Hi all I recently got a Penn Applause 8000 and also the 3000. now I know you can't compare these with something that costs R6000 but who has any experience with them? They look very good and durable to me.

cheers

Got the 8000. Got some nice snoek throwing small spoon.
Only nice fish on it was a 10kg couta from a jigging spoon. Performed admirably. It is value for money

I had the 3500 and used it once before it broke down, the line also did not wind onto the spool evenly... so i took it back and bought the Daiwa Exceller, far superior reel i recon, and a little bit more expensive!

Mmm D75 that's not what I want to hear...:?

what excactly happened? you weren't pulling a yf with that little reel onto a rig maybe? I have not noticed any uneven winding, maybe some retrieve styles can cause this I don't know.

i thought the 8000 performed quite well and have pulled out a few snoek with it but it's main purpose is to help me hunt some tail. my setup supposedly is sufficient for longfin. i got the 3000 as abackup for an upcoming trip to the zambezi. well, hold thumbs... maybe I should take the 8000 with.

by the way, most reels come in series of 3000, 4000, 10 000 etc - even up to over 20 000. How do these numbers relate to the specs on the reel, or is it based on some intntl standard?

cheers

The braid bunched up on the one side of the spool and it came off in bunches and had to end up cutting up more than 100m of it, and the biggest thing was that something broke on the top nut that controls the drag and this happened while i was pulling a Kob from my ski, i ended up having to handline the fish in. I might have just got a dud, but i have to say that the Exceller is far superior in quality, and i am sure that most of the guys here using the exceller will agree!

By the way, i did not even get a chance to use it on a Yellowfin!

OK, so the anti reverse mechanism on the 8000 stopped working. nice. And that after being used 3 times and properly rinsed in fresh water afterwards. Do I open it to see if its a small problem, or take it back straight away? Man I'm upset - I only removed the rear cover and was shocked to discover it's plastic, although it looks very much like anodised alu or something. Yes, the drag nut is also an all-plastic assembly except for the small nut on the inside.
Not impressed. :swear

Sorry to hear about the reel, at least i now know that it was not just me that got a dud, especially since you had problems with a different size model!
I take it that it is still under warranty? What has the dealer said?

I still have to take it back I got it at tuckers - the small one I got at Sportsmans (mistake anyway because they are almost R100 more expensive than Tuckers)
I have yet to use the small one - i just got it as a backup for my upcoming trip. I won't use it in salt thoug - I was considering christening it with a snoek to see if it would handle a tiger.

Willie - Sorry to hear about the demise of your reel.... It sucks that the cost difference between cr@ppy quality spinning reels, and a decent one that will last and hadle the salt is so great... It pays to spend a little more if you gonna be in the salt!

I would return both of them if you can, and spend an extra coupel hundred bucks for something that will last...

I was in Tuckers a few weeks ago and a guy was there buying his first fishing outfit, ant the guy was trying to sell him some sort of surf rod and a Penn Applause, I speak to the guys there usually about tackle etc etc, and i gave him my opinion of the Applause and he was not very happy, got all defensive saying that they are selling really well and have had no problems....... so much for that now!!

My wifes Applause seized up after one season. Just before seizing, the anti-reverse also went. Didn't expect much from that reel, considering the price. Doesn't seem to like salt water very much!!

The thing about it is that it was not really a cheapie!! Could have prob bought a cheaper reel that will operate much better!

I've got some daiwa graphite spinning reel that I bought in 1990 or somewhere, that still works. Although it has not been used in the salt much maybe twice.

D75 don't worry I'll do you guys a nice report back - tha scariest thing about driving about 7000km's is the fuel price.

Well, I was a bit confused when I could not find tha Applause on pennreels.com under their products section.

This is because the Penn Applause is NOT A GENUINE PENN REEL!!! Apparently Jarvis Walker has a license to market products with a PENN label - even though it's not the real thing. I don't think that's cool at all - after all I got ths reel cuz I'm familiar with the PENN brandname - what are the chances you'll get a legal copy?

Is it not the shops responsibility to at least tell you, look this is not the PENN you think it is?

This explains it all...... i have lost a bit of faith in Penn Reels after my experience with the applause!

I have always trusted PENN and at one stage i nearly bought the applause because i thought.." WOW if Penn makes it it must be good"

....glad i didnt....

i have no faith in jarvis walker...sorry to those who dont agree i just dont have many nice things to say about them as a brand

funny how PENN would let jarvis walker do that?
