I second that Torium 14 is super!

I cast 2oz over 100m with ease on an 11ft Maxrod on 0.4 mono.  With braid, much much further and that's not putting any effort into it.  Cast all day and not destroy your thumb...

With the 110H on 3 ounces you need to lightly thumb the spool just before touch down - but really it's a super little reel.  I have 100m braid backing on mine just to increase the mono capacity a little bit.

It has 6 centrifugal lugs to adjust - not 8 as stated by Enigma and I find that 2 lugs popped out is perfect.  It does not overwind - unless you cast very hard into the ground :~0

you need to think about this as to what you want to achieve. Inner peace or fish on the rocks?

I have used small multiplier setups for many years and love them for lures. But they are simply not as effective as a spinning setup in getting the hits.

I still use the small multiplier setup (reels include Daiwa SL20SH; Progear 501; Penn 535 mag; Daiwa Saltist 30) but that is when the fishing is easy and the # fish landed not that important. I am also reasonably adept at the casting, winding a level line thing. I will go with a Penn 525 mag for my next one; and will be able to cast from 20g upwards a good long way.

However.

A spinning setup is much faster to cast, retrieve. The faster retrieve simply gets bit quicker. light braids allow you to cast ridiculous light lures a long way that is simply not practicable on a multiplier. The simplicity of the reeling and line managment also allows you to keep your eyes on the water and on your lure longer and you scan more of the surroundings. So when I have to land a fish and they are expected at the rate of one or two in a session - spinning reels are the way to go.

Just explain my use of a multiplier. Every session will involve wading / swimming so the reel will be submerged in water with a lots of small particles. Most spots will require casts of 20-30m and the odd place 50-60m, so distance isn't an issue. I've got spinning setups that will do this but they just don't last.

At the end of the day the SL20 is probably the best bet, less bearings and no Anti-Reverse bearing that is always the first to give when wading

Keep the Anti reverse roller clutch of the Tor14 in mind as they have discontinued the reel and getting a replacement ARB will be a problem in the near future then.

Thanks for the heads-up on the ARB Enigma. Sealed spinning reel would be an option but the price is to much, I will mostly be targeting cobs and the odd shad and garick.

I have 2 Torium 14's and a Trini 14.....magic and versatile. Have braid on 2 and mono on one. My 10 cents is see if you can find a good second hand 14.....also easy to strip and service....I put on Carbontex and mag-it. I also fish a SL20 with braid.....great reels.....but love the 14's.

A 15/30 with the 6:1 gear ratio upgrade from Old Salt maybe? Throw in the mag cast control and it will be a little beast

Jip, that's my current reefs setup, 15/30 is just a tad big for my liking... but thinking about it.

The torium 14 gets my vote, love mine to bits!

Have a look at the shimano charter special TR2000, they are fantastic reels that can really take a lot of abuse, best of all they come with a level wind!

Interesting discussion.
There is actually a "baitcasting revolution" going on at the moment with many lure anglers switching from grinders to new age ultra strong "baitcasters" . Thew reasons are old - same reason most serious bassers mainly use revolving spool reels.Combined with braid these new style reels are amazing. There are a number of models out there including the Abu morrum, but they are hard to come by and also quite pricey.
I have used mainly baitcasters for years and can offer the following advice: The reel must be light (so no daiwa saltists, etc), it must have a high ratio (about 6:1 is good) and it should have a level wind mechanism, especially if you are fishing braid or mono below 10kg (above that its irrelevant). A one piece frame is nice but not essential. If you can convert to fishing with a trigger grip andthe reel mounted higher on the rod USA style, so much the better. (The Daiwa Coastal rods come like this; so do many USA branded rods.
One further bit of advice: avoid thin light spoons like the thin toby as they are bad news, especially in the wind.

that lexa sounds a beast tackle :shock:

next on list for me might be the adrenalin x pro master 20.. half what a l20 costs with a slightly wider spool that might mean more line cap.. has 1 less bearing though but solidly made and some well known folks had a hand in design of this reel.. proudly designed in south africa on side of reel :sa:

if bux wasn't an issue i'd add a Illex Ashura pepper Akoya Pearl as rod of choice..

Cheap, reliable and very easy to cast on light set-ups and more than capable of landing what you target

Mag-it also availible for it.

My son and I both use one and they are very effective little reels.

Penn 310 Gti is also an option.
I don't like lever winds I removed the one on my 310 Gti

Some feedback...

I have been using my Shimano 5000FJ (spinning reel) with 20lb fireline for the most part.

I recently got hold of a Calcutta 400s (the one without level wind), but haven't been able to test it properly, looks just about perfect for what I need. I will be using it with one of my old bass rods, but may upgrade to something that can cast a bit heavier lure.

Calcutta... braid or mono? I see the guys use 30lb braid for tarpon on the Calcutta 400?
