Thanx tien dezend! Looking forward to taking this motor out on the water. My boat needs repairs, mods and COF(EXPENSIVE!) before I can go out, but I'm getting there, slowly.

There has been a lot of guys saying E-tecs are crap. But i struggle in all my searches to find a good reason. Was just wondering what exactly the problem is.
I own 2 E-tecs and have nothing but pleasure from them. I have had one of the motors fixed as a precautionary.It is a simple gasket that leaks that was replaced for R350.
When in the Navy I used to hang out at GNW, I was engineering muster. The PO that was in charge of the outboard shop thought Yamaha was the biggest load of crap and swore by Johnson. Times obviously has changed.
I would really like to know what has and can go wrong with an E-tec. i don't want to be caught out at sea if a fellow angler has had bad experiences with a particular piece of equipment and rather bashes the brand than gives good solid reasons why you should either stay away from it or be aware of issues and prevent them.
I used to hang out on 4x4 forums, and nowhere is brand bashing a bigger and more heated past time than when it comes to Toyota vs Land Rover. I use to dish out my fair share as well. That still did not help either of the guys who owned whatever brand to be better at their sport.

Guys at the agents here by us recon that these are good up to 50hp, larger engines give problems with gearboxes.

going back to the e-techs i heard that once they pass a certain degree the motors cut out and go into limp mode and only a e-tech tech can restore this fault with laptop. not good if surf launching but then again is this just sales talk to sell another brand.
AS AN EX HONDA REP I STILL SAY ALL MOTORS HAVE GOOD AND BAD THING ABOUT THEM. as one said as long as you look after your motors they will look after you. my pops has a set of old thunderbolts mercs and swears by them

Tohatsu is tohatsu and has nothing to do with Yamaha other than they are both manufactured in Japan.
Yes you are also correct in that they are also marketed under the brand name of Nissan in the States and elsewhere....I think that this is to get around the monopolies act in some countries.
They are brilliant motors, tough, rugged, well priced and much cheaper than Yamaha.
Their quality is also excellent but they lack in having dealers in many areas....so when you want repairs you go to the local Yamaha / Evenrude / Mercury guy and he orders spares from up country and rips you off with mark ups.
I sincerly hope that they get their act together as they can become serious competition for Yamaha.
The whole outboard motor industry is a rip off in my opinion + - R 90,000.00 for a Yamaha 90 hp...its crazy.

I used to race inflatables untill 12-15 years ago,I had both Yamaha and Tohatsu 50 HP motors ,short-shafts on Aquarius pencils.At the time the Tohatsu had more "torque" for hole-shot pull-aways,and may even have been slightly faster as stock standard.The difference however was minute and could be negated with blue-printing , proper set-up, and prop choices.
Yamaha had a more user friendly tilting mechanism,and the quality of the mechanism may have been slightly better.Both were equally reliable and I would honestly not like to choose between the two for any one application.
I was lead to believe by the importers, at the time an East London based shop,that the motors have been around since 1952 (in South-Africa that is)
The drawback on Tohatsu's side was that they did not have a serious back-up of dealer networks,and one of the few guys,in my neck of the woods, that I would entrust with a Tohatsu service,passed away a couple of years ago.(I am sure it will have improved since then)
Having said this ,the only thing that I kept when I called racing a day ,was 1x 50 Hp Shortshaft Tohatsu and 2xQuicksilver Stainless props.Just in case I get a mid-life crisis LOL.

After reading all the comments on this thread I contacted 'Nico' who sells Tohatsu and asked him for a quote on a 50hp short shaft with tiller arm, he emailed me a quote of R38 500-00............My Yamaha 50 hp is getting long in the tooth so i have ordered one.
Ps. that price is for the 3cyl 2-stroke.
