Hi docside. While I totally agree with your first statement, the second is not entirely true. Quoting from Heemstra's Costal Fishes of Southern Africa (2004), although not directly related to elf/shad the commercial catch versus recreational catch is what surprised me.Did we stop and think why these guys are so desperate? Many of them are unemployed, hungry, down and out. I am not condoning their behaviour, but maybe the Parks Board can give them a special permit, just like they have here on the north coast for our 'indigenous' brothers to harvest the rocks legally.
Better than theft and begging imo.
One pull of the trawlers net probably gets more than what these guys can pull in a year? Yet the parks board hounds the 'leisure' fisherman, while there are guys there really damaging our stocks. I'm not saying that have a free for all, but they should accomodate people who have been fishing for generations, and rely on the fish to survive.
Just my 2c.
Took the words out of my mouth. The okes get excited about shad the way we do about rugby. I understand when guys go nuts when they get burnt off by a dude that fishes maybe once a year. I only had one experience. I was on a small rock in the surf, next thing this dude is there, not enough space for two and one of us was going to swim.i would give you a good reason- history of shad fishing comes from our forefathers who used bamboo sticks as rods and strings for lines. many were very poor.shad fishing was one of the easiest ways to provide food . most of our forefathers never took home more than three as the fish was big and many never had cars and fridges. presently many are umemployed and it is the the easiest way to provide food relative to its size.whenever i notice barbaric behaviour ,i simply move off as i feel that i fish merely for the sport whilst others need to feed their families

hi guys, i absolutely agree with DOCSIDE. i would however like to add something to the discussion.
when there's a shad run in struisbaai..........the locals there, mostly white & coloured, slaughter the fish. not an indian in sight. so, i think its across the board. lets educate and not criticize. if i'm not mistaken, this was supposed to be a lighthearted topic.:blah

Mo!!! you asked for it!!eish.... geting abit hot here hy.
the reason i added this topic is to find out why us indians... genaralising here prefer to fish for shad than other fish.
sounds weird i know.
iv seen plenty non indians fishing for shad wetha on fly or dropshot or normal bait catching more than the bag limit and undersize as well.
but what fasinates me is in kzn... indian fisherman fishing for shad. im in dian and i dont have that so called love for fishing shad.
and the most famous thing... it was so :fst:
and all tat subsistance fishing thing is bull. i kno plenty guys i meet that are not poor. they catch it coz they want to... love for the sport or tasty fish.
all confused now i guess....![]()
Khan,
It is not all about racism it has to do with ethnic differences! There will always be that difference between us and not just here in S.A. You will find it all over the world. We need to learn to accept these differences.
@ killy: If you are offended by me calling them Chaar-O's, I appologise! I have to ask the question though. Why are you offended? Indians often refer to Indians as Chaar-O's.
@Habib: They were Indians! The thread title is "shad and INDIANS"! But I am asuming you were generalising!
Now about calling the parks board. I have called them many times and never had a respose from them. Added to that these guys were 2 miles off shore!
Happy fishing!
