Then pull the hook through, but turn it so that the eye of the hook follow as shown. Take care not to break the jaw, wickle it gently through

once the hook is through the top jaw, you can now position it in the body. Dont go to far back as it will affect its swimming

With the hooks point remove one scale where you are going to enter the hooks point. Insert the hook just below the skin and out as far as the normal curve of the hook allows you

Now pull the wire or nylon of your trace so that the hook's curve nudges up against the skin. Now you are ready to cast

Always wet your hands when handeling the Live mullet otherwise the scales come off which will reduce the life of the mullet. Don't take to long and if need be, put it back in the bucket of water as you are getting ready to cast and walking to the waters edge.

The trace depends on the fish & size you are targeting!

Practice casting big baits, as the livie seldom lives after casting it twice.

i think u pinning the bait all wrong....from my experience the live mullet will not die if you cast it out......use a normal ground trace method....and the slide if you targeting garrick...my 2c

There are different ways I know, but my way works and it works well. Got a raggie at the VD Riets League this way & on visiting friends in East London last month my wife got a 160cm diamond on a live mullet Pinned this way!!

I was taught by a great angler a way of casting mullet using a circle hook and it works like a bomb. Can't get more simple. Thread the point in one eye and out the other. This does not damage anything except his eyesight. The maullet lives long and doesn't drown when you reel him in ar from any current. The other advantage is you don't damage the mullet when casting as the skull/head area is really strong so you can put in a decent cast without worrying. We caught kob throw for throw using this method once and it work really well. Try it.

Agree with u Red Eye when you cast close by, but when I do my full cast it tears out.

Boet, we were putting in SOLID full casts and the mullet were fine. It can't tear if it goes through the eyes because the eye socket holds the fish together due to its own strength. Through the lip tears out but haven't had any tear out if through the one eye and out the other. It must be said we use a reasonably thick circle hook and the barb and the shape of the circle hook stops the mullet coming off. We even re-used the mullet if you reeled it in if the bait hadn't been hit, thats how well they survived the cast. The only time they didn't survive was when the elf chomped the back part of the mullet it half.

Yes I have, the latest one was in the 1st week of October '09. I was fishing for a raggie at Gamtoos, when this 78cm Kob picked up the Mullet! it didn't even mind the steel trace.
