i have no problem when a known person calls me that because i then understand his tone , character and context, and personality but if a stranger address me as a charou or coolie he is most likely going to be used as bait.

Oxford dictionary
South African English third edition 1987

chaar ou A slang term for Indian but not derogatry, often jocular.
Slang Afrikaans ou person + chaar of uncertain etymology possibly Hindi chaar admi people in general, representatives of a comunity... less likely possibilities ... "achaar" “pickle”, chaar “four” and English char to blacken by burning.

R. Mesthrie Lexicon of S.A. Indian English 1986.

The only reason I post this is just to show that being called a chaar ou if you are an Indian is not intended to be derogatory. Just like wit ou, soutie, bruin ou. It is just slang! I am also posting this because I think there are too many guys who don’t understand or know the origins of these slang terms and immediately assume it to racist when it is not intended to be.

I got quite a few indian mates and have had indian mates my entire life having grown up in KZN.

From what I understand they do not take offence being called a charou - being called a coolie is not on though - that is disrespectfull!

???

I call them charous (and all) all the time - but they are my mates and call me soutie, rooinek, wit ou and others I would not mention as this is a public forum!

:lol:1

similiar definition applies with a kaffir ---  black african tribe  .so if you feel free to use these terms chaarou and kaffir, then you do so at your own peril, because everyone has got different levels of sensitivities .this is not a joke.

Don't suck **** out of your ****! It is not the same thing! You making yourself sound stupid!

The word kaffir, sometimes spelt ****** or kafir, is an offensive term for a black person, most common in South Africa and other African countries. Generally considered a racial or ethnic slur in modern usage, it was previously a neutral term for black southern African people.
The original meaning of the word was 'heathen', 'unbeliever' or 'infidel', from the Arabic 'kafir'.[1][/suP] Portuguese explorers used the term generally to describe tribes they encountered in southern Africa, probably having misunderstood its etymology from Muslim traders along the coast. European colonists subsequently continued its use.[2][/suP] Although it was in wide use between the 16th and 19th centuries, and not generally seen as an offensive term, as racial tensions increased in 20th century South Africa and the surrounding countries, it became a term of abuse.
The word was used in English, Dutch and, later, Afrikaans, from the 16th century to the early 20th century as a general term for several different peoples of southern Africa. In Portuguese the equivalent cafre was used.
In South Africa today, the term is used both as an insult, and by some, as a common word for a black person. In any case, the term is regarded by most as highly offensive (in a similar way to "nigger" in other countries). Use of the word has been actionable in South African courts since at least 1976 under the offence of crimen injuria: "the unlawful, intentional and serious violation of the dignity of another".[3][/suP]

hey guys, this suppose to be a angling forum.

what say we all stop talking crap and more about fishing!

Shad is caught by people of all colour! Black, white, brown, yellow, pink even the smurfs catch them!

People love catching this fish because its a sure thing, they bite on anything! I myself have never fished in a shad run but watched people go crazy over the years and it looks really fun!

SO TO ANSWER THE INDIAN GENTS QUESTION ABOUT SHAD AND INDIANS..... don't associate a species to a race but you probably not as informed as others to ask a question like that. You need to chat to a retired angler from very early days (pref white) and he will tell you that monster shad was caught by people of all race (stocks were good back then). You see more indians now because they have been given the freedom to fish, back in the day there were mostly "white only" beaches. If you do some research, you will find b/w pictures of young white men, formally dressed, angling in bunches. The pics will be dated so you can decide what species they were after.

Whites have slowly moved away from the onshore shad run to the off-shore run therefore they seem to be an indian majority on the coastlines. Just because you can't see other races bagging shad it does not mean they not doing it! You should of asked your father, uncle, grandfather before posting a question which totally blew up. I am sure you would of got the same answer as mine!

the best advice i could give you today is
STOP WATCHING TOO MUCH ESA!!!! they will confuse you!
Do you think that the fat dude got so fat by releasing all his fish! :)

cheers guys!
