Hi I was wondering if these kites were being us

In the late sixties a South African gentleman wrote a book on kites and in it he describes a shuttle that he successfully used for kite fishing.  This shuttle was quite ingenious as it operates without any string attached to it as it folds its wings forward at the moment that it hits the stopper and releases the bait where after it would slide, without any wind resistance, back to the fisherman, ready to be primed again.

One Saturday morning (must have been late sixties / early seventies) he had a display at our local shopping centre in Parow down in Cape Town and I can recall that I was fascinated by his kites that he displayed, some so smal that he used nylon from a woman's stocking as string in order to fly it.  He also described at length how he as a kid earned pocket money on a Saturday morning by walking up and down the beach with his kite and shuttle and at a fee would launch bait for the local fisherman down in Durban, where he grew up.

Later years I saw the book once in a library in Windhoek, but unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the book, neither that of the author. Maybe someone out there can help as I presume the book is long out of print.

Brollocks I see you are and I are more or less same year models,it seems that we might have been the last generation to have witnessed kite-fishing in all its ingenuity. The taxi you describe that folds its wing and then slides down the kite line is similar to the one that Sailfish has drawn and described in an earlier post..

I still have one which I rarely use, like I said ,I use a droper-mechanism and if I want to drop more than one bait ,an old 10 inch KP reel brings any kite in without getting a hernia. You were fortunate to have laid eyes on a book on kitefishing,as it is like you say, a subject very rarely written about (black-magic) lol. Most descriptions also sound so complicated that a lot of would be's give it up before gaining significant success. In fact it is quite simple and is a great additional to have for any angler.

I realise that with sliding ,most anglers can now get a huge bait out to amazing distances, however,if the breeze is right and you have the knowledge you can hang out a whole bonny, salmon(kob) or shad and even a smallish shark at a distance of maybe 300-500 meters and work the bottom, mid, and top-water collumn. You also have the ability to move your bait around in the current,or troll it by giving and retrieving line. All in all not a bad set of armoury to have in your arsenal.Vertical jigging also spring to mind, with proper knowledge of a local area one can always attempt this discipline,I for one  cant wait to go and try it.

I sincerely hope this thread is going to revive kitefishing a bit, and like mentioned earlier, will try my utmost to share the knowledge that I have, along with the other forum members who already gave very meaningful inputs.

Think you are talking of Bruce Lauwrie. Also anuther gentalman from Sha Cuda Kite fishing club was Bart Klopper. He use to write articals for the Tight lines and Angling magazines. All on the how to kitefish and bild your own fishing kites.

Sha-cuda hosted an annual kitefishing compo that spanned over nearly a whole week, hudreds of anglers congregated on the beaches of St Lucia in the 1980's to participate and many a raggie and kingie was caught. The old IGI-isurance company used to sponsor it back in the day.We would camp on the beach and hang baits out day and night creating what looked like our own milky-way with all the light-sticks as markers at night(light sticks were deemed a novelty then) and many a balloon/condom/plastic bag with a cheap torch in was deployed as a marker ,hanging out over the sea at night.

Pen 14/0,16/0's and the likes were the flavour of the day,and many a marriage was tested by the true cost of Dacron in those isolation years.

How do you explain to Vali and Kortbroek that they have killed off a tradition in a fowl swoop of a pen.

Hi guys,

I've also been interested in kite fishing for a long time, but never had the opportunity to try it out.
Well, I have taken the plunge and bought the Mullers' Kitefishing Seagull kite with the Bait Ferry and Dyneema braid (0.6mm 60kg).
Got out to Strandfontein side to try it out on Saturday, but the wind was blowing straight onshore. So I moved off to another spot further towards Macassar, with the wind coming across from a Westerly direction...got the kite up into the air, then the wind died down! ::craz
Will have to wait till next week now, as I'm off to JHB tomorrow to collect a bike I bought.
If anyone would like to see some photos of the kite and the bait ferry, I will post some shortly...

Just remember, Mullerskitefishing's designs are patented, so please don't infringe on their copyrights/patents...rather support them and buy one of their kites.
They are very friendly, their service is great and their designs, though simple, are quite genius. They are also very well priced! Building one of these kites yourself, using the same quality of materials, won't cost you much less. That all said, here are a few photos....

The first 2 photos are of the kite, both sides.
The next 2 photos are of the larger bait ferry. You also get a smaller bait ferry with your purchase, to be used in stronger winds...
