the main factor will ALWAYS be the exchange rate unfortunately...something we have to live with and the fact that we can't exactly tell wen the rand is goin to plummet doesnt help either

the problem i have is that i hardly see prices goin down wen the exchange rate stabilises again...i can't explain that, doubt many people can. its like the petrol price and how long its taken to drop after the oil price finally fell...theres a long lag period and sumone must be makin a pretty penny...and its not the retailers

i work at basil manning in durbs and i can tell you first hand every freakin time we re-order the prices have gone up...and often not by R2 or some change, usually the increases are significant. Rapala increased their prices by 25% across the board a while back!Shimano are going to increase their prices by a similar margin SOON!
Daiichi's are going to cost up to 60% more...and we bring em in as 'our' product (wholesale and retail).

i promise you the last thing a guy like barry wareham wants to do is rip a customer off, he gets as bleak as any of you!

and then there's the issue of raising prices of old stock to come in line with the new prices. It's something that has to be done..it's not like we'r taking advantage of anything. some of the suppliers insist on a standardised price across the board, if we keep undercutting other stores we risk getting told to find our stock from someone else.

tight lines guys
Don't know Barry, I know he has to make a living though, nobody works or goes into business because it's fun, we all do it to make money. Some just choose NOT TO RIP PEOPLE OFF (because they can). I'm not saying that Barry does this hey. But it's a fact that ALOT of fishing tackle dealers do it. Terminal tackle is a PERFECT EXAMPLE.

About the agents telling YOU what to charge ... IT IS CALLED PRICE FIXING. Do you wanne report them or shall I ... ?

NOBODY and I really mean NOBODY can tell you what to charge for something, except if it's gazetted (it's law then, like petrol).

I deal in Quicksilver Marine Oil and Diving equipment. I also use to deal in High End Airrifles (the 6000-20000 stuff).

The suppliers give me a recommended retail price, it's my choice if I want to charge less or if I want to charge more. Should one of them DARE to tell me I can't buy from them because I cut out the competition (because I charge less the the RRP) we WILL GO TO COURT and they WILL BE INVESTIGATED FOR PRICE FIXING. Have you seen the fines you get for PRICE FIXING ? Not funny. Go read the contract your company signed with your suppliers, what is their terms for cancelling an agreement ? I'm pretty sure that selling something below RRP isn't in there.

I advertised equipment on the internet, at a MUCH LOWER price than the RRP (recommended markup was 30%, I advertised with a 15% markup), supplier phoned me and said the other dealers are threatening ... I just asked one question, is it a RRP or is it a fixed price. That is where the conversation stopped. The next day I phoned the importer and explained to them about Price Fixing, they were  very aware of it and said they can't force me, I then further explained that I was running a special (which any and every business does every now and then), this made them very happy, then I explained to them that I will run that special everyday for as long as my business is open.

Hell I got phonecalls from other companies (that compete against me), and some of them made some serious threats. Lets just say that I did some more aggresive advertising, they now even sell less and they don't phone me anymore either.

This is exactly what business is all about, you COMPETE for your fair share of the market. I will rather sell 200L of oil a month at a 15% markup than 10L at a 30% markup. In the end YOU MAKE MORE MONEY.

As for raising prices of old stock, most companies do it, but I don't believe in doing it. A company should decide on a percentage markup and stick to it, older stock is older stock, you paid less for it, why suddenly change the price because the "new" stock is 30% more expensive. You know what, customers pick up on that, and in the long run you lose business when you do business like that.

I make a point of checking for the price adjustments in shops, if I see they do it I walk out, won't do business with them. I personally feel that they are ripping me off.

To end it off, I know the prices of ANYTHING and EVERYTHING imported into South Africa is going up, and it will get worse, I just don't believe in jumping on that Gravy Train for a free ride.

BUT THAT'S JUST ME ...

Good on you Neil! South Africans are far too gullible and part with their cash far too easily. Having dealt with foreigners a lot recently has made this quite obvious. The reason why prices are cheaper in the States is because they don't buy unless the price is right. Bjorn - no offense - but BS! Who else is winning other than the retailer if they don't bring their prices down when costs decrease? NeilG has already cleared up marking up of old stock too. I have boycotted at least 2 stores for doing this before. No, it's not something you have to do.

Re: jigheads. Guys, go and buy from Do-It molds and order from Cabelas and the likes until SA retailers stop bending you over. I have never had any issues with ordering online from any of them. Rapalas and Yozuris are selling for R45 a piece here in Dubai. Fireline is half the cost of SA and sometimes the shops have specials at even less! FFS Don't tell me that retailers in SA can't do better than they're doing now.

Hi Neil,

Can't quite understand what your problem is, raising the prices on old stock is done so that if some one like you, walks into a dealer and sees the price of the old stock and wants the new stock at the old price as well.

RRP is there to stop the retailers from fighting about prices and more or less to set a standard. IT'S NOT PRICE FIXING.

Dingleberry,

That's right, go and buy your gear from the overseas guy's....krok
What buckup service and parts are you going to get in SA for those products that you've now GREY IMPORTED.

Think a little before you post, Please

All I'm saying is sell "old stock" at old prices, sell new stock at new prices, if the same item has 2 different prices because one is old stock and the other newer stock the people normally buy the old one first, that way the old stock moves. FIFO

I know RRP is not price fixing, but you will agree with me that some dealers get very very upset if another dealer sells below that price.

What is so WRONG with that ? (grey importing)

You make it sound like stealing from someone, or doing something thats either illegal or morally wrong.

It isn't, any person has the right to choose from who and from where they want to buy from.

I understand that it affects "your business", but it is the person (with the cash in their pockets) choice where they wanne buy. If you can get it from somewhere else at 2/3 the price it's understandable that people go for it. To that person it's about the best possible price.

The "middle man" serves very little purpose (most of the times), and in most cases just makes something that's already expensive 30% more expensive !

Overseas companies that don't have "middle men" makes much more money than companies that have to deal with a middle man. They can put on a higher markup and still charge less than companies that have to go through the middle man and his additional markup.

Come on Van. What service or backup am I exactly going to get on products like hooks,  rapalas and most terminal tackle? If I take a hook that has been straightened to a shop, are they going to recatch the fish for me? The chances are that they wont even replace the hook.

On products sutch as reels, the guarantees are international. If you refuse to honour the guarantee, you will loose your agency. I will definately buy the same product elsewhere if I can get sutch huge discounts.

People in SA have to realise that it's a global market. Times have changed.

Hi niel,

You are right, if you buy these products, you are stealing.
The agents own the TRADING RIGHTS for there products in SA and the unautherised sales are not supposed to happen and are illigel, and if you are caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, in the right circumstances you will go to jail and that wont be the first time it's happend ether. If you think that the retailer needs to make a profit to keep his doors open to the public that he is doing a service for and that if you are buying these goods you helping make him poor as well as closing them down there will be no more tackle shop left open.

Don't take the food out of the mouthes those who deserve it and who do all the hard work for it.

well that's news to me...
is there such a law in SA ?
if there is it basically means that buying from a overseas dealer is illegal ...

Any examples you can give us ?

If you're a tackle dealer I would understand this, but as a man off the street, to import via Cabelas etc, pay duties and tax is legal.

If you buy a hook, that same hook came from a supplier who does sell guaranteed stock like rods and reels and if a product is deemed parrelell or grey imports the agent has all the rights in the world to decline the guarantee or service.

like you said to LJ, HiFi Corp is all about grey imports and no one stops them, thats fine, if you buy a sony from them take it to sony and see if they will help if it breaks.

Actually they dont under normal circumstances. How are they gonna prove that I did not buy the product while I was fishing in America a few months ago? My invoice will actually prove my case. If what you suggest was true, the motorcycle market would not be flooded by grey imports. Yes the local Dealer gives us problems with guarantees. No problem, the overseas dealer honours the guarantee anyway. Parts arrive faster than if you ordered them locally.

Hi Carcharias,

If some one brings me a reel to service and repair, and the reel is one that we have not imported, I will send it straight back to where it came from, Because we know our products better than any one else and we choose what models that we want to import and besides the range we import there are serial numbers and batch numbers on every thing.

So you telling me that if a visitor from another country brings you a reel to repair, you gonna refuse?
No wonder we cannot compete on the global market. The importers are stuck in the dark ages.

Due to my good nature I would probably end up helping such a person anyway.

The issue that we are losing focus on here is about, unauthorized people bringing gear into SA and illegally selling it commercially, you can in a personal capacity import what ever you want and no one can stop you, but you may not sell it for a living    :fishn
