Like the CC!!! Bennie, how do these 555 hulls handle? I think I recall some negative feedback on the 501 (sorry chaps, I know this is the Ace thread, but just asking).
I am not familiar with the boats so I cant really comment. These are apparently new so maybe they are sorted? I believe the original ones were very heavy. They do look good...

In your opinion, did they broach and or would you say the ride was hard/soft compared to say Mallards or Z-Craft?

Well I had an Cobra 525 before my Ace 555 and for me the Cobra's ride is harder then the Ace u must remember that the Ace Cat 555 is a very heavy boat and that's teh reason why I think the ride is softer and much more smoother then teh cobra the ace is also wider and more stable then the Cobra I had never experiance any broaching from my Ace 555 for me it's the best boat in its size I will always buy a Ace Cat 555 it handels any sea condition like a breeze I had never gone on a z-carft before so I can't say anything about it

Hi guys,

Mine is not a ACE cat 555 - so slightly of the current topic, but an ACE nonetheless - this boat has quite a history (original name from 1984) and someone might even know it from somewhere, sadly she stood @ a "friend" for 4 years and she was really badly abused- but she is back home now and I'm renovating her - motors, buoyancy, carpets, upholstery etc.

HelloC,

Nice boat and good luck with the restoration. I have the baby sister 16.6 I noticed you mentioned you like to go fishing at Santa Maria, Nyaka. imm currently planning a trip there, have you towed your boat there yet?

Themstones,

I wouldn't suggest towing your boat through the elephant reserve as the sand is really thick and the locals spin dongas with their 2 wheel drives - it can be done but you can potentially loose a axle or tire/s on the way. Easiest way is to launch at the Maputo Marina - but you will have to budget for launch and storage fees. If you do decide to go through the park make sure you have spare wheels and take your time, and watch out for the locals doing 80 km/h around a blind corner heading straight at you !! - people have written off their vehicles and have been hurt like this before

If you require any additional info on the area feel free to contact me - Hugo @ 082 5874512

HelloC,

Welcome to Sealine

The 18'6 Ace Craft is a classic

Look how deep that boat is from keel to gunwales

This is what keeps the water outside the boat where it belongs and makes it track!

Good luck man...you will never look back

If you have lots of spare loot you can buy new designs

But THAT boat will hold it's own in any company

Mike,

Varkit!

That's thinking out the box!!

Brilliant for trimming at speed, and also harbour manoeuvres

Well done

PS:

This is my (the standard) setup

Note the halfwings on the cavity plates..works like a charm and maybe not as perfect as trimtabs, but very easy to trim laterally and also stays on the plane longer at low speed with the motors trimmed down

I would really like to hear how the handling differs at sea as compared to your old set-up

Fakawidan,

You are a wild man!

That whole set-up came out perfectly as far as I am concerned!

When one motor goes, still reckon you need a 4 stroke in the middle for trawling though...

Tammo and Ocean Bounty,

This is San Michelle

She had 90 Honda's, so I suppose the new? Evinrudes justify the price tag?

Eugene Hope is a standup guy, and before him, the boat belonged to Nick de Kock I think

Don't know the new owner though

Hi Thika,

Thanks for the welcome message, I will keep you guys posted on my progress with her....I must say I can barely sleep and cannot wait for weekends to work on her. It's been a good 6 years since the boat was on the ocean so I cannot wait to get on the water again !!
I think if I ever had the money I would rather replace the motors with newer models than replace the boat itself...

Tammo,

See post #517 above

HelloC,

The breakneck trailer looks solid..is it still on the road, and how's the flotation certificate?

Good luck once again!

Hi Thika,

The trailer was rebuilt by my father and myself a few years ago, so still solid albeit a bit over engineer as it is &*%$# heavy!! I need to replace the axles though as they are rusted to pieces - want to put a single LA axle on instead. The buoyancy is a problem and needs to be redone however - I want to get some foam sheets from Sondor and fill the hull with it , if my calculations are correct 1 need 1.2 cubic meters of foam to be complaint (6 sheets @ 0.2 cubes per sheet)

Came Across this boat today

1970's Wooden kit - needs very little TLC - New Deck.

The boat is almost 40 years old and to appreciate the cabinets on that boat that still closes with a deep thud - they dont make em like that anymore.
