I'll agree that Y is a safe option, just like I think most of the other brands are as well ;-)

But then I suppose it all comes down to a matter of opinion, but one thing that is more of a fact, than an opinion, is that Y has become arrogant and charges way too much for their motors.

I don't believe a Yamaha can be 30 to 40% better than a suzuki/mariner/honda etc

I don't have prices on the other makes yet, so can't really comment, but I believe they will be closer to the Suzuki, than the Yamaha.

Just a not - the prices above are list prices, and you can get certain Yamaha motors now at big discounts, but then the Suzuki prices above also don't have discounts taken into account.

Slightly off topic, but I remember a few years ago when Honda motorcycles were more expensive, than Yamaha, because of their obvious superior quality ;-) , but since Yamaha has been doing better at Superbike and Motogp racing, and there popularity has increased, guess what , the Yamaha R1 is now around 20k more expensive than the Fireblade. A few years ago it was the other way round.

Most of the guys run Tohatsu on their ducks becuse theyre faster while not as reliable as yammies..... Its mostly the racing boys....

Two years ago a 150HP Yamaha was R 89 000 including box, prop and cables, now R 179 000.

Means the price on a 2stroke (old design) motor doubled in 2 years, CRAZY.

If I had money to buy a new motor I would probably go Mercury/Mariner or Suzuki or Honda.

Suzuki would actually be my first choice for no particular reason.

The biggest problem is that the dealers are "protected" by only allowing one per major centre.
I would love to know what their actual markup is on a motor that retails for R 180 000 ...

I've been racing ducks since '98,including a win in the trans agulhas with a Tohutsu, have raced Yamaha and Tohutsu, all the competitive guys in the standard and blue print classes run Tohutsu's or Toasters as they are effectionately known. Reason being, power to weight ratio beats the Yammie and the exhaust porting and low down torque is better than Yamaha, in racing you jump around alot and the motor that can get the boat up to speed again the fastest is best. The modified guys all run Yamaha for one reason only, the crankshaft of a Yammie is stronger/heavier and can handle the revs of a modified motor running at 10 000 revs.

Toasters are not sold as Nissan in SA cus the trade rights would make the motors 30% more expensive. They are however excellent engines ,every bit as good as Yamaha ,however I must add that Tohutsu parts are more expensive than Yamaha and there no generic/pirate parts availible.

My next boat motors ,if not 4 stroke will definately be Toasters.

Yup - but they are running a special at the moment (on the 50 4-stroke):

50hetol R 64000.00   4- stroke R68400.00 (on special)

60fetol  R 67500.00    4- stroke R89640.00 

but, I was told I could also get some discount on the Suzi motors , don't know how much though.

Scary that my 85's were 84 for the pair in Oct 07, June 09 and they are now that each.
I know a lot has to do with the strength of the yen, but fook me, we being ripped.
my mate with the boat shop just bought a new duck with 2x 40 4's yamaha. heard the week after he could have got a pair of 50's for 5k less. seems there is some special on them. he had to buy for demo purposes for himself to get a decent price. seems yamaha have lost the plot.

 tkei, I understand that but arn't the Suzukis also made in Japan?? Their 4 is cheaper than the Yamaha 2 ???  FOOK ME 2!!!

There has been a lot of guys saying E-tecs are crap. But i struggle in all my searches to find a good reason. Was just wondering what exactly the problem is.

I own 2 E-tecs and have nothing but pleasure from them. I have had one of the motors fixed as a precautionary.It is a simple gasket that leaks that was replaced for R350.

When in the Navy I used to hang out at GNW, I was engineering muster. The PO that was in charge of the outboard shop thought Yamaha was the biggest load of crap and swore by Johnson. Times obviously has changed.

I would really like to know what has and can go wrong with an E-tec. i don't want to be caught out at sea if a fellow angler has had bad experiences with a particular piece of equipment and rather bashes the brand than gives good solid reasons why you should either stay away from it or be aware of issues and prevent them.

I used to hang out on 4x4 forums, and nowhere is brand bashing a bigger and more heated past time than when it comes to Toyota vs Land Rover. I use to dish out my fair share as well. That still did not help either of the guys who owned whatever brand to be better at their sport.

For every person that tells you E-techs are rubbish you will find someone that thinks they are great. I was a dyed in the wool Yammie fan my whole life purely cus my dad told me to be from the day I was born, and I think with alot of guys its the same. Since having to pay for motors etc myself I had to shop around for best deals, Ive owned Yammies, Tohutsu's, Evinrudes you name it.

The one motor I was completely against was Mercury/Mariner, however when I bought my last duck I got my 90 Mercury at a deal I couldn't ignore, I've had it for three years and to be honest its been the best motor I've owned, great power, starts first time. It really has more to do with how you look after and maintain your equipment than than the brand itself.
