Blue Water beach has developed big time, I go passed the parking area, through all the houses till you reach the end of the development. There is a gravel road which links onto the pavillian bathing areas for the Motherwell folks. I fish anywhere from this area all the way back to the parking area.
I have not fished the river mouth area for sharks, but have caught good fish here, Steenie and Kob, good numbers not good sizes though.

Report Back on Circle Hooks,
Went and fished off the old pier at Swartkops today to try out the new circle hook traces.
I caught a small smooth hound on a throw bait (circle hook) and swan him out, again on a circle hook swim rig.
The bait swam around for over two hour before I got a huge take. I could feel that it was not a shark, but this was BIG.
Fishing off the pier I had to work the fish back to the beach to land him. I got one look at the biggst spear nose I have ever seen. The bugger took me under the pier and snapped me up.
Has anyone ever caught a skate / ray using live smooth hound (4-5KG)?
Circle hooks worked a gem and will try them again.

Hi Willow, I have not done much live bait simming myself, but have never heard of this before? Maybe some of the guys could add comment.
One of the guys I was fishing with recons that the shark may have been dead, but it was still swimming welll. I actually saw the increase in activity before the bait was taken.
The Spear nose has a large mouth and a good set of teeth so who knows?

Howsit trophy, i have had a similar experience. was at struisbaai, and i pulled out a big diamond ray, it had had my bait (head and stomach section of a bonnie), and a smoothhound of around 5-7kgs in its mouth, smoothhound was barely alive when we pulled it out.

A shark will alway chomp a ray from either wing so you are sure a hook up. Let the shark do his business and only pick up the rod once you are getting a long and solid run.

Trophy nice illustrations, very helpful. i have only used a big live bait once, a smoothy of about 7-8 kilos +, used a normal slide trace, put one hook on the nose between eyes and the other just in front of the dorsal fin. got picked up big time, dunno what it was, nearly ran me clean (+/- 800m) broke my reel, the anti reverse and stopper gave in under the pressure, had to hold my handle as tight as i could to stop it from going backwards. after an hour and half, lost it. wound all the line in to find my 1mm leader had been worm through from rubbing against the sharks body. felt like someone had taken sand paper and rubbed it against my line. i was upset to loose the fish, but it was awesome, to feel the power of the fish at the other end!!
