Metrorail are reinforcing the railway line so you can't go there... no entry onto a building site:

you are right in saying mr spinner man fishing for yellowtail and crayfishing together is not on,but please let me try and explain to you how i and a few friends do it.We come down with our rods/crayfish nets early ,we pick our spot for the day rig up our spinners then we put our fish heads on to our nets, then mr spinner man we take our nets and start heading to the cave on the right .im sure you dont spin there ,not many people go there. We catch our crayfish with some days in one pull.We head back to our spot to enjoy the rest of the day spinning. So mr spinner man what is wrong in greating on the rocks and being a bit friendly, after all,you old folks might have a stroke/heart attack and who will help you then.lets be nice to all that fish the ledges and stop bitting each other all the time, lekker fishing,,

I cant wait to get the suncream on and take my krappi rod and kreef net down to one of the most idillic spots on the coast. I feel blessed to have the legs to walk down there and the strength in my god giving body to do a trip down to the ledge. The attitude to see the gifts of god.

I am sorry I started this blog and it saddens me the folks that are out there in this stunning country "of ours"
Sorry to have started a fire that was not my intention.

But I will be down there this season and hope to get my tail.
his out there!

Catch and release!

Accept Rookranz for what it is. You are having a last glimpse at a dying art. Once those "Old Timers" are gone, I am not sure that they will be replaced.....

The style of fishing, and tackle used will just disappear. There was a time when just 2 spinners were catching 90% plus of all fish landed.

What has happened there has little to do with old or young, because many of the experienced younger anglers hate what has happened there as much as everyone else.

The "style" of fishing can be described as coordinated and disciplined to enable all to have a turn to catch a fish and was developed over many years. It has now become a free for all with everyone just casting when and where they please with the result that less fish are caught and the skill element has completely been removed from the game.

I am sure that sometime common sense will again prevail and some will realise how stupid they actually are. It's a bit like an army just shooting in any direction with the hope of hitting an enemy somewhere. If all the troops relax, find the enemy, take aim, fire carefully, they will be much more successful.

For 4 of the last 5 years I have visited my in-laws between Christmas & new year. They now stay near Hermanus. On each visit I try make it to Rooikrans twice. I have 6 Yellowtail to my name for my efforts and have learnt a huge amount by watching the experienced locals both young and old. I am quiet, mind my own business & I like some space so on my 1st visit I went to the bottom (beginners ledge) because that was where I felt comfortable. I can't remember ever being greeted. I have never had anyone share with me that this is the way we do things so please follow the guidelines. I have only ever been offered help by the "visitors" when I needed a fish to be gaffed. I have been told not to throw when I reach the edge 1st after a shoal has been sighted. I have been told to move to the lower ledge once I've hooked a fish while everyone was sitting down. I stayed high because I hooked the fish far out and wanted the angle on my line to keep it from diving. I have been complimented once or twice. I cast the whole time in case of stray fish as I only get 2 days a year there and I drive from Hermanus to get there. I have seen the locals curse others for throwing at an angle to reach a passing shoal straight after they have done just that. I LOVE Rooikrans, it's a unique place and I respect the locals even though I receive little or no respect from most of them. There are some younger guys that will keep the art alive but I suspect it's because they've watched rather than been taught by the locals. As I've already said I respect the locals and I don't expect any help but neither did I expect that mature adults could be so negative whilst persuing their passion.

hm i wonder if all us guys, young and old get together and maybe see that we are not all bad and actully like each other.Ever thought of starting a Rooikrans angling club, there we can get to know each other and learn from all this. When i started to fish in knysna i joined a club called knysna rock ands surf, the famous mike pautch stared the club ,and boy oh boy did we have fun. The club still is run by mike and some fantastic people, they are like a family ,chat ever week and learn from each other.May be there is some of you guys young and old that might want to give it a try.also the older guys that cant get down there any more can join and give us there knowledge and become great friends.LETS SEE WHAT YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT THAT CHEERS MIKE PRETOIOUS

I went down the Kranz for the first time when I was 11 years old, that was 1961. Caught many fish ,We had lean years when no one went down, I would spend an entire Saturday down there and see no one, then suddenly the fish came back and all the spinner men came back. I pay tribute to some of those chaps that I remember. My Dad Ronnie Pretorius, Pieter van der Merwe (senior), Pieter Van Der Merwe (Junior), Steve Champion, John Mann, yep I still have a John Mann Spinner. Louie Boshoff, Harry Peters, the Hart Family. The Night family (not sure if I spelt there surname correct). If anyone can remember any one else please let me know. I remember sitting in the hut that has since gone and sitting on the toilet on top ledges when a swell came up and blasted me off the toilet seat. Yep, those were the good old days. All the best to you all and welcome to all the new comers to the Kranz. I will not be going down anymore as I now Live in Melbourne Australia. I went down for the first time with my brother last month after 18 years on a visit back to Cape Town and the Kranz brought back many good memories.
I really miss those old timers and the yarn they could tell.
All the best
Keith Pretorius  (Down Under).

That place is major bit of S.A. fishing history and there are more stories then you can think of. In fact whatever you can think of has already happened there.

My father in law Stan Brown fished rooikranz as a kid with his father and brother, i know there are some photographs that i saw with yellowtail and tuna tied to one of those olden day cars. The old man is now in his eighties and still acts like a spring chicken, i will ask him to look for those photos and load it onto a disc, eish memories like that should never be lost, he once told me of a " and i stand corrected" redsteenbras he lost there, i cannot remember the weight, but the fish was caught a week or so later with his trace still in its mouth, it was mentioned back then in one of the Cape Town newspapers.
