Me and a mate (Sealine alias - Kromstok) went on a quick fishing trip to Ponta the past weekend. Another mate of mine (Ettienne) was already there on holiday for the past week. We got through the border at about nine the Friday morning and got to Ponta 9:30. Me and Ettienne tackled up to fish from the surf and Kromstok went on his maiden voyage on his newly acquired fishing ski. Me and Ettienne went around the point to fish the piece of beach between Ponta and Kosi. The tide was dropping and it was in the middle of the day so we did not expect much. We found nice piece of broken reef in front of the Praia du Sol development. The fishing was very slow until the tide turned. I got a hookup on a chokka/red prawn bait. It turned out to be a nice Bonefish of 63cm. I left my camera at the house in my haste to wet a line. It gave a awesome fight on the 11foot 1 – 2 oz bluemarlin spinning rod. The fight on braid is really a world apart from nylon. You can really feel every shake of its head. I hooked into another really good fish that turned out to be a nice wave garrick of about 1.5kg. Things went quiet and we decided to get some food in out bellies. We went out the evening to a spot about a third of the way to Malongane. It was very quiet fishing wise. A couple of anglers from Durban caught a nice Blackfin near the restaurant on the beach. The next morning we went to the same spot as the previous evening. The sea was a bit rougher. The fishing did not improve much with me only catching a small 3 spot pompano. Kromstok tried to launch the kayak but was flipped time and again in the shore break. He only managed to get out on his 3[suP]rd[/suP] or 4[suP]th[/suP] try. He returned 2 – 3 hours later with a very nice queenfish that he caught on dropshot. It measured 92cm to the fork of his tail and was caught on a chartreuse pepperneon minnow.
We went fishing the evening again. Got lots of small bites but really struggled to connect to them. Kromstok managed to hook one. I think it is a Whiting but am not sure. I have this pic if somebody can help me identify it.
