I was at Struisbaai harbour this December catching bait and saw a guy landing a Bellman of approx 3-4kg on his Pick n Pay rod and reel. I walked over and asked him if he knew what kind of fish this was and he replied that he did not know. I informed him of the name and asked what bait he was using since they preffer prawn or worm and not sards. To my amazement he showed me his rigg. He had a 3 way swivel with a 4oz pyramid and a 6/o. As bait he used a Berkley cammo worm that he fed on the hook. I watched him as he re-casted and fished it as you would with bait, standing finger on line waiting for a bite.  My jaw dropped. Never saw anything like this before. Maybe I'm doing something wrong

galjoen on redbait.....:?:?:?:?

but the hook size. I was fishing for musselcracker and caught the galjoen with a perfect hook-up in the corner of the mouth.

Also caught and landed a sea turtle at Splash rock. One hell of a fight with 20 lb line.

That Cammo worm story got me laughing...........

One day many years ago, we were catching Yellowtail on the SW reefs at Dassen Island, and my dad had invited the neighbour with. We used to go look for the tail there in the Winter months, but used to take white mussel with in case the Tail were not there, and we could fall back onto the Hotties. That day we were busy with shoal of fish, and I was pulling away on the bait, as fast as you could pull. We were all catching, using Sardine and chokka. I looked up at the neighbour putting bait on his hook, and he was carefully putting the 10/0 through the flesh of teh white mussle............I asked him what he was doing ????? He answered me that it was working for him, he had caught 4 already !!!!!!!WTF ???? But then again, I have seen Tail eat cigarette butts been thrown into the water, and also saw a coke tin come floating past the boat that was discarded by another commercial vessel near us on the Blougaansie, and teh tail were hitting this thing repeatedly that it was jumping out of the water, and most of the paint had been eaten off leaving just the shiny metal colour. There is nothing better than being in the middle of a shoal of Tail when they want to eat !!!!!!!

Can you imagine my surprise when I landed a Galjoen one day, only to find my hook through the eye of the swivel on someone elses lost rig, with live Galjoen still attached :)

Catching Geelbek in the Strand a few years back, and we were catching Maasbankers on light lines with 1/0 hooks, and using them for bait. My mate Glen goes tight next to me with a BIG Geelbek, he battles with this fish for a bit, and eventually the GB snaps him up. Next minute his light line runs away, and he picks it up and starts battling with somethinge big. It is very light line, so we take it easy. Eventually, he gets it to the top, and can you believe, its the same Geelbek that he lost minutes before, but the 1/0 hook, has caught the 13/0 mustad in the eye, and we gaff the fish into the bost. 13 kg, the biggest Geelbek I have ever seen !!

Landed a manta ray on spoon, hooked in the mouth off the South Pier, Durban.

Twice caught 2 queenfish on the same spoon at the same time, same place.

3kg bronze bream on trawl sard with 7/0 kendal, same place.

2 dagga salmon on rubber squid at the same time, one single hook, same place.

Landed a Dorado which took a 3kg yellowfin tuna I was reeling in.

Caught a Mako shark on spoon.

Caught a tiger shark about 8 inches long.

And the best story ever, got to my spot with my mate to fish and realized, instead of taking a bait packet, had taken my Mom's yankee klippers. Caught a 9kg rockcod on yankee clipper.
