I want one too! It looks like a great reel! Just wish there was a slightly bigger model than the 40.

Pat, with bigger drag figures like That , a Bigger reel is not absolutely necessary . a reels line Capacity would in all probabliity bve Made On the Larger side to allow a fish a longer run , or runs .

Naturally , with stiffer anchors On , from a smaller chassis  , Reduced Line Capacity becomes a non-issue , and if it is fitted with a nice handvatsel - Eish - it's hard for Me to steer clear of One of them ..................:temp:

go On ........ you Know you want one ....  He He He He He .

Just to throw spanner in the works here..

Seen em at Commercial Marine here in PE this afternoon and was not all that impressed. Also, at R1750 across the board I stick with my Shimmy.. :?

I like that spanner.

But why is the price difference so big? The shop mentioned above is normally the most expensive in Cape Town ;)

Ok so between the Torium 30, Finnor 30 and Fathom 40... the Torium still comes tops?

fathom fth40 is lightyears ahead of the finnor or torium in my opinion

lets see why i state this
*it has line indicator rings- no more guessing how much is left
*live spindle free spool
*interchangeable versa drag (set drag to your conditions) with ht100 washers 25pound drag!
*centifugal braking system!

i would choose the fathom if i could, i own a torium and it does not come close at all.
just my opinion

Thats great but we are fishing not going to space so light years doesn't matter... (OK tongue in cheek it does seem better on paper).

Things that are NB and will only come with test of time.

Big question, how will the fathom perform when wading ? The live spindle, free spool seems great but what will it do with a bit of sand in the works.

How long are those drag washers going to last? Are they readily available and at what price?

I'm really considering getting one, but there are some other options in the same price range that have proven itself. And then the question remains how much better is the torque than the fathom?

Drag washers should not be a problem as they are using the standard Penn HT-100 drag washers. No need to replace with Carbontex or leather here.

I am planning on buying a Fathom soon so once I have it you are welcome to have a look and have a cast or two.

the line rings seem like the ultimate marketing gimmick. the drag should be excellent though and should last a long time

Those washers last very long, and are very good. I use my old penn 555, to load braid on all my reels. I've probabaly loaded well over 3km of braid on a very stiff drag, and the washers still seem much smoother and better than an almost new toriums. Im my honest opinion, penn is miles ahead of the competition. The only thing that remains to be seen is reliability.

You okes and your bling! Reels dont catch fish!!!!

Just cause you can see how much line is left does not help on little bit.

I have Penns Shimano"s and Diawa and to be honest not one has a higher catch rate.

Its the fisherman behind the rod and reel.

But this is a sweet looking reel

Just Got My Fathom 30 yesterday, it feels awesome, and free spools faster than my daiwa grandwave, saltist and my shimano torium. Paid R1300 for it from Fred Tucckers.   will test it soon and let you guys know.
