Redbait....what is it?

FYI fresh red bait doesnt stink at all, Noddy can vouch for that, its the ones that are starting to rot from laying in the sun that stinks... so you know you have fresh red bait if it doesnt stink like Reefman :breakd:

Ok, heres another one to answer for me. I have heard that some people prefer to use the smelly old red bait and others prefer the fresh stuff straight off the rocks.

Any comments on what you prefer?

Nick, as per Dubsketeer, the moment the Red Bait detaches itself from the rocks, it's dead.. that is when the smell starts coming..

 

as for what to use.. i suppose there isn't much of a preferance, though Fresh ones do not smell, yet results are similar to that of the smelly ones..

 

Get fresh ones, and freeze them in packets, then use a packet on a trip.. that way you dont have to make your hands dirty all the time..

some of the "old timers" swear by stinky old redbait, which does make sense cause how do the fish eat the redbait when it is still fresh? unless they carry hacksaws with them LOL  i would imagine they eat it once it has been detached thus starting to rot.....

One tip I got was to put it in a small bucket with a lid and make a small hole in the lid, when you can start smelling it then its good to go!!!

True.. Mike.. the old ballies swear by it xse! touching that stuff leaves a few days long smell in your hands !! :breakd:

 

but yah, pick fresh ones, freeze them.. when next you use them.. the moment they defrost.. ahahah.. pinch your nose.. those things smell dangerously death defying xse!

a mate of mine was picking up red bait in the strand the other day and a bunch of japanese tourists approached to find out what he was up to. the one oke spoke very broken english but had a translation function on his cellphone so he got the gist that it was bait. before he could say another word the one of the japs grabbed a piece and began noshing on it. apparently he projectile vomitted within 3 seconds. classic stuff.

particularly for galjoen, some okes swear by it being vrot, but being temperemental fish, fresh works one day, vrot the next. to make it vrot properly, leave it in a container outside in a cool, shady spot. just remember that every day you have to pour off the liquid that accumulates otherwise it will go sour and then it's no good. there's a big difference between sour and vrot...

How do ppl bear to even bring that stuff near thier face. It makes me wana hurl by just cutting it open! Just thinkng of putting that in my mouth makes me wana....(nick has to run to the toilet quick!)

:vic::Tip: Wet wipes take away the smell immediately. Then maybe the missus will still come near you.

my mate once hid a tub of red bait under the wooden walkway to Dawidkraal

We picked it up a few months later when we got out that way again.

Nobody wanted to touch the stuff and eventually dumbed it back into the ocean.

I'm sure that stuff was poisonous

My dad used to keep red bait in the garage for weeks before using it. You could smell it out side the garage (must be the reason why he never parked the car in there)

Fresh off the rocks it's lekker. Not so the next day!

But yeah, my old Grandfather, bless his soul, only fished with 'matured' red-bait. And I reckon he was the Galjoen King of all time!

I guess it would be the same as my grandad showing us how to eat limpets (perde voete) of the rocks.

But limpets surely do not smell like the redass. Even if it does not smell, the thought of that smell festering in you stomach.....

Dubz and i collected at Muizenberg, behind the supertube. there was so much, some as big as rugby ball, that stuff were so full of meat.
