I was not "baiting" Van, I really was looking for his expertise.

Thanks Neil, very useful.
You say we should use a small hook and I have always used smaller than 1/0 but your articles often say 1/0 and 2/0 which I have now bought as well (Van smiles). I will try them all this time depending on what size fish there are and see which work better.

I also plan on getting some of the Nitro hooks (Van smiles again) in 8's and 1's 1/8 and 1/4 oz. Thge sea is quite rough around Stiebel rocks, Umzumbe where I will be staying and even the 1/4oz seems to be washed around a lot.

I will however focus on light as makes casting possible as you suggest hence the search for an ML rod.
If you really want to see Van smile then get the 2oz Nitros - R38 each !!!

I know you weren't baiting VAN. You were asking for advice from a person, and to be honest the answer you got can't even be classified as halfhearted.

I have never claimed to be the know all of light tackle artificial angling, but I do know a few things, let's just say I have been around that block more than once.

Clearly I know better how to put "pen to paper".

I believe VAN knows quite a bit (but nobodys allknowing, lots believe they are), but he must really work on how he answers a question.

On hook sizes and weights, 1/16 is good, sometimes go 1/8, hooks, small but it must stick out of your camo worm.

Ask questions but also be prepared to experiment, when I don't know I ask but I also experiment.

When you catch something, have a good look at it before letting it go ! (like how big it's mouth is)

Fishing is an art, now go paint your masterpiece !

Who says you will only catch something with dropshot only when retrieving?

My phone rang the other day, barely after the rig hit the water - so I put the stick down and finish the call. Only to find a fair sized crab on the hook.

Same thing happens about 30 later, only this time it is a little 'klipvis' - which served as a livey, obviously.

So, I put another stick with a piece of 'bloodworm' in the water and leave it stationery, got a blacktail - plus the remains of the plastic showed some other marks.

Is this normal, or extraordinary?

I am obviously new to this, have read more than practised, so there will always be gaps...

That's what I do with camo worm most of the time aswell, and have caught MANY MANY MANY blacktail that way ...

That's why I always tell everyone to experiment ! Worst case your experiment doesn't work, but if it does ...

Howzit Neil,

I agree with you 100%, the cammo worm is the most deadly plastic out there. i always resort back to it when i am not catching any fish, as you say any fish will do when you go fishing.

HAHA breaking into 3 parts?????? have you not seen their new trick, berkley now sell's the cammo worm all ready cut into 1 tiny piece so one actually only gets half of what you got before when they where still one long worm!!!!!!!!!!

When i saw this last week before we went to richards bay i just thought, yeh they are just ripping us off now. but i had to buy the packet at the same price as i know they are deadly.

Van mustn't come act here and speak the biggest load of crap, he forgets we can always import ourselves and thats what he's actually scared of as this will dent his business.

Tx for all your informative posts Neil.

If I ever buy any Berkley product locally again, it will be with a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth, thanks to Van.

And I shall have no scruples at all buying 'grey' Berkley - even from Hi-Fi Corp :)

And with this oke's attitude, I cannot see anything getting better - neither pricing nor service.

Case in point - would one not expect better information re the products, their availability, composition and the like in SA, from a reputable and responsible distributor, that is obviously coining it?

I vote for a comparative study/analysis between a few of the top products, a few independent analysts, etc. Could be in the form of a challenge, a team sponsored by their supplier/brand. OR better still, revolving/alternating angling staff - to accommodate different skill levels, etc.

Good opportunity as well to do some 'educational' marketing...

My daughter turned 7 months old on Monday, "WE" watch Barney (that purple motherflipper) 3000 times a day, he keeps on telling me sharing is caring. If I get hold of him I'll break him up like a cammo worm and take him fishing !!

I heard about the smaller ones, but have never seen them (remember PE is a country on it's own), I have always used the longer ones and they have worked for me. Whether or not you got more or less (comparing the long to the short ones) I wouldn't know, but the long one works for me and I buy them by the tub.

As for importing, you can go that route, just find out if there are any import duties on the stuff you buy and ofcourse buy enough to "cancel" out the shipping costs. Buying one or two packets will prove to probably work out more expensive because of shipping costs.

Check this one
I buy R 20 000 worth of airrifle spares, couriers from CT to PE R 300, I then sell all that stuff to ten different people, courier charges to them, just over R 1000.

Ordering in small amounts kills you on shipping costs !

I don't want to be on VANs case the whole time, I'm hoping that he can CONTRIBUTE to this site, but more than one liners, he works with the stuff everyday, he sees the new products before we even know they exist. If we have a problem with something he could prove to be a very valuable asset !

He COULD be a great "asset" to Sealine, and I hope he reads this. Remember knowing ALOT and helping no-one only helps you and only you, knowing ALOT and helping ALOT of people helps EVERYONE.

And ofcourse, the better success people get with "dropshot" the better the sales of the consumables (plastics and jigheads) will be.

Cobus,
I wish I had the time and also the money to get my hands on all the different "sea" soft plastics available in SA, I mean every imaginable shape, size and colour to really give them all a go.

But in the end I think if you have 4 or 5 of the popular ones you are set.

Personally my choice would be something like this
CAMO worm
4-5inch Nuclear Chicken
4-5inch Clear Fish
4-5inch Greenish / Purpleish Fish
4-5inch Dark Colour Fish

and then a few of the paddle tail ones, but you can buy them ready rigged at about R 30 for 4.

Check your magazines for info, we regularly at our own expense distribute DVD's and print info, ask your retailer.

VAN I will stand up for you and say it's true, I have 2 of the Berkley promotional DVD's, but although you (as the importer) have good intentions with these DVDs I can promise you that these are only given to "very select" clients and alot of friends.

Most people NEVER see them.

Go to Mustek or Rectron, buy yourself a DVD Duplicator (has 2 standalone drives), will probably cost in the range of R 2000 (maybe less), buy yourself DVD's by the hundreds and duplicate them yourselves, will work out alot cheaper. Get 2 or 3 different "dropshot" DVD's. If you buy "new DVDs" from the suppliers they work out ALOT cheaper than getting them from the retail shops. go to www.rectron.co.za and phone them.

Then run a special, for every R300 you spend on Berkley dropshot products you get a DVD for R 20 (which will cover your costs). Bet you sales will pick up just because a DVD is worth between R 100-150, so everyone will see it as a bargain.

Remember if the people understand how to use it better they will use it more, and will then also buy more.

But make it worth their while ! Look at the cost  !

If you would like a copy of the latest DVD, please PM me your postal address and I will gladly send you one. I will even cover the postage, that means you wont have to even pay anything for it.

I have a bunch of old bass worms that I have had soaking in the Berkeley special juice. I'll take them with and have a go with them as well.

The only motto in this country is make your buck and duck!
That's why we have been doing these products for more than a decade, cause we want to make a quick buck and duck. maybe we must just stop it all.
Then the fortunate few who are able to parallel import can get for them selves and the rest of the country can go without.

:blah

Van, I have been staying out of this, even though I have been hot under the collar a few times due to your reponses.

Now I would like to say the following : I, as a businessman can not  fathom, how you can be the sole rights owner of Berkley in SA.

With the way you answer questions and criticism, there is now way that you would be able to stay in business, well at least not in my industry ( maybe I should start distributing tackle and acc - then I also won't need to care about my clients !)

The way you have handled yourselve on a public forum, as a representative of Berkley is shocking to say the least.

It might be an idea to try and excercise some good PR for your product ?

Just something to ponder, although Berkley might be a good product, angling will not cease if Berkley does, so you need us much more than we need you .......
