Rods for casting long range

I am the Awa-Shima agent for RSA and didn't get such an email.

This thread is also in the Freshwater section addressing Freshwater casting.

Personally I believe the Blue Marlin Super Slim range to be superior and more South African condition compatible than the Skycasters.

The Skycasters are built for light line fishing with 3-5oz weights and definitely not suitable for wading.

I built a number of Assassin Beachmasters and Technium mediums for the R&S long range anglers. Volcom did very well with his first version (Ending #2 in his province this season)but has agreed that his new Stella will be better used on the SS range from Blue Marlin........

He was guided and coached by Wally Watt at the last comp, Wally was at first Sceptical of the Low Rider configuration but once he saw the performance he had to agree the concept is awesome and Volcom's future rods will also be fitted as such.

No problem and you definitely didn't trouble me at all, hope this has given a bit more clarity to your question on the Skycaster IV and it's application and possible alternatives.

Craig what is your take on the top end UK rods like the Freespirit HiS 220's? I am looking for something for all out distance casting that will suit my build, but it should still be a proper fishing rod with a relatively forgiving tip.

I still use the 13ft Beastmasters as they are currently the best suited rod for my purpose. As you know I'm not too fond of the overly stiff rods like the Techniums, although I use them for spodding and really like them for that job.

Otherwise if there is something you can build for me that will also be great. I'm not really into fancy brand names, I like tackle that works.

Harrison Trebuchet and Freespirit HS200..... yes both great but Eiiiish over R7k per rod built proper.

Get someones G2 13' and surprise yourself. I guarrantee you'll love it, even if it is 13'

Thanks Craig I appreciate it. Have you got some of the G2's with you? I'm coming to JHB on the 17th of May and I have the Saturday open to test some rods if possible?

Sorry Pieter White just bough my last 2. He has 4 and will be the quickest to get hold of.

Willie Maluleka of GN Masters has my 2 and not sure where he is fishing this weekend (he fishes whenever he is off Duty)

Hi Guys,

Currently I have 2x Okuma Longbows with 0.20mm Awa-Shima mainline and 0.35mm Sensation Leader Line. {hope its fine as my first time using leader line :) }.

I want to purchase 2x rods today and cant 100% decide which to purchase.

Okuma Tournament Pro 12'
Okuma Tournament Pro 13'
Okuma Tournament Pro 14'

I'm going for these as I heard they are quite good and I have quite a tight budget to spend on rods.

Any comments/Advice would be appreciated :).

Need a quite affordable rod which is strong enough and that have some range casting benefits.

The 14' will give you similar distances to many of the 12' rods discussed in this thread but they are going to be very heavy in a long day's fishing so maybe the 13' as a compromise.

What dobthese rods go for.nowadays?

Thanks, think I then went for the right one.

I bought 1x 13' today for R460. and should maybe get the next one @ the end of the month hopefully.

Cant wait to test it with my longbows I just got last month.

After that I think I might invest in 2 more spools for my reels as well :)

I would like to share my story...I started out with 13Ft Black Stallion & remember casting easy 125m witn them,then the little gogga on my shoulder said upgrade to Mk1 Raging bulls,and after a year I still could not reach the 100m mark,yes-I tried thinner line and so on...So I spoke to Oom Japie (Jl customs in elsburg) got some advice & traded them in for a set of Dc180's inc a pair of 6000 Shimano xt rb reels...well,wow- after casting the first view I got my 118m mark...I am using Jackel 0.23mm but are thinking to move to 0.21mm line...I am very happy now & hope to improve my casting

Enigma- pls exlain by your previous posts that anglers using dc rods loose their fish? Dumb question- please explain hook up to me? What is your opinion with My set up .... sensation Dc180's with the 30ton tip, shimano 6000 Xt Rb reels , jackel 0.23mm main(would like to move to 0.21mm for maybe extra 5m) & 0.40 xx leader...I find the Jackel line at this moment to best suit my pocket.

I never said they lose fish because of the DC or because of the Raging Bull or any other rod for that matter.

What many did say is that they lose fish because of a stiff rod.

With a Stiff rod you cannot just reel the fish in, it is stiff to cast well and doesn't absorb the shock of fish'e head shakes and the angler must compensate and help absorb that shock.

Hook up is the ability to set the hook into the fish's jaw and this is not just done simply by striking, especially when fishing at a long range.

Snags are getting stuck

Nothing wrong with fishing 0.23mm but I will not be using that thick line when pushing for max distance.

Use 0.23mm the use M1.5mm as minimum weight to make sure the current and wind effect on your line does not drag your weight around.

The thickest line I use when trying to achieve maximum distance is 0.18mm and the thinnest is 0.14mm but I prefer 0.16mm as standard

Difficult question that but based purely on components and material I would suspect it to be the Tournament pro.

The Alivio is not built as a Bank Angling but rather a Specimen rod and is of a lower modulus with slower action than the Tournament pro.

Thank you enigma,

Wasn't sure myself, don`t want to go rushing into buying something I do not fully know. I bought one Okuma rod about a month ago and when I went back they no longer had any of the same ones in stock. I do not now want to buy 2 new rods but something quite similar than the current rod I have.

Hopefully one of the shops I contact tomorrow would be of assistance in ordering the same rod for me.

Mostly when going to tackle shops majority of the salesmen these days care more about the sale than actually assisting the customer with what they require, in this case I was told the Alivo was better than my rod and it just didn't feel right to me.
