At a local tackle store they are selling whole anchovies . I think Baitman is the supplier. I have never used them before . Where would you use them , what would you be targeting and how would you present it? Would it also work in estuaries.

have used them with some success on shad! but that being said, the shad were thick at the time! they are lekker to use due to their size! quick and easy to bait up when the fish are running!!! dont know if they work for anything els though!!

one of the deadliest baits around. Better than pike, sard or redeye IMO

I agree with that. have recently caught kob, elf, grunter, white steenbras and numerous smaller flatfish on anchovie.

It is a very oily bait and feels a bit firmer than sardine

its a good bait , better that Piltch , well in my book , you get then at WESTHOOK too , 16 buck for 500g , i like to mix it with my chokka , and even with my mulletfillets , i have found more chovie in the kobs we have caught this season in falsebay than anything else , then yet again we have been getting them on chokka mix though ,i rate it much better than pike , mind you i have been getting old pike .
try a mullet fillet , with an anchovie wrapped inside out around the fillet as a lil 'driftbait ' those oils works wonders!
like above mentioned , its nice to bait up and clip due to the size of them , heck a mate of mine has gotten Baardman too on them !

Thanks, chaps. Pilchards are not my favourite, so I will give the anchovies a shot. Pillies are just too pap when they defrost.

i must agree on that one! fyi, fruit&veg city in s/west have eating quality sardines @30bucks a kg,defrost carefully,as not "iqf" but miles better than :bait"qualitysards! i also love em grilled !!:f1shy

Good Post

I'll definitely give anchovies a try this weekend.

I will post my results on this forum.

Mind you, it will only be my 3rd time.

So far all I caught was see-weed and sun-burn.

Never-the-less, "Ons gat ma aan"

I caught lots of Shad ,using anchovies.I remember the one day getting 3 big Shad at Monwa (Falsebay)on it and the other guys nothing using other baits.

I normally cut it open from the tail (bottom side)right through till the bottom part of the mouth.Insert the hook through the head so that the hook stands proud on top of the head.

Let the trace line run through the body an tie up with elastic.

I guess they will take to it in estuaries but out of experience i will go with more "natural" baits like worms ,prawns livies ect..
