Hi peeps...this was sent to me Trekkers hauled in

yip en yip... maar hier was n rukkie terug dieselfde tipe post.... en toe het ek weer aangehaal maar ek sal dit weer doen...

SASSI klassifiseer "inshore" hake trawling as a "groen" vissery....

talking to myself i guess. All i know is the tiny Kob you see for sale sometimes in the shops... thank the bycatch law... all perfectly legal.

The trekkers are the least of our problems.

Marthin, you dont see much of that happening these days, but the damage was already done many years ago. Its also not really the Hake Trawlers that do the damage, its actually the East Coast Sole fishery. So if you wanted to boycott a fishery for having a detremental affect on fish stocks......then stop eating East Coast Soles. I am very pleased to see that age old practice of catching yound Kob on the East Coast as a bi-catch, has become less of an issue these days......it is evident in the stocks we are catching in the recreational sector I think.

hey all. unfortunatly these guys are as some of you have said not all to blame. if these are all the fish they got in this photo its nothing compared to what some guys cacth over a weeknd.

as for bi-catch most of them are not duskys.  if you want to make an effort to help the species we need to start looking at our nurserys. thats were the big problem is. about 80% of my recaptures are under sized and don not get re released again. the guys are taking them out the estuarys befor they can even start to reproduce.

@Arno.

MCM is under rescourced for this part of the project and they spend all the money on big partys for the groot koppe.

only the anglers can do some thing. its upto us.

Guys I dont think we all shouting the treknetters down, Its merely a sad and fact that most of us anglers spend thousands of rands a year in trying to catch these beautifull looking fish and have then to witness a trek netter taking a nice shoal in front of our eyes. Very disappointing bearing the fact that I was not the one to experience the thrill of catching 1 of those nice looking beasts in the back of the bakkie. ::cavmn I hope there is one left for me to enjoy catching this summer.

spin you allowed 5 kobs this side of augulhas... that's why i think the bakkie picture isn't so bad... its quota for 5 guys.

i know you guys are allowed 5 but then the guys should complain about the netters and the anglers do the same thing.

ur right. if you allowed 5 then the netters actually had a bad day.

Hi Rob

The East Coas Sole fishery is described as "inshore hake".  Those are the guys active between Mosselbaai and PE.

The trekkers are statistically insignificant next to the sole/hake trawl.

Not nice to see!!!!!!

I feel the same way but, at the same time, we really need to make people aware of this. Its a huge problem and something must be done about this.

If I only caught one of those cob I'd be over the moon! The way they just pillaging the ocean makes me sick.

Hi Rage_X

I am asking questions to seek clarity. It is easy to use emotive language but it is often tricky to add hard facts to the hyperbole.

I have been criticised for being abrupt but here goes:

What is the extent of the "problem"?

What component of the catch was "pillaging"?

How does the catch displayed differ from a linefish boat?

eish, so so sad!

Hi

It would be really helpful if people explain why it is sad.

It is so sad because............ (some kob have been caught by commercials and not recreationals?)

It is terrible because..........?

Dankie

Hi JB2, you are correct. But what used to happen in years gone by, was that the Hake Inshore operators used to have more leniency with regards to bi-catch. So, they used to target bi-catch, and East Coast Soles (and Kingklip) more specifically, which would earn them huge revenues, and they would still have their quotas to catch too. I hope Im explaining this well ?? And while hammering the East Coast Soles, the big rolling wheels at the bottom of the nets would damage the bottom structure, which Kob would use for nesting. You can ask anybody that has fished St Sebastian Bay off Infanta area how the "Inshore Hake" vessels used to trawl that area many years ago. What transpired is that our Kob stocks took a massive hammering. Since new measures were put in place, and SA's Hake fishery being awarded International MSC status, there is much less effort in targeting the "Money" bi-catch, which has had a big time positive spin off for species like Kob etc. I know its painful seeing those big Kob from the trek netters, but the damage is minimal, compared to the damage done years ago, like I was doing my best to explain in this comment. Cheers RB
