If you are a serious big carp angler, fishing the European style of carp angling (100% committed to catch and release of big carp), and you would like to meet up with like-minded anglers in KZN, then drop me a mail. Just give me a brief description of your fishing career, the sizes of fish you've caught, preferred venues etc.

We have fished a number of dams in KZN, with plenty biggies caught (like the one below from a "private" kzn dam), and we are looking for a few decent guys to come with us on some of our trips.

Congrats - that looks like a mighty fine fish.

Now what if I were from KZN  and was clueless and wanted to get into Specimen from your post above it looks like you require a cv and an interview before allowing somebody to go out with you - by educating and involving new commers do you not promote conservation and ethics that are associated with the sport.

Picture would look much better if there was a face on the person - we won't hold it against you..........LOL

I would defenitely be interrested, as my carp tackle is gathering dust, but I am afraid I do not have the High Tech(cost) specimen carp equipment that it seems is needed for joining you guys. :(

Ryan and Critter, unfortunately this is how things are in SA when it comes to big carp fishing. Too many guys pretending to be good ethical carp anglers, and then you find out afterwards that they are using your methods to catch and kill the very fish we are trying to protect. We have enough problems with pollution, papgooiers, bowfishermen, etc killing off our target species as it is. Similar attitude to old "skrops" here... That is why we are careful.
I mean lets be honest, if you really want to eat fish, rather eat sea fish. It tastes better and is very healthy.

So its not that you need to have a Cv etc, hehehe... but I'm sure there's nothing wrong with telling me more about yourself, etc? For example, where in KZN do you live, so one can choose venues close enough to everyone...

We are looking at planning a session at one of the dams in Kzn soon, where ppl like yourselves (Ryan and Critter) can come and have a chat, and put some lines in the water. So as you were saying Ryan, "educating and involving newcomers".

Critter, when starting off you do not need all the high tech equipment. It took me some time to build up my gear, as I am not loaded with cash, hehehe... I started off with 2 x 12ft fibreglass rods, with cheapie baitrunner reels...

But if I look at some of the kit that bass anglers carry, I think they are way more high tech than us. Especially counting their massively expensive bass boats, eish!

Ryan, I see you are from Pretoria. I know that Outdoorpages will be hosting a "specimen carp fishing open day" at Rushmere, Johannesburg soon. I might also be there. So make a plan.

UHM that "Crap magazine - "Tight lines" well I write for them on a regular basis at least 5 big articles a year. I agree that not everything they publish is what most of us want to see but they do struggle for editorial information. I write for them as I am trying to make the difference - as they say small changes make a big one with time. Instead of slating them what can you do to make the difference? It is very easy to point fingers but it is the same with crime in South Africa - what are you as an individual doing to make the difference?

Anyways we can sling mud all day long here it is not going to help - I am trying to do my part to make the change.

I think with your reference to Skrops - you should be trying to educate him more than Critter (Ecologist) and myself. (I hasten to add that I am a conservationist too - and although I Like catching carp they fall in the same bracket as bass for me -but let us not go there -cause it is just going to get messy)

As for attending speciemen things - time is the only consideration at this point in time. I have expressed interest in Specimen but I am at heart an artlure guy. I would like to attend but I would prefer to go out on a proper session with somebody. Specimen much like Artlure is taking the sport of angling to the next level and after all we do it cause we love it.

Ryan, my apologies then in part... unfortunately I have seen too many bad things in that mag. Things that go against my ethics when it comes to fishing, specifically with regards to carp fishing. So I am not critisizing the other types of fishing shown in that mag.... I've also written to the editor more than once about my concerns, and this was wiped off the table in the replies I got back. So I did try from my side to make a difference by writing to them, but ya, so much for that.

About crime, well I have been assisting the SAPS for a long time via my company, mapping crime in their areas, mapping crime at a national level for the CIAC(Crime Intelligence) of the SAPS, that they use in their planning and strategic meetings, and also to identify crime trends etc. Recently I was in a meeting with the head of the Gauteng Dept. Community Safety where I presented crime figures and the identification of hotspots. So I think I am doing my bit to help, dont you?

About educating ppl, I am willing to educate those that are willing to learn. if scrops wants to, I will share with him...

The issue about carp and bass, well, maybe this is why I am so touchy when it comes to carp fishing... its an ugly fight, and we as big carp anglers are fighting it alone. Funny how carp, bass, and other species have been co-existing in the same dams/rivers for centuries, but all of a sudden they must be eradicated....??? Why not just manage dams properly? anyway, i'm also not going into it any further.

If I came accross wrongly here or anywhere else, my apologies then. I will then go back to "the other forum". Enjoy. ;)

I am glad to hear you are trying to ,make the difference with crime - you will be glad to know that both Skrops and myself are also trying to make the difference - so he is not such a bad oke after all.

Instead of writing to the "Tight Lines" why don't you write for them?

There has been much written on the subject of Carp and eradication on Sealine. There is no way that we will ever be able to rid our waters of them. And you will see if you peruse these threads that no-one talks about eradication - just controlled management and basically stop them from infesting other waters where they donot occur - again I reiterate - facts - know who you are dealin with. We have guys here from DEAT who wrote those laws and I don't think it will take long for that sealiner to find the thread.

Again I say don't run away - we are not chasing you - I reiterate again we need blokes like yourself here.......:fbash

LOL............Ryan, where is your pic, put it on for a good laugh.

bigcarpio, apology accepted, positive attitude are much more appreciated than negativity, ask Ryan he has even reprimanded me before, you are more than welcome on sealine, like Ryan and myself had said we need freshies here, I myself is a saltwater man, but do throw a line into freshwater from time to time.

BC, I almost blew a casket when I read your replies, but I appreciate the fact that you changed your approach. Ryan, I appreciate you coming up for us, I guess that the light-hearted feel of sealine may not suit all people, but it is what keeps me coming back to such an extend that I sometimes have to stay later to get finished with my work (Like may well be the case today).

BC like Ryan said, I am a fairly well qualified ecologist and zoologist with a fair bit of background on especially freshwater ecology, and I am actually involved with the monitoring of the "food-web manipulation research" that is going on. I grew up next to the Vaal River, and fished competitively as a junior for a couple of years while at school. That said, I am a proud "pappie" that enjoy my carp fishing, and that probably treat small and medium carps intended for release with the same respect as you treat "specimen size" carp. My pb carp was 15kg, taken at 03:00 in the middle of winter from the vaal river....applying specimen tactics (that was before specimen carp angling hit SA like it have now, and my tactics came from experience and long ours next to the water). This fish, as well as a 9kg fish was released without being photographed, as I was alone next to the water. 

So yes, I am really interested in fishing for big carp and in their conservation, but I like to do it my way. I have been living in kzn for less that a year, so I could really gain a lot from the experience of local dams that you have, and I am sure that there are more people around here that could also gain from your wisdom. That is if you are willing to share it with us.

I do feel that no matter how or where you share your info, some people will bastardize it and misuse it, but then again, no sport or conservation effort can succeed or grow if you you are not willing to share the necessary information. As have been said a lot, Sealine is a great portal for sharing all kinds of information, and most of us do it out of the love of angling and of being out there in nature. I can promise you that 99% of the guys on this forum is conservation minded, and serious about their fishing. That said, we enjoy poking fun and being light hearted on the forum, so you will have to be able to live with that to survive on Sealine!

So, give us a shot...you may be pleasantly surprised!
