Salt water flyfishing

Hi Guys,

Doesn't anyone on this site do any flyfishing?  I'm keen to chat about salt water flyfishing in  particular. It would be great to hear from someone who does this...

I have been intrigued by flyfishing and have only had occasion once to try it at a trout farm in Mpumalanga...it was like canned hunting, but it was nevertheless quite exhilerating. Saltwater flyfishing in this country is still fairly new and it has been very quickly overtaken by the advent of dropshot fishing. I think this is because dropshot fishing is better suited to our surf conditions.

I do however think it was a couta.

I think you are correct in assuming it was a couta. The bite pattern on that bonnie is way too clean to be a johnny. Sad luck, though. It would have been interesting to fight a couta on a fly rod!

Thanks for that info. I will certainly check out that website. Salt water flyfishing is relatively new but there certainly is a lot of interest. I took a couple on my boat recently who only wanted to fish for Dorado on fly rods. A mate of mine caught some on fly a few weeks back just off Durban.

I must agree, fishing in a trout dam is somewhat limiting. I much prefer going for the wild ones in the rivers etc. Bass on fly rod is also very exciting. I would certainly recommend that. They give a much more exhilirating fight than the trout.

Although I do enjoy dropshot fishing as well, I find it too similar to Bass fishing. The only real benefit for me is that the species range is far greater when dropshot fishing. I like my fights big and ugly!

I havn't done much for the last year or so, mainly been doing regular fishing, but now is the time to get back to salt fly.

Maybe try in Durban Bay again soon!

thats not nice I said I was new at saltwater  but here we go

1.clouser minnow

2. lefty's deceiver (various patterns)

3. there are also many prawn, scud and streamers types available

most of the flies above can be fished in different sizes and colour variations depending on species and fish size. I gent who will know better about saltwater flies is Sudesh Prasad, I fished with him in last years nationals. http://www.bamba.co.za. give him a email
