Anyone ever read A Fisherman's Tale by Joe Mara? Its one for the Natalians. The guy talks of 15kg grunter being caught at the coaling wharf in durban harbour. So well written with each story grabbing you in. Wish i could find my copy somewhere and give it one or two more reads. Lost count of the number of times i have read it as a nipper.

In the sixties I watched the 800lbs Bluefin coming out between the quarry and Kalk Bay and they use to come pass the Kranz looking like submarines...
By the way I have the 16mm footage of said Yellowfin coming out at rooikranz and if my memory serves me right it was Mike Stott who bagged the first Bluefin in False Bay

There was an article in one of the ESA magazines about the first Bluefin Tuna ever caught in Simon's Town.
It was in the November 2007 issue and the article was aptly named "The Times they are a-changing". It is worth reading. Not sure about the angler, but you are probably correct.

hey there, think it was the Guinjata species bonanza, I am not sure if Joe Mara is alive or not, however there is a boat that has won this comp a couple of times and its called "Rya-Mara" I think the presenter could have been reffering to that.

On Nov 27th, 1949 a shoal of yellowtail moved up and down past Rooikrants for 6 hours; greedily snapping at every spoon thrown at them. Then 28th of March 1953, was so hectic that the sharks moved in as well.
Blue Fin and Yellow Fin Tuna were caught og these ledges - what an era this must have been. Maybe one day - if we continue our perserverence with conservation - you never know........

is it posble to buy strike anywhere? n howmuch
I hate to be the harbinger of doom , but in twenty years time people will look back at 2009 as one of the hey days of fishing . As one of the times we were still aloud to fish or it was even worth fishing . Only way to get False Bay back to what it was is to stop all commercial fishing in it for a good few years . That includes the trek-netters , with a shoot to kill policy on all poachers as they did with the elephant poachers . I personally think it should be done all along the coast , no commercial fishing within three nautical miles of the coast . We will be catching Red Steenbrass of the rocks again in the not to distant future .
As for strike , CNA should have a recent copy they all the same just reprints with a bit more jazz the old ones can still be got at old book stores.

Interesting to note that a lot of the monumental catches were made on a specific date, like "the 27th November 1949". The really great days were remembered and diarised.
Seems that even back then some days were better than others.
But a picture tells a story that cant be spoken and photo's of a bygone era tell it like it was.
I think if anything our era should be remembered for the implementation of size limits and promotion of catch and release.

In my humble opinion, 'Strike' is the best bit of angling literature on salt water fishing in South Africa ever put together between two covers!
Another VERY good book is 'Sea-Angling Fishes of the Cape' by C. Leo Biden. Written in 1930. Did you know that a 500lb Tunny was netted in the shallows off Woodstock beach in 1922? It had 17 one-pound maasbankers in it's mouth!
You'll find many more interesting true accounts of this nature in this book. The downside is, it is an extremely rare book now, so happy hunting!
