Jigging rods

What is available in SA? Prices, Availability?

Also what are the specs of jig rods that you would like to see become available in SA?  I'm familiar with most Jap rods so I can understand comparisons.

I have a range of jig rods being made for our NZ market which have the look and performance of some of the best Japanese rods but at lower prices.  These are 250g, 350g & 450g rods that seem at this early stage to have the goods for jigging here in NZ and I expect elsewhere.

I have a Shimano Beastmaster 85-200g, that I still have to give a workout. On any fish, let alone a big one. It's only 2 weeks old. Will be fun considering it's mated to a Penn Torque 300 spooled with 50lb Power-Pro braid. Roll on summer........

Interestingly enough, Charles Stewart (ex Angling Africa) swears by them. We chatted on Thursday and he reminded me that he has caught many large toothy creatures on them without any failures..... and at R640 it was a good price.

I have also heard that the kiwis are building some premier quality (at a reasonable price) jigging hardware that rates up there with the Carpenters, Smith rods, and other exclusive (and extortionately expensive) Japanese gear. Must be something to do with their national attention to detail, as we saw during the tri-nations game this morning.....

It will be very cool to get our hands on some of their gear - Nepps and the guys in the Cape are going to start aiming at the YFT's. Once they get that right, it will be the best test platform in the world for any jigging gear aimed at YFT.

GL? Yup, maybe you can give some of the NZ gear a test at Baz later this month? Hell, if there are any spare "test rods" maybe I can pre-empt something in my calendar and go and fish with Carch at RB......some interesting lunkers off the Zululand reefs.

Diversity of quality gear in SA will benefit all of us - Hear hear to new tackle!!!!

Yeah they are available in SA, have seen them at most of the tackle shops that have a bit of a variety!

Do they have the same rod over there in NZ, and what might the price be? I have been to NZ a few times and looked at tackle and it did not seem to be any cheaper than here. I did however buy some nice Jigs there when i was last there!

Those USA market rods are not available in NZ. Also we tend to consider them somewhat under powered for our bigger Yellowtail. US fishing reports on the Trevela is usually quite scathing given that the rod is under powered even for the US, over the top rating for 200lb braid and generally over advertised.

Would R2300 - R2600 be too expensive for a high performance jig rod?

Well, I am starting to buy jigging equipment and I was amazed that you can pick up imported jigs for less than a tin snake spinner.
56 bucks for a Tin snake, good Lord, it's getting cheaper to buy yellowtail.
I bought a nice looking orange "glow in the dark" jig for 43 bucks made by Williamsons. Now I kow nothing about this so I probably bought a piece of .... you know what. But it is orange and gold andhas the carrot colours, so I am sure it will work.

Bought it though to make a mould from.

Ahhh HT, the bane of us all. New Discipline, New Tackle.

So far, a Penn Torque 300 spooled with 50lb Power Pro braid + Shimano Beastmaster Med-Heavy jigging rod together with 6 jigs in 100-200gr + a bunch of assist hooks, and naturally a Pulsator jig bag. Oh yes, a bunch of Split rings, and Split ring pliers..........and I haven't even had the chance to fish with it yet.

Also loaded up on a bunch of jig heads in 2oz and some 7" Berkley Softbaits (Jerkshad 7" at 85 bucks for a packet of 4)and these are for the kob in shallow water when they start feeding in False Bay come summer. Yes I know, these are softs and do not constitute Deep Jigging, but hell - I will try anything to maximise my "fish-luck" when I get to the coast.

And I won't have the chance to use it until October at earliest. Have nice stuff to use, but no time to use it......at least when I get the chance - the gear will be in place.

Hey Chris,
Good to see you on hear again mate, your expertise on Jigging has gone a long way in helping me out and its great to have someone like yourself on hear to freely share your knowledge with us....

On the matter of jigging sticks.... As has already been pointed out, we are limited to a few Jigging rigs available in South Africa.... Shimano Trevala series are available pretty much country wide for a fairly decent price, and are certainly suitable for the smaller target species, but as Chris mentioned, these sticks or woefully over line rated.... their 200lb class rods are nowhere near that....lovely little rods though in the lighter weights and for smaller target species.

Shimano Jigwrex models are avialable at a few stores too, which I believe are the same as the T-Curve series you guys get in NZ Chris... our good man Torsa's weapon of choice.... :)
Lovely rods, butt jointed and feel like they really have the backbone to chase serious fish, or at least do a great job in keeping them out of the bricks...

As jigging is still in its infancy here in SA, we have limited availabilty on alot of the tackle that is dedicted to Jigging>>> as the sport gains popularity hear, hopefully more gear will become available at a better price.....

Chris I believe the Jigwrex/T-Curve series fits into that bracket of R 2000 to R 2500, but I'll have to double check that....

There is certainly nothing like the JM series here.... I can put you in touch with the agent who brings in JM and Zest jigs into this country though.... Would love a JM 150 Powerspell to match to my Stella 6k for our smaller Yellowtail......

I'm over in the UK, will be back next week and will drop you a mail.

HT - Mate, we need to get some moulds built off a bunch of my jigs.....

RB - Those heavy Jig heads and plastics will do the business on some reef species and alot else too, not only Kob.... i've been having the same thoughts for a while...

Nepps

PS -Chris - Heavey Metal at Ranfurly is NUTS!!! You guys are spoilt with BIG KINGS!!!! Awesome!!!!

i use the poseidon plugging stick for vertical jigging and i must say it is an awsum rod. It is honestly unbreakable, iv hooked into some beasts and the rod has been great, cant say the same about my reel tho! It has great value for money(only cost R800) and you can do almost any type of fishing with it.

Thanks Actionman.

Roy, what are the preferred weights and hook sizes of jig heads you guys use?
There is a new softbait about to be introduced to NZ and SA by the name of SLAM. These will be the equivalent of the Gulp Alive baits.

Hi Chris, with 7" softs, I generally go with 2oz heads......gets them down pretty quick.

Mmm, SLAM sounds interesting - providing they are priced comepetitively aginst Berkley stuff. (we get slaughtered by Forex and import costs etc.)

When are they being launched?

Cheers

Roy the slams should be in SA later this year I think. Prices will be same as Gulp. I am the NZ distributor for Slam.
We have some neat jig heads available. I'll post up some images in another thread later.

Back to jig rods, it seems that most of the available rods in SA are quite inexpensive. The trevela and boca are USA designs which are not optimised for the Japanese jig style. I'm unsure of the other Shimano or local products but we will have our own rod brand out in November which has been well designed and features the best Japanese components. Once I get my samples back, I'll be sending them to Andre to evaluate in SA conditions.

Thanks for all you help guys!

Excellent stuff Chris. Andre and Mark Stotesbury are the right guys to field test your gear. The VJ market will definitely grow in SA - so the potential is here. All we need is for the guys to "break the YFT" code, and it will take off like wildfire.

I am very interested in your jigheads, let us know ehn you post the pics.

Cheers - Roy

have a shimano jigwrex with stella 20 000 and its solid! use trevally with torsa 16 multiplier

personally i am begining to think that jigging with multiplier reel setup is a whole lot easier on body than grinders/stellas due to the way you can move multiplier rod up & down and use wrist movement to retrieve line.

Reeling grinder with a wrist/forearm movement stright up is impossible given arc of stella 10/20 000 handle . . . anyone else have any thoughts on it or am i just uncoordinated and doing it wrong???

Hey GL - are you well mate?

That's been my theory all along - you're correct. I see the Americans almost exclusively use overheads rather than grinders for that exact reason, and that you jig from the gimbal on the belt rather than under arm. Less energy used maybe?

In the rod dept., has anyone tried the new Shimano Ocea Blue Rose yet? On 360tuna.com some of the lads are raving about it.
