Hi all, this is a report of my weekend fly fishing in the Dullstroom area on a farm called Millstream! Went on a family getaway this past weekend with plenty of excitement and promise of good fishing! It had been a few months since i last caught anything on fly so I was really excited to get a few fish! The farm is stocked with Rainbow and Brown Trout and is made up of 8 dams and a weir system comprising of 15 or 16 smaller dams, there is plenty of water and the farm is not overstocked with fish so it is all about presentation, which I like!

Go there on friday afternoon and immediately wet a line... I was walking around with 2 outfits - a floating line 5 weight with 3lb leader and a sinking line outfit with 6lb leader. I fished with the floating line on Friday and manged to land 3 fish, very happy with myself- I got 2 Rainbows on a size 16 DDD between 150-250 grams and then a 420gram (40.5 cm) Rainbow on an orange buzzer fished about 8 cm below the surface... To my amazement the smallest of the 3 fish put up the biggest fight with spectacular aerial displays.

Got up at 6am on Saturday morning to fish in the weir system... Was tough fishing and did not catch in the morning, although i missed two fish on a Yellow Humpey dry fly. Went out after breakfast and first cast I was vas on the sinking line with a 350 gram Rainbow caught on a size 16 Zulu... Was good fun as I hadnt got a fish on the sinking line for a while... The rest of the day produced a blank for me with one or two hook ups but no landed fish!

Sunday morning was my last chance to get any fish so I was up again at 6am, braving the cold and I went out... 3 hours passed and nothing would touch any of the flies or techniques I was using, very dissapointed I was about to head back for breakfast when a 1 kg Rainbow grabbed my GRHE fished about a foot under the water on the floating line... It was a great fight and a very strong 46 cm fish! It was my biggest Trout since my PB of 2.4 kgs 18 months before, I was really chuffed with myself and it made the weekend really worth it! Before packing up after breakfast I took the sinking line with a black woolly bugger to the water and landed 2 fish in 30 minutes, 1x 250 g and 1x 600 g... It was a great weekend and I got 7 in total!

7x Rainbow Trout Caught
5x kept
2x released
All Between 150 grams and 1 kilogram
All between 27cm and 46 cm
Caught on the following flies - DDD, Orange Buzzer, Zulu, GRHE, Black Woolly Bugger!

Well done WK. Awesome catches. I see the DDD producers again!

Also had a good session this last sunday, between the wife and I we managed 16 trout all just under a KG on a green wooly bugger with grizzly hackle. Tried 12 different flies and not one take, only the green bugger produced the goods.

Well done again. We must hook up and do a session.

Nice to hear Lunker! Thanks alot... The DDD has 2 be one of the best dry flies! That and the RAB never fails me! That sounds like an awesome session bru! The woolly bugger is a destroyer! We must def make a plan 2 do a session sometime!

Ive never really fished a buzzserr under a dry fly but i see you had some luck with it so want to give it a bash now!! Do you just tie it to the round of the hook of the dry fly??? How do you fish it then?? Lil jerks??

Secondly WHAT THE HELL is this RAB i have heared sooo much about??? You got a pic of one mate? Is it a dry fly??

Sweet catches man. I'm heading there for a weekend early june, should be quite interesting.

The pellets they feed the are a close match to the DDD.

Here are some of the catches I've had at Millstream:

1 - Thistle pond  5 trout (500g - 1kg) in an hour using DDD.

2 - Whirligig 7 trout (800g - 1kg) in 45min using olive woolly bugger on a intermediate.

3 - Wordsworth 2 trout (1.2k)g using a white woolly bugger.

4 - Tinter 1 trout (1.2kg) using a Mrs simspon.

So many others in the weirs - to many to mention.

@ Lunker - Olive woolly bugger always seems to be deadly this time of year, good catches mate.

Cougar, thats how I fish a buzzer. Just tie it straight onto the bend of the top fly with about 30cm of tippet.

Works very well with a nice ripple on the water as the buzzer just bounces up and down under the water and the trout find this irresistable.

Millstream is a really nice spot albeit it a little pricey. A mate of mine landed a 3kg brown in Chrystabel so there are some decent fish there too.

Nice report Walker. Been more than a decade since I last visited Millstream but I have many fond memories of the place, not the least of which was the then pretty little town of Dullstroom, and the only tackle shop in town was the famous Blue shoppie owned by Joe Vaid. I rememeber too well the hospitality the he and his lovely wife Gadija and son Mahamoed(sp) extented to my mate and I, insisting that we join them for a hearty round of their homemade curry. lol...priceless people! Then again, we did relieve them of a few Sages, so guess we earned our lunch! lol

Did you fish Solitary Reaper at all? Man, there were some monsters in that pond, but some of the most educated fish I've ever encountered!

Anyway, was nice seeing mention of the place again. Thanks again. Like I said, many fond memories!!!
