Sorry to do this, but can the Sealine geniuses out there please offer advice about fishing the Breede river?  I'm going there for the 1st time at the end of Oct and am trying to gather as much info as possible before getting there.  I tried searching Sealine, but can't find what I'm looking for.

I have a small boat and plan on launching at Witsand.  Obviously will take chokka and sards along.  Where are the best places to find other bait - bloodworm, prawn, mullet.  And then down to the fishing.  I have obviously heard of Kragdrade & Goudmyn, but have no idea where these and other spots are on that huge expanse of water.

PLEASE HELP!!:imnew

Hi Minnow,

I'm not terribly familiar with angling, but we were up at the Breede last February on a Zambezi shark expedition (yes, they are found there occasionally) and had to try a variety of fishing methods to catch our live bait.  Also accompanied my husband (who does research on bloodworm) to the Breede last year to collect the worms from the river mouth.

One of the better places we found for bloodworm was on the flats across from Witsand (exposed at low tide) - but take care to stick to the permit conditions (5/day).  The prawn flats just upriver from there are an excellent place for pumping prawns.

I have attached a few maps of the river so you can hopefully find some of the spots you are looking for.  We caught some nice fish in the Groenpunt area about 5.5 km upriver.

If you happen to land any elasmobranchs (sharks, skates or rays) may you please let me know - especially if you find your kob are taken by a BIG FISH!!!  Zambezi season should be starting shortly!!

Cheers, Meag

hi minnow there are plenty of spots for u to get some livies in the river mouth 1.in between the hotel n kraaltjie(where u launch) just chum a bit lots of mullet, strepies and blacktail 2.the old wooden jetty to the left of the hotel 3.further up the river near "rooiwalle"

as far as bait goes fresh chokka is a killer for those big kob add a small glowstick inside the chokka at night, sards and pike are also great but dont bother at night with them those bastard barbel wont leave it alone
mainly during early morning and evening would be better
take some red eye fish oil and squeeze it slowly down the sards mouth with a syringe for some extra, you can either pump mud prawns to the right of the kraaltjie(where u launch" or up by "rooiwalle" or on the large sandflats opposite the "kraaltjie" you also will find your bloodworm and pencil bait there

teres plenty of leeries in the river try near the mouth near the hotel and wooden jetty with a livey or a popper, opposite the kraaltjie on the incoming tide for grunter and steenbras aswell as "rooiwalle" and streicher, goudmyn, paatjie and powerlines for those monster kob good luck and leave us one or two

Hi Meag

I had to cut short my last trip to Breede in Nov, when the storm moved in. Attached is a pic of a skate I caught at a place I call White Rock. (Goudmyn area) I am sure this fella lives there, as my crew and I have managed to catch this one (or similar), three times in the last two years, at the same spot. Always caught on chokka. It is a strong and clever fighter. This time I was determined to win and eventually managed to get it close to the boat and off the bottom, after about an hour. Right at the end the skate surfaced, flopped over belly up and just hung in the current, making it as hard as possible to get closer. I took a few pics and then release it to fight another day.

Going back to Breede just before full moon in Feb. Does anyone know if the river has cleared up and if anything big has come out lately?

If you can get your hands on fresh chokka then you are in for some C for serious fun Feb is a brilliant month on the breede and 7th of Feb is full moon and all the mal boaters that have tore up the river in the name of being Ass holes have returned to their sanatoriums and places of rest , its going ot be good very good . As for sots well anything from rooi valle to Strickers will be good for cob, the higher the better. Fish the area i front of Mud lark guest house from the dead low for the first 2 hrs of the in coming for grunter. If the wind is not pumping try drifting this area with shit shot a long strop with either prawn or blood worm and you will get hook ups on every pass.

we are going to be there over literally at the end of the month (28th).

Looking at getting my double figure cob. Hopefully not a double Zero, but anything from 10kg up will be appreciated.

Any ideas on where the best bait is?

OK and the sandbank DIRECTLY across from the Breede River Lodge (On the Infanta side of the river) historically has provided some of the best juvenile leerie fishing you could ever experience anywhere. 30+ per session - as in 90minutes. From lowtide on the push, cast towards the Lodge and you should get loads. Small poppers, and noisy surface lures will do the trick. The tide pushes in pretty quick, so before you know it you will be waste deep so make sure that someone in a boat is there to pick you up.

For grunter, walk a few hundred meters upstream (on the sandbank) and you will see reedbeds on your left. SERIOUS prawn beds there, and you will see loads of grunter tailing. (A bugger getting them to eat though - I have watched them nosing crab and prawn fly patterns less than a rodlength from my rod tip - and not eat it. Can be frustrating). You should do OK with fresh prawn though - Good Luck!

If you have access to boat or fishing ski then try dragging some Rapalas from Rooiwalle all the way to Strychers (White House). Mate of mine got 3 fish on Rapala on Saturday, 3kg, 8kg and 19kg. Rapala has probably been most effective this last season.

Favourite spots and baits aside, fishing the Breede is not easy. You have to adapt to the currents and need to suss out the tides as soon as you get there, because it turns at diffent times as you go up the river etc.

We used to spend every available minute on the water, of the precious couple of days we had at Witsand. Battling the sun, tides and pumping wind, can take it out of you at times though.

These days we opted for a different approach and are not scared to get off the water, if the conditions are not so good. We generally launch in the late afternoon and then fish for as long as we can. There  is no better place to be, than on a glassy Breede with the moon rising over the hills and a reel going off. Then we try to sleep and dream of the hundred pounder.

In the mornings we start at approx 04:00 and fish for as long as we can. If the ride gets bumpy as the wind picks up against the current, we head for my campsite. We shower, sleep, eat, re-gear and before you know it, it is time to launch again.

We found with this approach you stay fresh, have a lot more luck and enjoy the fishing. Enjoy the Breede, it is a special place. See u there... :fishn

can you breede regulars tell me something..... would it be possible to go fish the river and take some camping gear with and then when it gets dark just go onto the bank and pitch the tent and carry opn fishing the next morning?? How strict are the farmers that own those river banks?

Never seen it done and would not try it.

You would probably get flak from Nature Conservation these days as well.

They have a office in Witsand and are up and down the river all the time.
