Donald,

It depends on what lure you are using and where you are fishing it......

This is what i have found to work best:

Jig Head: no6, 1/8 ounce

Lures: Berkley Sand worms, Pearl white shad, Watermelon 3 inch Shad with power scales(Best all round lure for any fish in any weather)

The Berklry Gulp Sand worms:- With a piece of the worm(about 4cm).....cast it out  and let it settle and let it just sit there for a couple of seconds and then retrieve it very very slowly......usually the fish will take very near to you.

The minnows - in a bay or near rocks:- cast it out and let it settle for a few seconds so that it goes to a little deeper water, then retrieve slowly, just fast enough to keep it off the rocks, a tip is to just give the lure a slight jerk now and again to get the attention of any fish lurking in between the rocks.

The monniws - on the surf:- stand a little in the breakers and cast your drop shot at an almost 45 degree angle from you just behind a wave as it breaks and reel with a little speed so that the lure is at a medium depth in the wave.....you will eventually be reeling the lure parallel to the breaking wave. This way you will get a knock from a 3 spot pompano on almost every cast, if they are there!

The above methods are some of the retrieves that i use and it has worked very well for me............

Moat of the time you will actually see the fish follow the lure and strike it just before you lift it out of the water.

Tite lines.

Hi all

I am a bass fisherman interested in saltwater drop shot fishing.  I own a 6'6" medium action Loomis bass rod and Daiwa Procaster Baitcaster.  Will this gear be OK for the job?  Everyone seems to say that a coffee grinder is the best - will my baitcaster do the trick?  I have about 120 yards of 12lb line on it (Berkley Trilene).

Thanks

hey spinner,

a baitcaster will be a bit tough to cast out the lures as they are very light, thats why a coffee grinder is recommended.

Thanks for the advice Ashley.

Next question is, do you use a leader, and if you are how do you connect the leader to fireline. I tried a figure of eight knot and it kept on breaking.

Donald,

I usually dont use a leader, i just use 8lb maxima line(brown) - the fish dont see this in the water and the line is more abraision resistant than other lines, but however, if you are going to use a leader then i suggest you use the knot illustrated in the pic, i dont know whats it called but i tried to draw it as best as i could.

but match your leader well with the thickness of line you are using, eg: 0.24mm main line, i usually use a 0.4mm leader.

Just my 2cents worth

I disagree. Its super effective. Get the Berkley CD on Dropshot fishing and plastics from your nearest dealer - sometimes for free. The presenter is awesomely entertaining and certainly explains every facet of the technique and kit. Personally caught three species in one day and a total of about 8 - and I hardly ever get fishing.

Hey Guys,

I Fished for the last time at north pier yesterday. no luck with the slide bait, but using the Berkley prawn with a 1/8ounce no 6 hook, i picked up a small rockcod in between the rocks, my next throw, i hooked into another HUGE fish that almost stripped me of my 100m 8lb line before the hook pulled loose...........i changed my hook to a 1/0 and got another big fish on but again the hook pulled out of its mouth. on my fourth cast, and yet again another big fish, i eventually got cut off on the rocks..........

another guy who was spooning on the bay side picked up a blacktail of i estimate 0.8kg's!!

tite lines.
