PE guys..help needed!!

There is currently 4 Raggies and one Massive cob in distress floating on surface for oxygen. Anyone in the area know how some assistance can be given to take them out to sea....LONG shot but maybe the researchers can assist.

Was gister op see en die reuk is plek plek ondraaglik!

Maak my :fbash as mens nie kan vis nie, hoop maar die naweek se Oos voorspelling met groot Wes vroeg in volgende week sal die gemors opbreek.

Yip...Its really sad.

Currently shoals of big leeries are beaching themselves, mussel cracker, sharks, cob, shad everywhere, rocks are full up. Its very sad to see. I think the entire population of fish inside the port is going to be wiped out. Also Coega being a nature reserve and green harbour have done NOTHING to clear up the masses of dead fish!

This is a catastrophic event and the impact is going to be massive.

Wonder what the scientists have to say about this.

The best thing for a nature reserve to do is to let the natural phenomenen run its course without human interference.

There is already human interference in the form of the harbour that was built and has trapped these fish. For this reason it may be important for humans to interfere further and try and get these fish out.

What makes it sad is that there are huge amounts of environmental laws and rules and and and here in the port. Would they not consider this environmental issues. I think they dont know what to do and dont have the resources which is poor considering the amount of money that was spent in building this port and all the "contingencies" they have. To stand and watch a shoal of about 30-40 large leeries swimming to get to the beach is sad.....1 x rubber duck with water and you could save some of the fish.....the raggies are swimming circles with their heads out of the water........they still alive and kicking(the survivors that is). human interference can save lives. when the whales decide to beach themselves and the public go in to pull them back into the water...should they rather just leave them there to die....(and in kommetjie when this happened some of the whales were SAVED and swam back to sea)..????????????????

Last note, Spring tides now so hopefully with the pushing tide some fresh oxygenated water can enter and allow some fish to make their way to sea and deeper water.

Not many pics, got some this morning of the raggies trying to breath on the surface. However not many of them made it.
Took a walk to the slipway and the fish were just scattered everywhere on the rocks. Some nice size cracker too. Alot of leeries didnt make it either, sad as they really are class size breeding stock fish. Alot of the leeries are scattered across the rocks and beach, with the spring tide now, they are starting to wash up further up. I must say there is a band of clear water that is coming in with the tide...I hope they find their way into this. Problem is the spring low, the water level is too low,red tide basically from surface to bottom. They shouldve collected them, and donated to underprivilaged villages. I will try to load the pics of the raggies soon. I think when the tide drops agin the reality of the situation will be clear. Ill take photos then if I can.

Counted approx. 40 -50 big leeries, 2 x raggies, 1 x blackfin, 1 x raggie swimming on surface gasping this morning. Destruction, but what can one do.

I was thinking out of the box again.

The Red Tide is a natural occurence along the Cape coast occuring during the warmer months. Upwelling of the harmful phytoplankton occurs and creates a deadly force of nature that kills. So heres my thought. Our scientists know of this phenomenon, but I am not sure if they are able to place a prediction on where and when its going to happen, well when mabe? because its related to specific wind direction etc. If we know it occurs in the warmer months and which parts of the coast they are most likely to occur then is it not possible to develop a plan of action to save at least some of the fish caught in its deadly web. My plan would be to develop huge holding tanks that can be transported to the area concerned and fill them with water pumped from the unaffected area , which is litteraly right next to the affected area. Any fish or creature that is in distress that can be caught revived and transported to a safer stretch deserves that chance. As said in a previous post , the extremes that we go to to save a Dolphin or Whale why cant our conservationists look at finding a solution to minimise the losses. I am sure a device can be developed to capture a Big Shark and relocate it out of the danger zone. It has to be something that can be attached aroung the Shark in such a way that it ensures water is passing over the gills.

Hey just thinking aloud before I have another brandy.

I have to agree. I am also aware its a natural occurrence, in this case the red tide has been in this port for some time now. The fish die off was huge!

What irritates me, is that this is a billion rand plus port, which has services coming out their ears but they cant even assist in any way possible. They have evironmental companies which they have contracted for the Port, I mean how can they not have something in place. but to be fair in a sense, I hope they have learnt from this and try have something in place. Theres fish floating everywhere, I have not seen a single boat to collect fish out of the harbour and dispatch of accordingly. It will start stinking very soon and very badly.

the only animals benefitting are the Gulls, they are so dik they can hardly walk!...LOL
