Herewith pic of bearing from a trailer that has had my product on for about three years.

As you can see, hardly an wear. They were cleaned , repacked and refitted

Trailer has done about 30000 Km , sliwpay launches , all over South Africa.

So as you can see , bearing protectors work

Regards

Rob

morning all. just some feedback and advice to you from things i have seen over the last few weeks.

folks i cannot stress how important the seal is. any damage to the seal and you have water into the hub.

when replacing bearings the journal has to be inspected for any form of damage that could affect the seal. if a shop is doing it for you make sur you ask then to check it and give you written confirmation that it is ok.

another area of concern is once you had a colaps , 99% of the time the journal WILL be damaged. if you dnt fix it the seal will get buggered and you WILL(not maybe , you will) have a colpase very shortly after luanching your boat in water.

trust the above of use

Make sure your wheel nuts are tight. Broken studs are caused by the nuts working loose. This was a close call - 3 out of 6 broken.

those bearings must be checked and the oil changed.

the heat transfer from the vibration between the rim and the hub is very intense

we had a case where the heat transfer actually boiled the gease in the hud and warped the acetol piston of thje axle mate bearing protector.

we did not check and ended up with a cracked rim and then later a total bearing failure, just cause we tightened the nuts and carried on. yet all the signs showed there was k*k comming

lesson learned....we built a lot of character on that trip. 12 hrs dbn ponto.....not funny

GDTU all

Just a heads up on what I have noticed over the past few weeks , after doing follow ups on clients that have fitted Axle Mate through boat shops

Most had lateral play on the wheels and on inspection i had foud that the washer(between castle nut and bearing) , was not there. IE the bearing was being placed under direct load and wear and tear by the nut.

THIS IS A MAJOR NO NO , the washer has to be there.

I did bring it to the relevant shops attention

At another dealer I went and replaced a broken circlip on an AXLE mate that was about three years old(ex Mozam)

I was shown the old bearings and they were VERY badly rusted , but still running. I was kinda given the third degree as "surely the AXLE MATES should prevent this"

I asked to have a look at the AXLE's journals. The hubs were already in place with new bearings and seals fitted. I was given long stories why they did not want to , but, i insisted.

To say that the journals were F**ked is understatement. The boat was going back to mozam , and i would have been surprised if those new seals would have lasted to Umhlanga from DBN

They ended up replacing the axle.

The fact that the boats owner had the ability to grease the bearings, en route with a grease gun , via the AXLE MATE grease nipples and spring loaded piston , got  him to DBN. If that ability was not there he would have had colapsed wheel bearings before he left Mozam

Trust the above of assistance

the challange with oil filled axle is that when they leak , you loose all the oil and thus all your lubrication to the bearing. if this happens whilst driving , you wont know about it until you hear it and by that time it is to late.
also having an oil filled axle does not help if the chaps who replace the bearings did a substandard job.

with grease . if the seal is damage, it stays attached to the bearing and if you have a bearing protector you can add grease at any time.
