty soon,kite-fishing will be back in full flight,(pun intended)::S

Now we must jsut pull out those old experts like my old man to give us some of thier old pointers and they did it back in the day

Arno.That is exactly what needs to be done,I have probably mentioned this before,but my parents hail from PE and that is basically where my(now 76yr old), father picked up this kite-fishing thing,lol,more than 50 years ago.The sentiments shared to you as in your post above was very common back in the day. Go big or go home was really not an understatement as you'll'see from the photo below.  In case you wondered what's dangling below the Camel's,,,,,,,,,,,,well lets just say, below the Camel,,its not a .303 doppie,its actually a swivel.

The old mans choice of reel back in the day was a Penn Senator ( Do not know the size ) loaded with dacron as fishing line.

They believed in going big. Always use to fish with a harness that was secured to the beetle and a knife in the pocket to cut the line if required and then off course a lot of water to cool the reel down with.

Will go and scratch at home and see if I can not find some of his old stuff and post it for us.

Will ask the old man some advice and come and tell you all what he has said.

I'm enjoying this sub forum more and more, even though i had no intention of doing kite fishing myself, you guys make for such interesting reading and just all round good advice that it makes me want to get into it, and i am sure it's going go head that way soon

For starters i never knew they did kite fishing back in the day, i thought it was a newly evolved sport over the last few years, it goes to show, you can really learn something new everyday on this forum

With the feedback and input you guys give in this sub forum, believe me, kite fishing will be big again in no time !

The art of kite fishing was done alot and still is done in the East London area and according to my old man, this was the only way to do Shark Fishing back in the day.

Reading this is great fun, I remember my uncle has a kite fishing handbook that was printed in the early 60s. I will try and get my hands on that, the fish they caught off Durban harbour was insane. whale blubber was the bait of choice if memory serves me right.

Right. I was one of those who used the old Penn Senators for kite fishing with a kidney harness. I still have all my equipment.

Two Penn Senators, 10/0 and a 12/0 filled with 80 Dacron, 10/0 to 16/0 hooks, Boat rods, s/s traces etc. I still have all my kit and planning on using it again some time. Only problem is we used to fish throughout the night on the beaches. You were able to drive on the beach but now it is also dangerous with all the attacks happening to the anglers.

Would love to go get that BIG shark again.

I have done this kite fishing since +-1985.

Those interested and close to me are welcome to contact me and I will show them my equipment and how it should be used.

Hi DEF I have been fishing kite for many years. Love the post! If you have tried all the reels and find that nothing hauls your kite without braking i might show you the reel i build for kitefishing. There is no reel in the world that can retrieve a kite in strong wind without that DEEP BURN, until i got this idea. Now i dont struggle anymore. its childsplay getting that kite back if its out theeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeee. I use the one rod system most of the time, because i fish alone put my kite out by myself rig up and have caught plenty. Will post pics if asked for. i have 2000m of line on the reel. I have fished the double rod system and loves it too. But only when friends are on the trip and that does not happen a lot. If you use a reel like mine you could have 10 buddies and taxi their lines out for a drop in less than an hour. The trick as would have found out by now is the retrieving of the kite. if you okes want to see what a Limo reel looks like just say the word. I have no problem sharing details. Heaviest fish on the rig was a 248kg some sort of Bronzie with a very pointy nose......... a 160kg bronzie was on the beech from pickup to landing in less than 15 min, from about 400m out. this things pulls. 1 to 1 ratio and has free spool and BRAKES!!!!!!! sono more burning fingers or no stopping that kite. I fish wth 1000m dacron topshot and mono backing of 1000m. if you have any questions please feel free to ask. cheers mate

Flip ,lekker om van jou ''kit'' te lees,veral die katrol.Strand-ry en oorslaap op die strand by St Lucia was n integrale deel van die ''kite-fishing'' ding,jammer dit word nie meer toegelaat nie.Die idee het al by my posgevat om aansoek te doen vir spesiale tydelike-vergunning tov strandry/strand-slaap,soos bv gegun word vir die Rots en Strand Nationals. Miskien vir so twee comps n jaar bv. by St Lucia.(ek dink nou sommer so terug aan die ou dae(1980's se Sha-Cuda,Requin en IGI-Insurance kompetisies)

Ek dink nogal deur die regte motivering en kanale is dit haalbaar.Die onlangse oplewing van die sport,en veral die suksesse wat Enigma behaal het,mag dalk net die nodige momentum bied aan so n voorstel.

Net so terloops, ek brand om daardie reel van jou te sien.
