Rods for casting long range

Hi Guys!

Hope all is well with each and everyone of you.

I am thinking of buying two higher end rods to increase my casting distances. As most of you know, I use the Sensation 12' Bazooka rods with which I can reach 145m regularly with a P3 weight, 0.18mm line and 17lbs leader. On average I can reach between 110m 120m with a bomb and bait.

What rods would you recommend to better my range? Let's say I have a budget of R1500 per rod.

There are just too many rods on the market and keeping track of them all is not always such an easy thing.

Thanks,

Naruto

Hou by P4 en P5 gewigte.

Ek kon nie my oe glo nie want ek dag hulle maak slegs see stokke.

Die oom het goeie afstande gekry, ek het nie 'n idee hoe ver dit was nie, maar dit was redelik ver. Hy het die stokke by sy seun persent gekry so hy kon my ook nie inlig oor die prys nie.

Miskien moet jy gaan kyk......

For range fishing. Ranges from 80m to 180m I prefer my Blue Marlin T53 13'

Being 1' longer and of similar diameter the casting action of the rod would be equated to a 3.5lbs tip whereas we tested the 12' to 4.25lbs.

The 13' G2 1-2oz can cast a 00 to 115m with ease and takes a bait on a P4.5 to 160m no problem.

It is soft enough too fish comfortable and because of it's softer action it is a more accurate rod to cast.

If you want to go with the 12' rods then I would recommend the 12' T53 base with a T24 tip. these are the rods that Louwtjie Louwies and Gilbert Foxtrot use when not on TV

We have designed a new Purglas Blank that Gordon Meare is already building with the new Carp range (he took 60 of the blanks) It has a soft tip of about 3lbs or less but the backbone of a 5lbs rod so smaller weights are flicked with the tip and big weights like a P7 are cast with the backbone of the rod.

Your problem of budget at R1500 for a high end is your problem. the 2 piece 13' is going to cost R1850 from Johan Louwies.

The Purglas on the new shape and design would probably go in the vicinity of R1400-1500 but I personally haven't field tested the rods

The Mach3 of Schalk van Breda also around R1750 has a softer tip 3.5lbs and a beast of a backbone anc casts from a 00 to 3oz with bol and Schalk gets to over 180m with his.

My Choice currently is my T53 13' and I don't loose fish on them. Marius and I picked up 507 fish on a Carp Sa's and landed 504 and those we lost were due to failing hooklines and poor hookups not because of the rods

Although I would recommend you hold back till I get a chance to test the new Purglas on Friday

I am in no hurry to buy rods. Just doing some homework first. But it would be nice to get some extra distance when it is needed.

Craig it seems we can't agree the last few days.
T53's are old technology in my eyes. Why don't the european and uk anglers fish with them? Have you actually compared the casting performance of the beastmaster with a T53? Did you hang a weight from both rods to compare the suppleness of the tips?

Please dont see this as a personal attack. We have spent countless hours testing these rods and comparing them in all aspects. As far as casting distance is concerned they are all in the same league but the softer nature of the european blanks make them more user friendly and easier to use.

What is the price of the Beastmasters? And what TC/Model are you refering to? I had a look at the site and there are quite a few of them.

Christo, if you look closely you'll see I am largely in agreement with you and therefor my recommending the 13' T53 vs the 12'

The 12' is way to stiff hard and not fishing friendly and in no way an accuracy casting tod

Different casting styles require different rods.

For my competition Carp fishing I fish the Prophet 3lbs and i only fish 13' as it is my personal choice. My rods are really soft.

For long range fishing i like to fish the 12' 4.0lbs Spod rod. Being a spod rod it has 80% of the rod as a 4.0lbs and the 20% in the tip as a 2.75lbs making it possible to fish lighter weights and then can cast through to a 150gr weight or even a rocket.

For my long range bank angling casting i fish with a T80 15' Skycaster made for Eu Surfcasting. It's a shit fishing rod but a dream casting rod and with it I can safely fish at extreme distances and I like to use the longer rod because i cast a long way a lot easier with a long rod.

I very seldom use them but when i do use them I make very valuable points with them ie Top 3 finish in the Province on 2 occasions in Provincial trials. Winning provincial league final.

Marius has 3.5lbs Africast Competition rods that he fishes with but will prefer to fish with his Purglas 4500 because he can cast a bol as big as a Handball on a M1.5 and build a big feeding area before he starts fishing. Here it's also a matter of choice. that's how he fishes, I'll fish M0 at the same distance he fishes a 1.5 and it works for him. He's had 4 medals at Bank angling Nationals for top position finishes in both Premier and Presidents div.

He casts as far with his light 3.5lbs rod but loves his heavy Carp 4500 which have a 2.75lbs tip but which can cast a 4oz weight a long way in the Vaaldam wind if he has to.

Much of it is a personal choice and as you have seen Christo i have made no comment on the Beastmasters because i haven't fished with them but Jumbo and Dewalts ne tribals that we have just modified and are busy modifying are just as quick in action as the 365/2+1 T53, measured test curve.

Guys like Dewalt and Jumbo like a stiff quick action rod for their casting style.

I suppose it's much like telling someone that there is no replacement for cubic inches and telling him he must drive a V8 457cube corvette and then the next guy telling him he can get the same acceleration and torque with a Porche 928S Turbo with less than half the cubes.

Same discussion every day in the saltwater section visa vi the T53 Shark Extreme vs Purglas vs Century vs Poseidon

Personal preferences and personal style will determine what you want and what you will be comfortable with

Buy what you are comfortable with, what fits your style and what does what you want it to do.

I agree that personal preference has a big influence. I prefer a rod with a soft tip and a lot of backbone. The new tribals in a 12ft are WAY too stiff for my liking. I prefer the tribal xtr by far. The 13's are great though.
