Awesome catches there spin. Can't wait to get back to SA to target some of those beauties. Interesting about the leeries targeting the juvenile cob. How big were the cobbies that the leeries ate around 15cm? Why would they target the cobbies rather than mullet maybe because cob are more sluggish and easier to catch?

Some nice catches there Spin.Was wondering what those dark patches were,seems to be alot of them.Wish the leerie would shoal like that.We would be in for alot of fun.

So my Diawa Regal 2500 finaly gave in now the other day when i was out.Alot of people didnt have much good to say about the reel but i got no complaints.Gave me 4 years good service.Ok i did nurse it alot and cosiddering the nature of the sport and how had the reels have to work i think it did well.
So now im in the market for a new reel so any sergestions? Also with a new reel comes new braid so been thnking to go lighter than 20pound.Maybe 10 pound or so.Thinking ill get better action from my lures with lighter braid (less water resistance)And braid is alot stronger than what its rated for anyways so what u guys think?

Hey guys went to swartkops on Sunday afternoon till late at night. At about 7-8pm side, I noticed something oily in the water and everytime I threw it was like almost glow In the dark. Still Managed some very nice fish tho. Unfortunately not on lures. Could the water be like this because of the boats?

That glow in the dark is caused by high levels of phosfor, I have had nights with very bright blue flashing as my lure is skipped across the surface of the water.(very pretty sight) You also get it in the waves along the coastline.

I got myself a shimano exage for around R600 about two years ago, it has a decent drag and can easily survive salt water splashes, I've spooled it up with 10lb and it's served me well. Good value for money.

There are also other decent models, the sedona, if you wanting to go cheaper the sienna should get the job done.

was fishing the swartkops in December with my swarrie and we landed quite a few nice cob all between 2-8 kg. been fun but with the bad water we released them all. now back in cape town and would like to try out some dropshot here.

Absolute pandemonium under the bridge this evening - I guess it must be a few big cob or leerie (or elf?) attacking the mullet from below.
Pity no takes on the lure.

Maybe some of the more experianced anglers can try answer my question.
Iv been on leave and been out numeras times with my boat.Iv noticed that most of the time the fish finder dosnt pick up any fish activity,not even small stuff in the river.The other day i went all the way past Redhouse just to see if i can find any decent activity but very little.The other night when i came threw brickfields the little mullet were full up.To the extent that ud think with that amount of food there should be alot of other fish feeding in the area.But no chases at all.If i compare to previouse years u could at least say when u stop at a spot that there are fish around but now u ancoured for a few hours and nothing gos threw under the boat.So is it just the season or are there just less fish in the river?To me theres ample food around.I mean since when can u put pilchard on and it dosnt get touched for hours.Where the stompies?They used to be a curse.

I personally think a there is still a lot of fish left in the river but with the conditions being as it is the last while is some of the fish not leaving the river into the ocean? :wfish

On the boat the other day we saw a stompie floating by us. also the same day we saw two guys fishing on the banks under the bridge and the one caught a +-15cm either tiger or steenbras, I saw him looking at his buddy and he gave him the nod and he through it next two his bag, also a few days earlier saw someone catching between 5-8 undersize fish and keeping it all, when we shouted of the boat he got real upset.

I think this is where the fish are going. with the locals and the trek netters up river there is soon going to be nothing left in the eastern capes most riches fishing river.(t(do(wn)

Howzit like -to- fish. Ja did not measure them but im sure around 15cm or so.
Think those leery are just pure predators. Dont think they know the differance between cob, grunter or,mullet. Possibly buy shape and spots but to the leervis food is food. I have caught them on such a wide range of lures that it can not really make a differance as to what they feed on. If the oppertunity arises to feed and full ones belly im sure it will take it.

Howzit rock lobster.
Ya i must say the leery have been around but this year conditions have not been the greatest and the planets have certainly not lined up as far as the river goes. Ive had some serious highs and lows this december on it.
As far as my advice on reels go theres a shimano for every price range.
At the moment for the lighter fishing in the river i use a 2500sustain. Old and new model and a 3000 symeter. The sustains work had, so hard that my 2500 sustain is often the reels my over seas charter clients use and some dont actually know how to fish so u can imagine the abuse it takes.
I use 15lbs double X. Casts well, ties good knots and lands fish. Try and get yellow braid. The strain youre eyes take when you can not see youre braid can really become anoying and can even effect youre hookup rate.
Even my older sustain reels that have spun long session upto 12 hours a day are still going strong. hes the rubber handels are falling off and its needed the odd bail arm bearing but ill take them to a battle anyday.

I agree with Spin there,Shimano are work horses!I have the

Shimano Sustain 5000fg,Shimano Saharra 4000 and the 2500

and think the Sahara is also a fantastic reel !

So i shopped around and settled on the new modle shimano exage 2500 fd. Also gonna try the new  12 pound kast king braid that Trophy just got in. paired with my quantum kinect wich i put new fujie eyes on was awsome. 1st cast landed on the bank. Dad almost fell of the boat laughing. Big differance compared to the reagal i had. New shimano fan right here. Now if the fish would just play along so i can break the new reel in and open my account for 2015.

Ok so I finally broke the new reel in this morning. 2 huge gurnards. Ok they weren't the target species but ill take it.Account also open for 2015 :clap12:clap12:clap12

I Just started drop shot. Not shore if I am doing it the right way. were can I get some tips. I don't no if I am going to fast or not the right technique. can someone give me some advice.

and were at swartkops can I go?
