redeye, so you literally just use a circle hook and pull the hook carefully through the mullets eye socket?sounds like it should work well!always looking for an easier method to throw a mullet in the surf!

After so many years of drowning mullet trying different methods. Then I went to De Hoop on a tagging trip and one of the regular guys showed me that method. I was worried that there were some vital organs between the eyes but apparently not as you can use the same mullet over and over. Try it and let me know what you think. I am sold.

Great tip Greg! The skull would definitely be the toughest part of the livie and I can see little chance of the the fish slipping off the circle hook due to its shape.

What circles were you using?

We were using VMC 6/0 circles.

Good choice, strong and thin gage for eds - very sharp, I caught a Shad with one, the hook actually penetrated through the very hard part of the top jaw making it impossible for the shad to bite through the nylon on my trace (which was intended for a Kob)

On the plaat you can just hook the mullet behind the head, carefull not to go too deep, because you should not be casting more than 40m.

If you want cob, walk the plaat and look for yellow foam on the water, put a live mullet in there and it won't take long to go VAS!

I use 6/0 Kendall rounds with +/- 15cm Mullet. You can net muller easily on the plaat as well, as long as you are prepared to trap up and down a bit. Don't net in the harbour it's illegal!

Richard mate, get a cast net! Easy as pie to catch them with a net. Nets are around R250 - R300 these days. Just learn and practise to throw it before you set out. It's not that difficult.

i have always cast my live mullet, i find threading it to work well for hook ups but takes a bit of time, therefore i usually just hook it behind the dorsal fin.
The secret is to have a smooth casting action and when reeling in do so as slow as possible, this way you can re-use the mullet.

obviously if you need a big cast , i think red-eyes method would be best.....

my humble opinion...

Does anyone know of the exact technique to throw one of these nets. I really cocked it up badly the last time i had one, i am sure i was doing it wrong...

place the rope over your right wrist, hold the O ring in your left hand allowing the net to hang down, then when the net is untangled take the O ring with your right hand, lift the net at the bottom with your left and place it on your right hand, resting on top, then use your left to flair the net.
imagine that you are trying to throw a big frisbee, almost like a discus thrower and swing the net around, leading with your left hand.....

aftwr reading this i reckon you need to go with someone who knows to actually see it....lol...i will be in Haga in Feb if that helps...
