Hi Gents
Was at Sonwabi yesterday. I was picked up a couple of times with reels really screaming. My new Toruim 30 that was used for the first time yesterday sounded like a v8 pulling away. What a sound. Strike and missed all of them. Biting like Steenbra on Blood worm and a 3/0 hook, with a running trace  . What am I doing wrong here? Is my hook to small?
My drag was set loose and the fish was realy running before i striked.
Moedeloos today. Last Sunday i caught one nice Steenbra there on the same setup.
Do you guys use floatation when fishing with blood worm and how do you guys present it?

Would like your input in this.
Thanks
Sakkie^^..

Hi Sakkie
Your hook sice is fine. You say that you strike when they are running. There is your prob. Never strike when a fish is on the run. Yust gently lift the rod and put tention on the line with your thum against the spoolside. I think you strike the hook rigt out of the mouth of the fish. If you by anny time do get a solid hookup then your chanses of snapping either your mainline or the trace snout is increased. Make sure your hook bend towards the tip is all proud and that your bait is set up on your trace nice and not sliding down on your hook. Some guys think or beleave the Steenbras somtimes take the sinker and run with that. I think this might be true due to the fish also feeding on wite mussel that they find in the natural form [shelled].

Hope this wil help.

Hein

Sakkie, I hope the same applies to you guys in the cape as here in Nam. When the big steenbras are present I increase my hook size to a 5/0 or 6/0. ( now there is nothing wrong with a 3/0) When fishing for Steenbra and I dont know what size is present I also use a 3/0.
What works here is to use a 5/0 or 6/0 as you main hook and then add a 3/0 hook as a second ( skelm hook ). The 2 hooks will sit approx 2 cm apart. But make sure both hooks are lying the same way in the bait. More often than not you will see that the fish is hooked with the top one. NBB. make sure your hooks are needle sharp!!
When it comes to striking you sometimes get that hard 2 or 3 bumps after another DONT STIRKE, or your line just goes slack, DONT STRIKE. Wait for the fish to pick up the bait and pull you line stiff and then simply lift your rod. Fish with a very loose drag and limp line. Steenbras dont like to feel resistance.

Start  forming the bait by using a piece of octopuss to hold the hooks in place.

Use the piece of octopuss on the side to wrap around the first piece.

I use grab sinkers and it does not seem to deter the fish from taking the line and run with it. My hooks are needle sharp and are always nice and proud. When i reel in, my bait is demolished, literally ripped apart. I always leave a stubby of line after tying my hooks, this help to keep my bloodworm from slipping down and bunching up.
Do you use a whole worm or do you brake them in half?
I somehow think that maybe i must try a bigger hook, the last Steenbra i caught there was about 4 kg. I have seen regular catches of 7 kg and bigger there.
Gotaway  i am sorry i dont think i will make it today. We must maybe hook up next weekend for some serious Steenbra hunting. I am away on bussiness this week to Alexander bay, Will be back before the weekend. Let me know if you are interested. Sonwabi is on Baden powel drive. Comming from Muizenberg, it will be at the first toilets that you find on Baden Powel drive about 2km's after the last circle.

Cheers

Great post there Simen. Thanks for the detail pic.s.

There is a lot of Belman in between the Steenbras and they mainly feed on the worm and prawn baits. I think when i do target the big steemers your bait presentation is a super 1 and to up a hooksice or 2 is the way to go. You do not mention flouting your bait so i asume it is fished on the bottem.

Steenbra is mostly a bottom feeder, looking at the mouth which is more on the bottom of the head. It searches in the sand for food, that is why they are mostly found behind or in front of sandbanks ( also around rocks ) where there is a lot of water action. The water dislodges their food. You will also if lucky someday see Steenbra standing on their heads in shallow water trying to dig their food out of the sand.

Only problem i have with Sonwabi is that your bait realy quickly dissapears from the hook. Rule of thumb for me is, Line 20 to 30 minutes in the water and then take out and rebait. By this time there is already nothing left on the hook.
O'h what the heck i will just keep on feeding them.
Cheers

@Simen, a question on your rig. I usually use a 6/0 hook in front with a 2/0 skelim at the back for cob and the like, but the skelim hook faces backwards from the front one. Do you think this will make a difference and have you perhaps tried it?
