We returned from a wonderful vacation in Chidenguele , Mozambique on sat 27. Before I start my report I would like to mention 2 incidents that struck us after entering SA on our return.
Ther first incident took place in Nelspruit at the KFC when my friend's bakkie rear window was smashed and his wifes's bag was stolen.This all in broad daylight. The second incident was at the Witbank shell 1 stop on the N12 freeway when they broke into my bakkie and stole my wifes handbag containing our digital camera with all our holiday pics on. This while the kids were sleeping in the back of the bakkie and my friend standing on the opposite side of my vehicle. Apparently one guy approached him asking for a lift , distracting him while his accomplice entered my vehicle from the opposite side quickly grabbing the bag and they both disappeared very quickly with my friend none the wiser.
Anyways , the pics I am posting are courtesy of my friend's wife who managed to take a few pics.
Our first day out was more of a "recce" as I did not have the waypoints of the reefs as yet so we basically went out and trolled rapalas and halcos for 2 hours before returning. Only to find out later from Mark , the lodge owner , we were a bit too close inshore. The dropoff is approx 1.2km out where the depth goes from 19 m to 32 m. We were eventually to get this right after he was kind enough to supply me with all the waypoints.
The next 2 days saw the sea being a bit choppy , with the surf conditions being very erratic with large swells outside.So we spent most of the time rock and surf fishing.
Unfortunately I dont have these pics but all I can say is AWESOME!!! My wife and I caught quite a variety of species :
Greenspot kingy's and GT's (500gr - 1.5 kg) on dropshot - 5" pearl blue minnow , loads of wave garrick , 2x catface rockcod 1 of 1kg and 1 of 2.5 kg , 5kg Lemon shark , 5 kg lesser sand shark , and natal stumpies.Mostly caught on sardine and chokka mix. I did manage to slide out a live wave garrick one night , the rod wasn't in the holder for 20 mins when all hell broke loose.Needless to say I came off second best.The main line parted , Dont know if it was a shark or big GT......
All in all , the fishing from the side was brilliant and some of the best we have had in Mozambique.
The sea was flat again on wednesday , but I didnt have crew(my mates were enertaining the wives) , so we spent the day sightseeing and snorkelling at kings pool approx 12 km north of the lodge.
Thursday Jason and myself went out early and headed for the reef in front of the lighthouse. We started trolling deep divers to no avail. I eventually changed to slow trolling 3x pink couta dusters with sards. 1 rod was set deeper with a 4oz sinker on elastic 5 m form the bait. Not long and the deep rod was taken by a slinger( I think).
We then moved to the northern most reef and were following a school of bonnies chasing baitfish when Jason was picked up by a couta of 9 kg. I then got picked up by a yellowfin tuna of 16 kg , both on the pink dusters on the surface.The first 3 fish on my new boat and we returned to base very happy and thirsty for an ice cold 2M.
The last day my wife went out with me and we headed down to the lighthouse. We slow trolled the pink dusters and she managed to get her very first couta of 12 kg and myself one of 7 kg. We lost 2 couta with hooks pulled but all in all a fantastic experience.
