Rods for casting long range

Reel: Tica Sceptre 10,000 on my Shimano 10,000 I rarely get over 180m

20 or 30lbs Jerry Brown Braid Leader

C+ HyperCast 0.18mm, XX 0.17mm

The Tica is a bit big for the DC but fits like a hand in a glove on the SkyCaster and BM Garrick Blank

Shimano Ultegra 5500 would be my distance option if i didn't have the Tica's already

Small body, huge spool with taper, releases line better and with 200m off a full spool the reel still looks like it's full so you don't have the added friction of line over the lip once you get to 180m (like on the Shimano)

The Tica 10'000 is a beautiful reel and although not a baitrunner it's literally 1.5 turns of the tensioner from casting drag to baitrunning drag. It's for long range casting and not tempo fishing and retails between R500-600 with all aluminium body, always been my spod reels.

My other personal favourites are the Antega 6000 but didn't mention them as they not commercially available in RSA (Although Awa-Shima I don't sell them here anymore as the baitrunner clicker plate breaks off - Guaranteed) but a casting ans spodding reel of note.

Yes Naruto you have actually hit a point here.

Once you have the rod to cast for distance then the next lot comes into play

Power,
Release Timing
Reel
Mainline
Leader
Leads

Casting far is not reliant solely on the rod, it's the rod, the reel, the line and the angler's skill and proficiency

Enigma, what outfit would you recommend for distance and tempo fishing? I found the guys where getting the bigger fish far out and they where getting them at a steady tempo, not just 1's and 2's!

DC 13' and a Shimano Ultegra 5500?

I don't think I'll be comfortable with non-baitrunner reels. Anyway, the day I struggle to cast over 180m I'll be a happy man !!
I think I'd rather go for the shimano 10000. I think you can still manage tempo angling although your bait is 180m deep. But as mentioned earlier in this thread, the rods and set up are not necessarily for long distance casting to 180m per say, its also for casting into a strong wind pumping in your face and you need to get to 100m where the fish are. In that case, I would go for shimano 10000 anyway. My humble opinion.

KT, Tempo fishing is more than 30 fish in a session.

Anything less than 40 at distance can easily be accommodated by a non Baitrunner reel.

I have 10 x 10,000 and 12 spare spools so you don't have to tell me about 10,000

Once again for fishing up to 150m with a M1.5 or 130m with a M1 then all you need is a G2 1-2 T53 with one tip.

The thread is about long distance casting

The most extreme distance casting combo is the Skycaster or Garrick with a Tica Sceptre or Ultegra loaded with 0.16mm and a good braid leader.

Say what you want about the braid leader but it allows for the rod to be loaded from the first movement of the cast it is thinner and thus reduces the amount of line twist in long casting

Let's not confuse this thread with a rod to cast 120m with a M0 that's not Casting Long Range.

Fishing consistantly over 150m is casting long range

What I'm trying to clear up for myself is, would the smaller diameter of a 8000 or 6000 spool not be better in relation to a rod fitted with low riders?

No, the size of the reel is irrelevant.

I fished 2 days with 1 leader on both my rods at last years nationals.

I fish my Skycaster 15' with a an Ultegra 14,000 130lbs braid leader and 50lbs braid mainline.

the technology of the guide makes the size of the reel irrelevant, you can even use the old Nitehawk and get improved performance.

We're way, way, way, WAY behind on the guide tech. The Popping crowd been doing it for 10 years and the Euro, USA and Aus surf castes been doing it for over 13 years now and only now do we start looking into the technology.

My saltwater and freshwater rods been fitted with Fuji Lo-riders for 6 years now and never looked back

Good eve Enigma,

What are the cost of the Skycaster's 15' and who sells them??

Next week it is bonus month- want to upgrade to DC's 13' with Shimano's 10000. Please advise what would be the best main line, leader line, sinkers and (size of Bol) and swivels to buy with it.............. the best leader length????

At which dams do you use these casting machines????

Thank you very much for all the advise. ::slr::and you.

Snakes... From my own experience main line is normally 0.17mm Double X or 0.18mm Awa-Shima. Leader that I use is 17lbs Double X brown Cameleon. Can cast up to a P5. Might need heavier leader for bigger weight. My personal preferance is M1.5 with small bomb for casting further. I hook my hooks into the bomb for aerodynamics. Still need to practice casting a P3 or P4 with bomb...

Good choice on rods and reels.

Go round to Wesley at the Carp in and tell him Craig Neil sent you in and get him to help you. Wesley himself spent many years as a Junior Mpumalanga angler and his father Deon Smitty of Champion dips is still in the Mpumalanga Snr A side and him and I fish a lot together.

If Wesley feels a bit out of the game make an appointment with Smitty to meet him at the shop and he'll sort you out one time (He has SkyCasters, SkyCaster III and SkyCaster IV and T53 and Shimano 10' all of which I custom built for him)

Lines, I would be bias here and left the XX because of the line twist (then again I will fish the XX if I can't get these) This will say a lot of what some other people have to say and you'll see it in a full page this month in the bank angler

Swivels Kingfisher or Fear None power swivels

Leader 20lbs Jerry Brown 0.18mm braid or 0.35mm ION Power, good for up to 120gr weight and small bol

Hooks (see the add)

Weights, LB, Super Weights or True Cast.

I got some 0.14mm Awa Shima C+ hypercast. Going to put them on a 10000 XTE with 18lbs leader.....Let's see what the combo will do.^^..

Is the skycaster not in the R5,000 range?

Hi everyone,

I am now the proud owner of 2 x Sensation DC 13" rods and Shimano DL 10000 RA reels. What a pleasure to cast with these rods. Tried them out this weekend and every cast was a master piece. (Wind was blowing so could not  measure distance) but handling and playing a fish awesome. Cast up to a P7 with ease. Main Line 0.17mm Black XX, Leader 17BL Brown XX and 20BL XX for the heavier weights.

Thanks for all the advise Nurato and Enigma.

Hi Guys

I'm new to sealine and i find your posts very 'educative'.

my first proper set of rods i bought was shimano alivios. I wanted to buy the 12ft 3.5lb but the guy at 'western accessories' said they do not have them in stock. he then said that many find the 3.5lb to be a crappy rod and he sold me the 5.5lb rods.

Was it a good buy or should i go back M@&R him?

Good as a Bliksem tool or a Spodding rod and will sort any of Douglas's Barbel in the Vaal river out

Probably not the best for casting an M1 but will give great distances and will not break nearly as easily as the many 3lbs Alivios we get back.
