Would it be pratical and probably a fantastic opportunity for someone be tagging all the fish as it get released by these guys.
I have also witnessed them putting steenies and undersize fish back, apologies(the fish actually gets slung or thrown wildly back into the sea). Maybe someone from R&S could teach one of the trekkers a thing about safely releasing a fish.

Most fisherman I speak to usually ask what can we in our personal capacity do. I think here is an opportunity for us R&S angles to put our money where our mouths are.

When the trekkers land a catch buy all the fish then and there at the rate that they would be selling them, then tag and release them.

Trekkers happy
- they get their money.
Fisherman happy - they get to release fish.
ORI happy - lots of fish being tagged.
Fish happy - they get to swim another day plus I think being trekked then tagged would cause less stress than being hooked and tagged.

my last say on this one, after kraken & angus brought some more perspective to this thread....

It's not the trekkers keeping 40cm size kob at Bontkop....

I found the thread Kraken was talking about... Miles gives advice here about fishing with handlines.  Please scroll down to the Geelbek part....

And then i respectfully request that we try and keep an open mind when seeing 25 kob in the back of a bakkie, and then call them rapists of the sea.... Like i said there are a lot worse things out there than treknetters....

Is there absolutely nothing that we can do?
Cant we vote out something like this? Cant we AT LEAST do something? Complain to stop this massacre or at least "slow it down" by 99999999 ton?

Hi dillon

Please explain why it is so sad and unfair. What is the precise problem.

have you ever fished strandfontein for hours on end and then these buggers pull up and just soema 'trek' all over you, basically forcing you off your spot? These okes think the ocean belongs to them 'cause they have a quota. If you have not experienced this first hand yet, then I advise you make a plan. Wanna see if the netters are still gonna be 'Spoken' for. YOU mention one guy that's not gonna be in the m#*@in when this sort of activity suddenly starts taking place all over and around him. End result: your session is ruined, ocean raped, fish all trekked and the rest gone, angry and unhappy angler, time to pack up & go home. And this is just one of the problems!

and the yellowtail.....

Sparky my post is not a stab at Miles or commercials in general. All i'm saying is people should know there are more things going on in the sea that affect them, than the stretch of beach from muizenberg to strand.....

martin my comment has nothing to do with miles or commercials, what i'm saying is its time these keyboard warriors catch a wake up theres alot more going on than what they realize or are aware of once again as mentioned before if this was a group of sealiners that had landed this catch there would have been praises all round

for a little glimpse of history http://www.pmg.org.za/docs/2007/070508achmad.htm might or might not be interesting but read it anyway

i think that they are aware of that!,would it be fair to say the trek netters are like Angus put it "in the public eye",and at the end of the day for everyone to see what takes place? ? ?

What happens out in the open ocean not many anglers are involved in the commercial sector of fisheries/have the resources etc. to witness the tons of fish being hauled.
So,besides my personal opinion i have regarding the netters, the netters are there for everyone to see.....so, they're going to complain.

Melkbos and surrounds is a Very Good example of the impact trek netters had....look at it now after a couple of years of absence from the netters.......

Yip i put up that post after Kraken mentioned it, if you read the thread, after miles says they caught 2000kg of bek and 200kg kob in a morning, he get's manna from all corners for his informative post and not a single question about how many fish it was.  It really seems that as long as it's an angler it's fine... if it's caught in a net, it's the devil at work....

Marthin, there is Irony in your comment above "Its the devil at work".......Sulaiman Achmad is and has always been affectionately known to the fisherman of Kalk Bay and Ocean View as "The Duiwel"
There will always be conflict bewteen the Trekkers and recreationals.

Hi Sharkbait

Thanks for the reply it helps a lot. Managing user conflict is important and wherever there is conflict people are unhappy and their day on the beach is spoiled.

The feelinng of resentment  has nothing to do with the pictures of the kob though. User conflict is not confined to trekkers.  It happens in a lot of branches of fishing.

The response to the conflict is different with different people. Some use it as a chance to get some livebait for the rest of the day.

Hi

The practice of "buybacks" is quite common in the states.  It would not work here since the recreational sector has a different perspective on commercial activities.

Basically the recreationals approach a commercial and pay him not to fish.

The American recreational are in a different league though. If you want red snapper then you pay the snapper fisher to stay at home.

This does not mean that you are stopping an un sustainable fishery from continuing, you are simply buying quota like everyone else in the fishing industry has to when they want to catch more fish.

If your boat only has 60 tons of hake to catch then you have to buy hake quota from another rights holder.

Can you imagine the response if you suggested it here!

sharkbait you need to get some perspective... i suggest you read my post.
Perspective? NO NEED MARTIN!!! All points considered and very well understood! The problem here lies with the rude invasion of the trekker over the angler together with the fact that he's been trying for a kobbie for hours and here they just haul most if not all the fish that was to be found in that particular zone. What chances now exist for the guy with the rod? With all due respect, will the reader of THIS post just take 5 min and put himself in that situation. Question is, would you still feel the same about the trekker?:fbash. This is all based on first-hand experience!

i've been there as well. at sonwabi, and there i fully agree with you.

But being inconvenienced is totally different from accusing someone of wholesale slaughter and rape.

. Hi, with regards to the feeling of resentment,it actually has a lot to do with the pictures of the haul. One of the main reasons contributing to why we are blanking so much:wfish:wfish:wfish:wfish:wfish
