Hi there, how you fish and what you plan on catching is the issue with drop shot fishing, in 6 outings my species count is greater than the outings and we have had only two blobs. {for those who are interested, Big Eye Kingie, Sand Grunard, Salad Fish and Blacktail - Durban Bay. Flute fish - North Pier. Flagtail and Blacktail - Ansteys Beach. Blacktail, Kite Fish and Lizzard Fish - just south of Umdhloti}. By the way that is the species count not total bag.
If you are planning to catch the big one good luck, but it pays to hone your skills on the little guys and its good clean fun. Personally I find the cheaper products are just as effective when the fish are eating well and it pays to expiriment with the different plastics. When you cover water with a variety of baits results kick in.

Hi there Diawa Megaforce 4-8kg 7ft, find it has a nice light tip but with rigidity through the rod for casting the light lures(R185 Kingfisher), Silstar 2500 6 bearings R150 (Double Deadly), 10lb Fireline with 12 lb fluorocarbon leader. Enjoy the Berkley Gulp and Powerbait products but find they are expensive if the small fish are eating them off. Find the camo worm is cost effective because you use only short pieces of the worm and every thing eats it. The Ratfink flukes are good value and with a little flavoring from Gulp bags are effective. Hook sizes and weights vary dependant on plastic bait size and shape. Most of the investment is in the plastics and it helps to have a varied range, chartreuse grubs clear flukes solid flukes etc. Fish are not big but we have been bust up by a garrick that stripped 150m of 6lb. Most of the tackle can be used for bass fishing so think of it as a bonus investment.

Great site,but is dropshotting only for you guys in Durban & Transkei.How about some tips for us guys in Cape Town, especially the area between Melkbosstrand and Langebaan.
Any advice about lures and retrieval methods will be greatly appreciated.Targeted species will be galjoen , karanteen , hottentot and white stumpnose.

Hi Guys just a friendly tip that could assist any angler when purchasing tackle for drop shotting. Do not buy a reel that has many Bearings unless it is a coffee grinder that is completely stainless steel, example the saltiga range, but they are very expensive in the thousands and possibly the new Qauntum Cabo 60. Think about it logically the more corrosive parts the more maintenance. Salt is a Reel Killer. Lol!

I have to aggree with raggie pup
the Shimano Slade 2500 is a verry nice reel but for the price of the Shimano you can buy two Silstar Hypa 30 reels. I have both reels and they are both working very well.
The Shimano on the Shimano I have 20lb braid and on the Silstar I have 10lb braid. Very important about the braid is that you must at least every 5th time when retrieving your lure wind the braid thight onto your reel, failure to do this will result in some very fine knots coning into your braid when you cast. Ask me I've had it before. At the price this braid comes you need to look after it. As for rods I have the Shimano Schimitar, not very happy with it also got a seven foot Sensation Passion Stick, very nice for the silstar.
As for the lures I started of with Ratfink, Rat Shad and it works I have caught countless Bar Tail Flatheads. I began to think that this is the only fish that I will catch on this drop shot fishing. But after trying some different retrievals I soon got the following, Russel Snapper, Saladfish, Big Eye Kingie, Kob, Shad and so on. I think that Ratfink is a affordable fluke that works. I fish in Richards Bay harbour and where there is a piece of water I try.
Drop Shotting is not about catching huge fish but about the species. You must keep a record of the species you catch. I know a guy from Zululand that just past the 50 species mark. Now that is an achievement. It also for the fun of it teasing that fish into taking your lure, thats what it is about.

Keep it simple, do not be caught in the glitter and razzmataz of top of the range, initially it starts off with smaller fish but as technique and experience grows so do the size of targeted fish. The beauty of dropshot is you fish grounds that you would not be able to with bait as structure and turbelence of water would not let you keep a bait in the water without snagging. As dropshot sinker is only 1/8 oz with the help of the plastic lure it floats. For some of the species suggested would recommend Berkley camo worm which you would cut into 3 to 4 cm lengths and slowly retrieve on the bottom be prepared for the take close to feet just before removing from water. Keep it light and enjoy by the way the ratfink flukes are best value for money 10 per pack for between 10 and 12 randers (get the gold one and watermelon colours but they all work well). Also maybe get the Berkley DVD its helpful and inexpensive if not free from your local store.

I fished using drop shots at Park rynie this weekend and in 20 Minutes i caught a total of 12 fish!...........species count was 8...........3 Spot Pompano, Shad, Blacktail, Sandfish. 3 Different Tropical Species and another type of fish that looks like a big guppy!.......i have no idea of what they are called! lol..........

If it had stripes on the tail with gill plates that should be registered as deadly weapons then its known as a flagtail, very difficult to catch with bait but they love the chatreuse and green plastics. Very good live bait for Kingfish when you can get them.

Went to the beach at Scottburgh caravanpark this afternoon and saw some boys catching small Blacktail off the rocks. Got the dropshot rod and tackle and used the tail section of the Berkley lures. I got four small Blacktails before the tide ran out (released them). It was great catching something in this awefull weather!

Wednesday was the first time I used drop shots. I didn’t have any money for the Berkley range so I bought cheaper bass lures. I fished in Richards bay harbor, used a white worm type drop shot to try and imitate cracker prawn. In about an hour I caught 6 sand fish (flathead), I was pretty exiting./images/emoticons/f10.gif

I tried drop shotting in Mozambique and didn't even get a bite. must admit that I only tried for about half an hour.
