Paaltjies, Namibia

Very interesting about the Geelbek explosion at the moment. A mate of mine caught a 5kg Geelbek at Blouberg two weeks ago at 11pm in the evening, the same day that I landed a 60cm Elf and numerous kob at the same spot.

The warm water 18 - 20 deg C that was prevalent at the time obviously had a lot to do with it. Last night I went down to the Melkbos slip for a few hours. Not a touch. Water was back down to 13 deg C. Looks like the wave is over for the time being.

What is the water temp in Namibia at the moment?

Hi Smuts. I was fishing R&S. I hope you don't take offence but due to the limited opportunities and 'staanplek' at this particular spot, I am reluctant to share the exact whereabouts. The members who know the spot well will have my balls for garters if I should splab it out on open forum, but all I can say is we had a two week spell of excellent fishing for edibles. Conditions have completely changed now though. At the time the spot was nice and open with a good slope to the beach and plenty of good colour about with temperature ranging between 17 and 20 deg C. It's gone flat now, and the water is clear and cold. This is an extremely temperamental spot and we may have to wait another year for similar conditions to appear, which is in a way is its saving grace. Most people lose faith after their first blank or two, but I've now given you a clue what to look out for. ;)

Regards
Chris

Thanks boet. Pretty much the same temp that we were experiencing here along in the Cape along the West coast at the time of the Geelbek visitations.

It's been some time since I last fished in Nam.  U being a tour guide what spots North of Henties do you rate at the moment. Do you take tours to Terrace as well. I am planning if all goes well middle March  to be in Henties with a couple of Buddies that need to be shown the ropes. If I remember correctly there use to be two fellows, I think there names were Wolfie and a Loubscher chap doing tours, Do they still operate?

Chris, i was out in the vlei a couple of weeks ago and got into a hell of a school of Geelbek, as quick as i could put my line in, there were also quite a few kob between, i fished from about 8 until just before lunch time, i caught about 40 geelbek and close to 20 kob, managed to tag and release 5 geelbek and 7 kob in the process, apart from keeping my bag limit i released all the fish, of these geelbek about 10 were size and the biggest was 70 odd cm, biggest kob was 75cm. The following day i went back there and caught 7 size Kob, about 15 undersize fish and one niceish elf on chokka, and only one size geelbek. Went back there a week later and only managed 2 undersize kob! Have not been back since then as i have had to head back to work.... i will def be back there in a few weeks time!

Good catches and well done!

At which part of Paaltjies (1-4) are you making these catches and are number one any good or do you need to go further south with 4x4?

Happy hunting!
