Lure building.

.So lures are expensive and you're never sure what pattern to use. Make your own. It's addictive and you end up making more than fishing. This is not the rack at a tackle shop.

Guys, Those aren't mine. Some other Lure Head from Finland (OnLine chommie). Good thing he doesn't sniff his drug hey. Mine will all be Purple HeHeHe. If I had that many hanging on a wall I'd go into business. I'm a Vaalie for now and I have time after hours so I'm playing catch up.

Come now. The lights are off and you'll just have to grab. Nah, Royboy I'm about 3034 lures behind this okes collection. He's nuts but he comes from Rapala land so I understand.

Sheweeeeet! Wow, don't let Nepps see that picture, otherwise the race will be on!

Some fine things hanging up there.....and yup, the "Laplanders" are perfectionists...... a huge difference between hand-made and machine produced en-masse.

I wish my walls looked like that....almost like art!

I see that you are a Mtwalume dude. (My old man is still a member, and I spent most of my youth at the original Ski Boat Club) ......those were the days!

Hey Royboy, I lived there in 2005. Didn't know any of the guys at the ski boat club but upstairs at the pub I knew a few. I lived in Cabin road opposite George Igley. I still believe Mtwalume to be the best R&S spot on the South Coast. Maybe it's changed in recent times. Lure building is a nice pastime but it interferes with the day job, lol.

Cold winter nights and boredom are the motivation behind this new "Set". I know I keep posting pics of half finished lures but I prefer to get a bunch of 20 ready and primed. If you airbrush one to completion it's annoying to have to keep changing colour, cleaning the airbrush and watching paint dry. Cold weather doesn't help either so I'm carving and looking for new ideas all the time. This set is my loose version of a Halco Sorcerer. I've named it Merlin and the 3 are 170mm, 150mm and the smallest is 130mm. I've only seen one pic of the Halco and I know they aren't the same. Mine will all have oversize eyes and different lips. The overall shape is different too. They'll get the paint treatment in a short while and my gut tells me they will work when they hit the water. I don't make small baits anymore for three reasons. The eyes aren't what they used to be and I figure bigger baits = bigger fish. Lastly the hands have been damaged from lifelong abuse and the dexterity is somewhat diminished. I love this hobby like no other. Addicted.

There was this temporary jig left over from a welding job so I used it to paint primer on my lures. Normally they would flap around but a little wire and some old springs keep them right where I want them.

I'm making lures for my own box and was looking around the work shop for a few special tools. Things to use for the fine detail. Most of the stuff is heavy duty. I came across this set that my ex business partner bought me. I laughed at it the first time I saw it. There wasn't a thing in there I could use on a bike but for lures it's the berries.  It's like he knew he was going and I was going to start building lures again. Thanks China!!!

Lekker, I gather you use it off your electric drill.  Do you have a compressor?.

In the early days I used fillers with the resin. I guess Talcum would work but it's expensive. The resin suppliers would be able to guide you on that. Now I use a casting resin called F16. Designed for this type casting. No air entrapment, sets up quickly, no shrinkage, low heat fast curing. Perfect but costly on the face of it. Cheap in the long run. You will cast a bunch of lures with ease.

1)would it work if u used plaster of paris for the mould?

bullie, if the piece being molded doesn't have undercuts (negative curves) then you could use POP but it's not a long term solution. POP is brittle, porous and takes a while to dry properly. You have to use a good release agent etc but making your own is all R & D so give it a try.
