Hi all, this is a report of my weekend fly fishing

nice report walkers... was at millsream last year october and got some good catches, had a fish on, on almost every cast in the weirs.
@ chris, is solitary dam the trophy dam??

@ Cougar - I fish the buzzer on a dropper on my leader as well as a dry fly... I do not use the technique of tying the dropper onto the hook as I have lost 2 big fish due to the hooks straightening and burning off the knot and the hook snapping... When i fish with a buzzer, atomic worm, nymph or worm I normally fish them on a dropper either in front or behind the dry fly, found it to be very successful when the fish are not feeding freely! I will post a pic of the RAB now, it is a dry fly and a very good 1!

@ Chris Shelton - Thanks a lot, Millstream and Dullstroom are wonderful places, you would be surprised at how much Dullstroom has been developed now though! Dont fish Solitary Reaper often, havent actually fished it for a few years, havent landed a fish there but i hooked a decent trout and he got off... My old man fished Solitary all the time and he pulled some monsters out of there! They are really 'well trained' fish like you said can be very difficult to catch, my old man used to get the bigger fish there on small nymphs

Thanks Williaby!! Whats a good fly buzzer combo ?? Ie. A DDD and an orange buzzer?? There any colour you find works better than others?? do you just let it drift in the wind??

A DDD or RAB (but any dry works) on top work great and I usually fish a red buzzer although black ones work too.

My most effective combo has been DDD and small red buzzer.

I usually fish this stationary when there a little ripple on the water.

Walkerkiller... i kinda think i understand what you saying!!  So you fish it as if you were fishing for yellows... with your point fly being dry fly , then say 10 cm up the line you use a buzzer on a dropper! ?? That correct or am i being a dumbass here??

Yip, and the most difficult of the lot, so that's where I spent most of my time. 

Heres an old photo of me taken just above Lake Millstream. Check the cool Ray Bans out...lol. I don't think there was even such a thing as purpose made fishing sunglasses those years

Thanks Walkerskiller, def going to give it a bash! Just how far from the dry fly do you put your dropper bra? And how longds the dropper?? Walkerskiller you obv know your fly fishing.. when does the spawning season start, caus i know orange flies work around that time?? Or does anyone else on this post happen to know?? Im still learning here guys!

I vary it hey but the dropper is normally between 10 and 40 cm away from the dry fly... The lengthe of the dropper depends completely on what fly you are fishing on the dropper... A buzzer or nymph for example should be fished as close to the surface as possible because they are imitating hatching insects that are moving up to the surface so i usually fish those at between 5 and 15cm from the surface or the leader... When fishing with things like Atomic Worm, San Juan Worm, sinking ants, fish egg patterns those i normally fish about 25-30cm under the surface...

To be honest with you I dont know when the rainbows in this country spawn i think its between may and august... During winter though ive had a lot of success with orange flies, sumer not so much!

Your dropper length can vary depending on how deep the fish are feeding. Its a bit of trial and error.

Here is a great knot for tying the dropper fly on if you choose that method:

1. Start by making a small loop in one end of the tippet material, and put two fingers inside the loop.

2. Next, twist the loop six times.

3. With the tag end, go through the loop and then back through the second loop created by the tag end and the standing line.

4. Snug up the knot, and you've got a clinch knot with a loop that will slip. Put the loop around the hook bend, and tighten it up. Voila!

An absolutely deadly combination that works well during the middle of the day when fish tend to move to the depths is to use a gold head black woolly bugger (or something similarly weighted) as your first fly and then an orange booby as your point fly.

Let it sink nice and deep so that the WB is just above the ground and the booby will float just a bit above and behind. Give that a short sharp double pull every 5 secs or so.
