Definitely a vlei kurper. Caught a few that colour. Everyone is right about the kurper being cross. They go a black colour when caught but more when they are either spawning or sitting on a nest.

Dont have a picture but caught a vlei kurper while pulling a curly tail over the nest and when i pulled it out the water it was very dark, almost black and had grey stripes down the body.

Ok cool. I'm gonna peg it at Vlei Kurper then :SSS

Thank you for the input everyone. If anyone has pictures of a similar coloured vlei caught, I would love to see it.. That colour just astounds me...

Vlei Kurper and one will see many in that colour scheme at Rust de Winter and even more so at Laurentia lakes especially when breeding

Blue Kurper has a proportionately larger mouth and a more sloped forhead

If you look at the lower lip of a vlei, it has a distictive blue colour. Only vlei's have that colour lower lip.

Re the size of that vlei. It depends how well nature treated it to get bigger than 'normal'. The smaller species fishes does not grow as old as the larger species.

Vlei's are already agressive, when spawning they are extremely agressive and even attack barbel intruding many times it's size - and the barbel yield, or else they won't survive.

A blue kurper also have the red tips on the back fin.

A good catch, check for that blue lower lip.

Pipeman smokes the right stuff. You can see the second back fin which is the givaway and the dwarf tiges has teeth just like other tigesr fish. Ok just smaller.

Someone else and myself were fishing rust de winter many years ago. Now we know there are crocks and we mere set to win the competition. in the big bay (it was very different then, there were trees in the water) we heard the barble breaking surface in the thick mist. We floated the boat so we can see the shore to make sure uncle crokkie wasn't there.... then into the water. We waded everywhere back then, see.

I was in the water waiting for my victim to give away his position again when one of those dwarf tigers bit me on the toe. I went cold from head to... well toe. Probably why I don't have a tail today, lost mine that day ;-)
