Its all good slandering guys like myself that although im starting with specimen since bout 6 months ago an BOUGHT end tackle pre made , due to the fact that all of the guys with exception to 1 in CT was prepared to help , although I use a knotless landing net , unhooking mat and only 1 hook even during papgooi comps .

My particles is rather soaked longer than required and cooked longer as well than risking injury or death to fish .

Are you aware of how difficult it is to try and make end tackle setups from descriptions and pictures the best way to learn with anything in live is to see how its done and practise with a person that has the know how

Vleipadda,

I'm not so sure what you mean by "slandering guys like me". The only "slandering" if you want to call it that is towards anglers who want to subscribe to specimen angling only for cathing big fish, but not for preserving the place where they fish at. That hardly means you or any other angler still learning the ropes of specimen angling. We are not talking here about (honest) mistakes made: we are talking about people purposely doing things which are inappropriate, and when help/advice is offered by another angler, they are unwilling to learn. That is definitely NOT you...

I'm in CT now, but haven't had time to fish yet. I'll probably only get to the water by end of Jan. I wanted to do a session at Rondevlei, and you are welcome to join me then. Stefan also invited you to join him, and after meeting him last week, I think that he is a good person to learn from. Also, did you get Jonathan's (Jarrt) email to specimen anglers in CT? If not, send him a PM and he will contact you. Through networking it will be a short period before you are regularly fishing with others, and both you and the other angler learning from each other.

Vleipadda Dude

Please dont take offence, I was mearly making a point? I also started out buying leadcore ready spliced, downloading many different pages on how to tie different rigs and i have no problem 99.9% of the guys here on Sealine are here to learn and share ideas and give advice...

I was not critisising anyone here on the forum. I was talking about the guys who read the mags buy the gear and hunt big fish at any costs....

The last thing i wanted to do is offend you or anybody else. If i have then i apologise... That was not the intension.....

Snytjie youre quite right Stefan was the only person prepared to help , and already has been of enormous assistance , I appreciate the offer and accept the offer for accompaning you .

I was just making a statement as well Ive approached speciman anglers at venues and was turned down very rudely when asking , after a while it makes you feel despondant . There is however exception to the rule as ive once again seen .

Personally ive caught 20lb carp on conventional style my main reason is to ensure the fish goes back safely for the future generation , thats why i will rather invest more time and money on Specimen style

Was reading an interesting article in Crafty (Dec issue), where Ali Hamidi was targeting specific fish in a small venue... his approach was to bait his swim without any lines in the water, the idea being that the line pressure from the other anglers would drive fish to his swim where they could feed at ease... at night fall lines went in, and he managed to land one of the fish he was after...

With the discussion around 4 rods etc. and small venue... makes one think... definately something to consider...

"Ive approached speciman anglers at venues and was turned down very rudely when asking" - That is unacceptable in my opinion, and these type of anglers create a false and wrong picture of good and helpfull anglers! The ironic thing is that you'll find those same ignorant stubborn anglers complaining about newcomers, yet they do buggerall to be, as BassPro pointed out, part of the solution...!!!

back to the point, emmarentia friday afternoon, i arrive i look around, i leave, one guy had 2 pods, four rods per pod, okes fishing left right and all over the place over other people swims and so on it looked more like a bow of spahetti than a lake, if everyone had one two lines we could have all fished and probably most of us would have caught

I understand fully where vlei is comin from. Being new to specimen angling myself i too struggled at first tryin to learn the ropes. Started off with a home made matress for an unhookin mat and a knotless landing net always left a venue clean too. Ive never used ready made rigs instead read tons around specimen from forums etc and tried my hand and makin my own rigs.

I must say its been quite a learning curve especially being a student with no finances. Ended up buying lots of terminal tackle which actually turned out to be quite useless. Still dont use lead core but instead use ESP flexi anchor tubing so i still dont know how to splice leadcore. I have started workin this year and am slowly expanding my tackle lookin to invest in big pitts. The most challengin points now is getting time off to work to fish, getting help/info (esp since im one of the very few indian guys keen in the sport) and thirdly not havin access to a boat or bait boat.

Saving up for a boat but just started tryin my hand at spoddin in the meantime. Still pretty inexperienced wit a spod tho.

Anyways to cut a long story short i fully appreciate the difficulties faced by guys like vleipadda and other guys new to the sport.

Just don't leave your left over bait on the bank ...... If it was my lake I'd ban such anglers !!!

I hope that specimen angling is about conservation of both the species as well as the habitat/angling water. This does not only mean the environmental side, but also the symbiotic side. Everybody knows about Wemmerpan and the banning of angling there, mostly driven by the rowing club. Emma has just such a club. You act like this, i.e. an overdose of activity/tackle on a small venue plus littering on the bank, it will not be long before the opportunity to fish there will be taken away...

Hi guys, I am glad I came across this thread. I have not been online for ages but after this weekend i specifically wanted to raise some concerns.

I am a member of the canoe club and spent time on the water everyday this weekend. As far as i know there has not been a call to ban fishing, BUT my observations over the past while and in particular the last weekend is particularly one of etiquette. We paddle on the water 7 days a week and pay a fair membership rate and fishermen are no problem, in fact it breaks the monotony of going in circles for hours on end to see who has caught what, in fact we often point out areas were we have spotted Carp or the last 2 weeke crazy Barbel just below the surface hitting boats etc.

This weekend though on 3 occasions there were anglers casting in front of boats, now if you do that in front of a Surf ski or sprint boat they have underslung rudders and your line will be snagged!!! we only need the top 10cm of water, you are welcome to the rest.

it is not that easy to just stop the boat to reverse or get untangled, they are notoriously unstable and anyone who thinks differently is welcome to visit the club and have a go.
Further to that we had the same gentlemen mentioned (who were filming for a local fishing show) not only cast in front of us bu tshove off in their inflatable in front of us with no apology (if they had i would have told them that there are really large carp about 20m more West of where they were dropping their bait, we see them every day we paddle :fswim )and if you ask most paddlers would be able to point out the areas of activity..

The above is all in a days work and we all want to train in peace so I have observed very few nasty incidents and everyone generally finds space to do whatever they need to on our small puddle.

The real aftermath is to be seen on a monday morning when at sunrise we arrive to train. you then see fairly sizeable carp and Barbel that are dead and washed to the wall where we walk through to collect our boats from the racks. Further to that is the considerable amount of litter in the form of beer bottles and packets. Few boats leave the water without having collected some rubbish to try keep the waterway clean.

Maybe a suggestion would be to add an insert to the show on ettiquette????

I simple one to remember is right of way of craft. Powered craft give way to all, sailboats give way to paddle power and I suppose with the distance swimmers frequenting the dam lately all would give way to them.

I have not seen any of the sinker throwing at boats that was happening at Wemmer pan so I believe if all are considerate the PUBLIC waterway can stay just that where I can train in peace and then take my son Kayak fishing for Bass, while the rest of the family enjoys a picnic on the banks. :kaykak:wfish:::S

When I started this thread (my alias now Bankstick) anyway...I wanted to bring the message across about litter / bait issues etc.

I agree with a lot that is said here and especially the fishing privelidge we have at Emma - Nonetheless there are the odd few that totally ignore rules and or do as they please. We try to educate and we get a slammed door shut in our faces. I agree with Dreman - the litter is a problem with people socialising and some anglers leaving their dirt behind - there are too few refuse bins as well.

I know a few guys of the Emma rowing club and to me it's a matter of 'Getting Along' - I have had no issue thus far with rowers tho' some row too close to the bank at times and my line was picked up once-these are learners I think. In that situation keep your cool and just re-cast the line after a chat with the rower. It works for me.

On the topic of helping newcomers to specimen - U guys have Noooooo Idea how lucky U are these days (I accept there are the odd specimen idiot that won't help withy advice) but when I started out I had Carpworld and almost NO HELP too in making bait/rigs etc etc .... I learnt the hard way and then I met guys that showed me the ropes and we fish together ever since.

To close with there are guys on this forum that will help any way they can but there are also the 'So-called Specimen Angler' (Get angry if U want) that gets into the game and suddenly fishes with braid / treks down to a big lake for the elusive 40lb + fish with absolutely either NO EXPERIENCE OR PAPGOOI BACKGROUND .........hey it's how it is. They all want a BFC !!!! but the evil is in the detail and by that I mean learn small then go big...old school yeas but a wealth of knowledge didn't hurt anyone.

Learn anyway U can and don't litter please.

Yip the new guys do tend to stick close to the bank, not nice falling out and having to swim 50m with a boat full of water.

Most of the boats shouldn't snag a line as the nose is fairly smooth and the line should just slip underneath, unless they have damaged it in a river. That said if you don't see a rudder behind it is underneath. Again we only use the top 10cm of water so if your lines are low there should be no issues.

BTW we paddle, Rowers do it backwards lol

Again I offer my time and boats freely should anyone want to give it a try and gain a perspective of the other side

Dreman, perhaps its good that you ressurected this topic again, as it still applies!

My friend and I fished Emarentia many times over the years and we both agree that the paddlers there are friendly and considerate. And we treat them with respect as they are also entitled to use the dam without being harassed.

Bankstick/BP, I agree with what you're saying. To be honest, some anglers are an embarressment to those of us who go out of our way to practice the game with ethics and respect to fellow anglers AND other water users. Its like you say, most guys are ok, but there's a few guys out there that just dont care.

Dreman, its worrying to hear about the dead carp and barbel there... i just wonder how they end up dead, as we take alot of care in making sure they're released alive and well. Could it be wrongly/unprepared bait? Maybe a certain type of angler who dont take care of the catch? ... something like this reflects really badly on anglers, and unfortunately no matter what style of angling you practice, you are seen as part of the problem.

MC tx for the support / I've actually also supported the Emma club on the floating Jetty they have there, a really good idea behind it but of course that was an issue as is with most things these days when consultation takes place and some people are not happy.

Anyway I am thinking of doing a morning session there this Saturday ... I usually get there very early and set-up before the paddlers arrive so there's no 'getting in each other's way' !!!!! :kaykak & ((r(e(ling

I haven't seen any dead fish of late - I'll go out soon on the inflatable and have a look around. It is a concern tho' !!!!
