Unless you are willing to sell it on at zero mark-up?

Guess that was a loaded question from my side Craig.

Depends on what tackle shop you visit...

Well sell quality S/Steel bearings for all reels, they range from R20 - R33. Our AR bearings are R80.

50% sourced though a supplier and the other half straight from KingFisher? And the K/Fisher bearings are the R33 ones.

You will find slightly cheaper at Bearing Man, but generally these are a lower grade of S/S and tarnish in the reel. The quality of bearing we sell are all between R40 - R80 at Bearing Man and the likes.

Guess it comes down to the tackle shop and their margins. We try to run a honest 30% NP and provide fair prices. This way we sell Qty rather than margin.

Never say never...

I never thought I'd see the day Trophy and Enigma disagree on something!

Bottom line, Bearing distributors will always beat the price of the tackle stores. They buy bearings from agents and manufacturers by the tens of thousands. Tackle stores, and even agents such as Kingfisher, do not have a fraction of the buying power. Granted a good relationship with a bearing supplier will easily get you a further 20% discount on the "walk in" price but the standard price should still be cheaper.

CvdP go read it again

We are in agreement.

I imported reel bearings for Kingfisher and they import Thousands at a time from a dedicated Hobby and specialty bearing manufacturer.

As Trophy says a Kingfisher S/S shielded bearing costs you R33 where from bearing suppliers it is R40-80 for same bearing

Reason is that these are non standard sizes and they don't stock volumes on them

Do yourself a favour

4x11x4 Shielded Stainless Steel bearing - Kingfisher supplied retails at between R28-35

Now get a quote on high spec S/S 4x11x4 from the supplier you reckon will be cheaper - my best was R48 and worst R68 and don't even get started on ceramics

Craig...

I did say slightly cheaper, but went on to say that they were of a lower STD?

Our bearings, and those ex Kingfisher, are indeed 316 while the cheaper types are grades of 302.

I have tackle shops that come from G/Town and J/Bay to buy the bearings from me at retail. They drive past Bearing Man and the likes where they could buy wholesale. We are not talking about one bearing here either?

Tell you what let me have this supplier details and I will add a few grand of sales a month his way...dependant of the quality?

Is that 316 S/S?

I don't think they would use 316 ss for bearings . 316 is a austenitic stainless steel . I believe they use martensitic stainless steels for that sort of application.

I'll take your word for it on that Luca! *my knowledge of S/S and it's end uses for bearings is not great.

Do you know what the grade is? Would make it easier to compare apples with apples.

and again it's Chicken, Chicken, CHICKEN...... Chiken, Chicken or is it Duck, Duck, DUCK......... Duck, Duck and Duck.

Give me the details. I asked what the spec of the bearing is "high spec" is not a spec. To compare apples with apples I need the bearing spec to get a fair quote.

the comment is friendly banter between Trophy and Myself..... Long standing on the Bearings and a bearing salesman we met with....

Bearing code is S694ZZ, constructed of 9Cr18(AISI440) Stainless steel. ABEC-5 Tolerances

Morning Guys,

Been down the Bearing Man (BMG) route as well.

My price for the bearing on ABEC 3 is R19/bearing. Still waiting on the ABEC 5 price. That is S/S (9cr18) which , as Hooked pointed out, is in fact not the austenitic grade as 316 is.

My supplier does not have it in ABEC 5, he did say that it is the bearing he currently supplies to various reel mechanics and tackle stores in Cape Town.

Does that mean our reel mechies are using the Abec3?

It may sound strange but google the ABEC scale and you will understand better. To quote wikipedia "the higher ABEC classes provide better precision, efficiency and greater speed capabilities but do not neccesarily make components spin faster."

FYI the tolerances are 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 with anything below 1 not not classed as a precision bearing.

Actual tolerance difference between 3 and 5 ...... ABEC 3 0.0050mm and 5 is 0.0035mm tolerance of eccintricity( roundness) of the bearing.

The above information I gained from Wikipedia.

from my limited bearing experience and most experience built on urban legend... the abex 5 has always been the holly grail for cost vs performance. this is in other applications as well eg skateboarding.

Will be cool to know how in the long run they perform??
