Two weeks ago my Dad gave me a bag full of books and said: "Dit het tyd geword dat ek hierdie boeke oorgee aan jou. Ek ken hulle in elkgeval woord vir woord uit my kop uit."
Guys, this must be one of the best gifts I've ever received. I have grown up with these books and they have been my companions for many stormy days when we could not go fishing. Whenever I went to visit my parents I would read them and I have probably read them all about 10 times over. They might be worth a buck or two but their sentimental value to me is priceless.

Nice books - I have read them all, several times, borrowed mostly from libraries in Jhb in the 1970's as a young teenager. I treasure my copy of Strike!
Years later I was buying a trout-rod from the store that Mike Stott had something to do with in Cape Town (forget it's name - about 1980/81) and Mike helped me with a #6 Royale rod (I still have it). We took a few rods to the roof and had a few casts over (Adderley- ?) street.
I then sought him out on subsequent shopping visits and I asked him about the Rooikrantz days and the yellowtail and snoek he told me a few stories about cycling from somewhere near Rondebosch to Rooikrantz to have a fish, then cycling back with fish on bike. And sometimes more than one trip because the fishes were many. That is an amazing feat of endurance even if he did it once only. He also said that Strike! does give an impression somewhat rosier than reality was, even then. He said this with a wink.
But there is no arguing with the photos. And the older male relatives I used to listen to have many a photo with dozens of big fish (crackers, steenbras mostly from Eastern Cape) lying dead on the lawn from the 30's to the 60's. There were more around then, and a lot of them are vunerable to overfishing from the shore. If we want them back, we have to stop taking them. Read the posts about the De Hoop area somewhere on this site to get a flavour of what could be. I fished that area before it became a missile site and a reserve. We did not see anything like the catches made by the research teams in recent times.

Sorry to go off topic for just a second. I see a lot of guys expressing their concern about our fish today. The old days are not coming back, the fish isn't coming back either.
But we have an opportunity to set the situation streight. If we want to be legendaries like those old fisher folk getting the big ones, we can !
If we start to put up reefs along our coast, we can multiply our coastal fish counts many times over.
I see the guys nowadays getting a fish or two and think they do well. I think it sucks. We should all be buzy catching fish after fish after fish and big ones too, because there are that many.
All we have to do is start putting some reefs up and we can have so many fish back. Maybe not all, but I think most !
We can all sit around and just talk about how poor the fish is and feel sorry for ourselves, or we can cure the situation. Want to leave a legacy ? Lets put the reefs up ! It is within our reach to change the unevitable to fishing paradise.
