Hi guys

Just read an article about somefishermen from Chatsworth who went to the Transkei fishing. Whilst fishing between some ledges they were caught when some five metre swells blocked their way back.

It was quite a battle to get back and one the guys injured himself and rescue personnel were called in to remove him to hospital.

So guys ..please treat the sea with care and always be on the look out of what could happen...crossing river banks etc without knowning the tides and the local conditioons can be dangerous....if you go to areas without cell phone reception ..let someone know that if you not back at a certain time that they need to contack search and rescue.

I sure these guys are going to have a tough time getting their families to agree to let them go fishing again.

Hi All

I fish quite often in the Transki and must say that selecting the tides to fish is very important esp when fishing from rocky ledges. The sea down there is also very unpredictable - many freak waves.

That was during the last South Coast League comp down in TKei a couple of weekends ago. Not only did an angler suffer an injury, but they lost one of their Gillies (who they take down with them), when he was washed out and lost in the early hours of the morning. Torches weren't enough and there was nothing they could do. Rescue choppers searched the area as soon as it was light but found nothing. The gillie was very experienced. I'm amazed this was not mentioned in the article you read.........unless it is a different event!

From all the stories that have been floating around im not sure which is what.I heard they were club members from Flying Fish Angling.

What i would like to know is what really happened because there are so many stories going around especially from rival clubs etc.I feel that this may cause majour problems because things could get twisted and bits added on etc.

Maybe we should get to the bottom of what really happened...

Hey guys,

Jace and Mick Jack are refering to two different incidents. The incident that Mick jack is referring to happend about 04h00 in the morning during the comp. The gillie went down the rocks to gaff a shark and washed off the rocks, the anglers heard the gillies screams but could not see him.

Apparantly the gillie lived with one of the anglers and was more like an adoptive son.

The Incident that Jace mentioned happened at bird rock at the Silaka Nature Reserve about 3 km from Port St Johns. Bird rock I think is only accessible at low tide, and one of the anglers fell and broke his leg and his mates chose to stay with him rather than get of the rock.

The incident that mickjack is alluding to was told to me by an acquaintance of the anglers involved. I am not sure how accurate the details are.

Hey guys. I've been on top of that rock and basically if you fall in, then that's it. It's high and very treacherous. Not really much space to move about and one slip and you're gone.

I know they were club fisherman, but I am not sure which club. I will try to confirm if they indeed Flying Fish Members .

hi guys,

this altogether is a different incident concerning flying fish losing a member, to the one of Warnerdoone. (2 incidents in the same weekend)

nb: fish was gaffed & landed, having ones back turned to the sea can/will cause some disaster, in this case it did. Theres no good feeling losing a fellow angler. So guys always have a look out to whats going on around u & know your limits.

You seem to know what happened bru.Why not share the details with us as this could be a lesson for others.I mean from my experiences in the TRanskie it's not a place you take for granted.

I mean these were experienced anglers with experienced Gillies so to say,so if they knew the conditions and wether predictions as well as tide predictions then why even venture out fishing in sustandard conditions and also at night.

I think that somewhere in this whole mess there is a lesson for us.No matter how much experience one has you always heed warnigs and never take the sea for granted.

I agree Fishing off the ledges in the dark is crazy. I am suprised that more gillies have not been lost.

Well i am not really sure who cae up with the name GILLIE but what they are is helpers so to say.On the Transkei coast the terain is very harsh bru high cliffs legdes steep drop offs etc.

So what has happened over the years is the local guy's who dont have work and need money have started a servoice to the anglers helping them carry their stuff catch theor live bait give them directions to spots etc etc hence they are now called gillies.

Hi guys

I dont far this is true but i heard that the term orginated from the fact the anglers , when having the fish cleaned by the locals used to give the part of the fish from the gills upward..hense the term gillies...true/false...i dont know but sounds logical.

I am just more amazed every day by the AMOUNT of knowledge/information thats on the sealine  forum...i am sure if some can take some time and capture all the data and write a book will sell like snoek on a vis bakkie LOL   nee wat daar is geen better see hengel web blad nie...

Hi Riymos,

Best if the details come off members from those a/cs.Would'nt want  to put myself or Sealine at risk concerning those  A/Cs in-house matter/problems. All that I could state concerning this topic was in my previous 2 posts.
