Westcoast Steenbras and Pignose Steenbras two difrant spesemans. Difrant mouth and difrant feeding habits.

Can anyone  post a photo of these crabs? Is it sand crabs or what? How do you catch them? I will try any bait to get my big steenie.

it's those nasty ones when u are twisting for sand mussel that get's u in the fleshy part between thumb and forefinger. the sand one with the pedals for hind feet.

To catch them is easy, stuff a stocking/onion bag with pilchards and throw it in leave for 20 minutes and pull out..

Ill just turn the hook around cuz steenies swallow the crab from behind easier to swallow for him
Flippie, would that not put your line in jeopardy, those blokes may be halfway dead, but those claws could still part your line? Or not?

Ahoi there Flippy

The guys said there is a lot of peckers and crabs in the surf at Somwasi. As soon as you brake the crab in peases and leave the slitest gap or unprotected flesh the crab bait won,t last a min. Crabs do feed on there own spesie. Small peckers wil soon demolish the bait 2. You got a mutsh better chance with a hole crab as bait and the time in the water it wil be for the steemer to find it is esential for Steenbras sucsess. Natural is always the best way to go. The fackt that there are alot of crab in that area wil have the Steenbras also consentrating on hole crab for food and other baits wil be of second choise. Seen this with lure fishing for Garick. One,s they set there mind on a sertain baitsice  and you can not matsh that targeted baitfish with your lure, you mite aswel give it a mis and sit and watsh the show from the side. Also do not put the hook from the front of the crab. It causes annatural moofment. Crabs ither go backwards or sideways,  and wil always face the ennamy trying to chow them. Those big Steenbras dit not grow that big for nothing. They wil not take a bait if they sence the smalest thing that is not natural.

Thanks guys. Does anyone know if you get them in my area?
My favorit area ook. Sal n google map plaas as jy nie seker is van die plekke nie.

u do get the white crabs in Mosselbay so i suspect u'll get them in Knysna... Just remember once you hit the southern cape coast, a musselcracker travelling over sand to the next rocky outcrop will not swim past one of these white crabbies. They are a favourite cracker bait in the Benecke Klip area in Mosselbay for cracker... If you are expecting a steenie and the tacklebuster picks you up, you might end up with a hook looking like a paperclip and trembling legs...

Thanks for all the info and sorry for the hi-jack.

@Marthin, I would love to have my legs "trembled" by one of them.

@Supatashi, you have a pm.

There was a post on crab as bait a few weeks ago. Some interesting info.  There is a lot of European Green Crabs in the Melkbos area and they seem to be of perfect size for bait so I would try that as bait in the area because there seems to be a lot of undersize fish around. Spotted gully sharks like crabs as well...

Sailfish is spot on with the crabs needing to be whole...I had a few in a fish tank for a while and as soon as one gets injured its a matter of minutes before his budies chowed him. Crabs are very dexterous when it comes to feeding..try floating the crab?

Deur die dag gooi jy met sandkrap. Baie geduld he. In die aand en deur die nag: Chokka-sardyn combo of chokka-makriel combo. Baie chovie olie in die aas inspuit.
