Hi gents, I am looking for a second boat. My first is a Ski Vee 500. I am looking at a Acecraft 18'6. Only problem is the Sharks board have bought the mould so a new one is not possible. What about the 18'6 DV mould? Where is this?
How does it compare to the standard 18'6?
Or would it be better to buy a old 18'6 and strip it down and redo?
I would like to make it lighter and use 60's instead of 85's if possible.
Assistance appreciated from the pro's.

How much do you want to spend?? Hens teeth I know but try and get an Oceanrunner17........its actually 18'and runs very well on 40's......superb boat!!(biased I know)

I really like the look and limited reports I have read about the Ocean runner 17. Problem is they have sold the mould to somebody in Namibia. Have not been able to find a second one yet.
Also only heard good things about them. They have mainly been used in the Cape as far as I understand.

Howzit man. I dont think you comparing apples with apples with a 18'6 Ace vs a OR17. The Ace is a much heavier, "bigger" boat per say. The Ace runs on double the power and is prob more than double the weight too.
You can still have an 18'6 Acecraft built with original moulds and the moulds are straight as a pin, but if you go new, by the time shes fully fitted out, you 400k plus (if you go 4 stroke). There is the odd 18'6 Ace that pops up second hand, but a lot of people have done some strange mods to them, which you may / may not like.

Ive seen a few beautifully refurbed Aces here is KZN running F70 Yamahas, but if you go that route, you prob close on 60k for the refurb (if you put new deck and bouyancy and clean the boat up properly), then 200k plus for new motors and steering, so at the end of the day, if you pick up a fixer for 50k, you above 300k all in.
I just fully restored an 18'6 Viking, (pics in this thread), so know all about hidden costs etc.

Many thanks for the detailed reply. I like the old 18'6 so thought that if using modern materials the weight could be reduced and smaller motors fitted. As you mention this may not work or be cost effective.
I don't want a heavy rig but am looking around for something a bit bigger than my Ski Vee 500. Possibly in FC as this is more game fish friendly set-up than CC.

I may also look at a used Yeld 17ft-if I can convince myself to change to a Cat! Have only heard good things about the Yeld.

there are 2 variants of the 18,6 AceCraft
1) Semi Deep V , most of the legend boats are this variant
"Cross Cut" "Yellowfin", "Bonito" , "Highlander". Also the hull the Sharks board uses
it has a deep vee in the bow to cut chop but moderate deadrise aft and fairly stable at rest
2) Deep V , this is a later derivative and suited for areas where long runs to fishing grounds are required
many of these hulls are in the cape
this hull requires trim tabs or counter rotating motors to counter prop torque if the setup is done right its a better riding hull than the SDV version but because most 2 stroke 75-90 don't come in counter rotation or boats not fitted with trim tabs it has a reputation of wanting to lie on one side.
Alternatively this hull will work very well with a big single / kicker configuration to reduce prop torque but still a weird concept for SA

You must instruct one crew that whilst running, his job is to balance the boat at all times, ie. constantly moving opposite to the boat's lean
Also, with power trim and tilt, very small adjustments on one or both motors easily keeps the boat level
Trim tabs are for bigger boats
Counter rotating always a bonus, especially maneuvering in tight spaces
Semi deep V not good in rougher seas because it will bang a bit more
