While the wind is blowing, let us know of your weirdest catch ????

I have a mate who caught a 6kg Leervis in Zandvlei (about 15 years ago), on a 2/0 V D Merwe hook, using Mielies for bait. He kept the fish and ate it, but I remember him bringing it into my fish shop that day to weigh it, and I cleaned it for him. The stomach was quite full of baby Kurper, and I can only imagine that the Kurper were feeding on his Mielie bait, when the Leervis came through the channels between the weed feeding on the Kurper. A very lucky catch !

Caught a hottentot on a whole baby squid and a 5/0 demon circle hook over the weekend. That was pretty lucky for me!

The best i heard of was a friend of mine who caught a marlin while catching slinger.
He was a commercial at the time, fishing off Durban a few years back, with 8 hooks on catching slingers the marlin took 1 of the slingers already hooked. The marlin manage to get hooked in the month as well as being foul hooked by a couple of empty hooks.
The fish was landed, the photo i saw looked liked a Christmas tree, this marlin warped in leader line with a few slingers still on the hooks.

I will try and get a photo from him and post it.

Had a boys weekend planned up at Witsand.A mate who was a rep had organised that he route himself via Swellendam and arrived there before us.He was no fisherman by a long shot and decided to give it a go in the river with a Pick n Pay rod he had bought earlier in the day.He arrived at the river and realised he didn't have any bait, but had a cheese & onion loaf which was meant for the braai in the car.So he put on a piece as if fishing for Carp and proceeded to land himself a 4kg Kob !!

Needless to say when all the "real" fisherman arrived we were completely stoked that the river must be FULL of fish. Not even a barbel was caught for the rest of the weekend :fbash

Hi,

not too sure how strange this is, as far as I know it is not common to catch. Caught a full grown Green Turtle from the rocks using a whole occie on slide. Not my proudest moment, as a turtle is never something that you to be landing on a beach in front of 50 other people. None the less turtle was released and seemed to swim off strongly. I still feel very guilty about it. Can anyone here give more info on how often  this happens (turtle from shore) and is there any advice on how to avoid this in the future.

Its really not that uncommon actually, I've seen it twice in 3 years and heard many stories. They love squid and apparently octopus too:) a sealiner has even caught one on dropshot!

They are very tough and are usually hooked in the scissors or foul hooked so hook removal isnt a problem. As long as they dont drown shame:)
