Wow Craig some awesome catches.

How do you clip the sinker and bait together?I lose some distance when casting with a sinker and bait because it goes flying through air ,swinging from side to side which is not very aerodynamic.I think the "clip method" could remedy this and get me a few extra meters.

looking forward to getting my 1st Bloemhof cat at the end of the month with Skuimkop,I think we are also staying at Die Hoek.

Do you have any tips for the venue?

Enigma, great catches! Would love to get anything close to that! Those cats look very industrial on top of the cement block...lol!

I had some barbel action myself on Saterday evening at Cilliers(Vaaldam). Unfortunately we didn't have enough bait and had to pack up early after we lost a few more(line(30lbs) broke off on the one trace and on my last hook up the hook didn't set properly). Would be better prepared next time for sure...

Only one I could get out ...6.22kg

Thanks Naruto ,I have read that thread a few times,cant believe I missed the clip bait part.

@Enigma- do you reckon I use a 1mm leader on the jerry b 50 lb braid? or should we go heavier.By the sounds of things we are only going to target 20 kg plus cats,so we will be using big baits.

Lastly how far did you cast your baits in?

There's plenty left and I returned all these, biggest was a touch under 25kg and 3 were between 21.75 and 22.85kg

60-80m cast is fine but if you can drop the baits about 20-30m from the opposite bank

I fished 0.60mm hooklines with 40lbs Jerry Brown Braid. You have to fish heavy as a lot of roots and rocks are washed open and then use only a 15-20lbs sinker line with a knot in to break the sinker off if if snags in the rocks

Back in the day we used to travel all the way from CT to the Orange River for monsters like that!

Great to see fish like that again...would be nice to feel the pull of a giant bone head on my line again!

p.s. we used an 0.20mm line...whats this 40lb braid! LoL

I was broken twice on the braid trying to straight stick it to keep it out of a tree, some big powerful fish.

But it's you shark guys and this no Photo no fish mentality but hey it's fun.

Well Done Craig, the only Barbel I've ever caught was on a spinnerbait fishing for bass LOL but even I know that those are some amazing fish.

Great catches... really want to improve my pb to 20kg+ this year hopefully sooner rather than later.

Can you tell me when fishing a whole bait like a muddy of about 500g - 1kg as bait with a 10/0 Circle, do you let the fish pick up the bait run and stop to swallow the bait before setting the hook on his second run?

The reason I ask is I have had a few nice runs on whole baits but when I try set the hook on the first run the bait seems to be pulled from their mouth...

Any advice?

I have been using circles for just over a year now.
My limited experience so far is to let him have a nice long run and be patient.
To give you an idea we usually use the alarm stands and fish about 150 m away from the house.
When the barbel takes the bait we take a good 30 seconds to get to the rods(we are more os du randt than bryan habana lol)

By the time we get to the rods mr whiskers is on his way to the next province.

Just Tighten the drag to set the circle.

Some guys prefer to point their rod at the fish and reel back slowly but for some reason I keep reeling the bait out of the fish's mouth when I do this.

Maybe try give him some more time,It takes a while to get use to letting him run for so long without "striking"

Thanks for the reply.

I normally give them about 10 seconds or so of running and pick up the rod and reel in slowly till I feel the pressure and then lift the rod to set the hook properly. This seems to work fine when fishing with platties or smaller baits but when fishing with bigger bait I think I need to give it more time.

Going fishing this weekend, will give it a try and let him munch his food a little and then tighten the drag rather than reeling in.
